My english teacher used to play this song on an old tape player. He used all of his soul and emotion while singing and dancing it in class. He even used to draw circles on the blackboard to make us understand the deep meaning of the lyrics.I heard this song randomly on radio yesterday and this memory (which i didn't even know I had) came to my mind so spontaneously "like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind". I even remember his sad face as if he felt some kind of nostalgy while listening to this song. I can't explain why I commented this story. Sad memory but I'm glad I recalled it...

Out of all the versions I've heard of this song Alison Moyet does the most moving rendition. She sings it nice and slow with the emotion of an artist who understands the emotional depth of the song. With the orchestra backing her she uses it as a back drop unveiling a rich tone of a chapter that reflects the movie it came from.

@@Rocket_E As I said, I admire her singing voice greatly. I've heard her in a few interviews and, she swears a lot. As for the song, well, for me at least, Noel Harrison nailed it on the first take. The melody is haunting, but the singing is almost dialogue, and he doesn't try to squeeze every ounce of mystery from it. That's for us, and the lyrics give us plenty of scope. Moyet is trying to explain the mystery with changing intonation. She is telling us where to go. Personally, I don't like that. Just a personal view.

I already love Alison's ART, have followed Ms Moyer here and there, for the last 40 years, yet the first time I hear this one. Oh, My...oh Lord, I love the darkness of the picture, or shall I say the brightness less of black and white...which makes it even more sombre than what we feel. Steve McQueen, does it with his fingers, face and hands, I love the Cuban cigar any time, but... ALISON MOYER still is the wonderful Goddess of the Windmills of my Soul. AMEN (Zenkiu!)

The Windmills Of Your Mind [Michel Legrand, Marilyn and Alan Bergman] Alison Moyet Round like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending on beginning On an ever-spinning reel Like a snowball down a mountain Or a carnival balloon Like a carousel that's turning Running rings around the moon Like a clock whose hands are sweeping Past the minutes on its face And the world is like an apple Whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind Like a tunnel that you follow To a tunnel of its own Down a hollow to a cavern Where the sun has never shone Like a door that keeps revolving In a half-forgotten dream Or the ripples from a pebble Someone tosses in a stream Like a clock whose hands are sweeping Past the minutes on its face And the world is like an apple Whirling silently in space Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind Keys that jingle in your pocket Words that jangle in your head Why did summer go so quickly? Was it something that I said? Lovers walk along a shore And leave their footprints in the sand Was the sound of distant drumming Just the fingers of your hand? Pictures hanging in a hallway Or the fragment of a song Half-remembered names and faces But to whom do they belong? When you knew that it was over Were you suddenly aware That the autumn leaves were turning To the color of her hair? Like a circle in a spiral Like a wheel within a wheel Never ending or beginning On an ever-spinning reel As the images unwind Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind
