Wing Chun Techniques of short distance power are learnt at the early stages of Wing Chun training. Although the One Inch punch was made famous by Bruce Lee it is in fact an important part of this martial art. So much so that without this ability much of what we practice in Wing Chun would be ineffective.
The concept of short distance power and how to generate this amazing ability is explained by Mark Phillips Sifu from the London Wing Chun Academy. This Wing Chun technique relies on the ability to contract your body will accelerating your fist forwards. It is a Wing Chun technique to develop short distance power and is very effective for self defence. In fact if you combine with other Wing Chun techniques it can be very powerful when caught unprepared.
If you are interested in martial arts, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do then you may find this video of interest. it simply seeks to explain this technique in a practical way that may people can understand.

I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. You have moved beyond teaching and into the realm of educating. You are a credit to the art and science of Wing Chun.

I dont think the guy hit by that "1 inch punch" would have moved if he was in a stance ready to take a hit. He had his feets at his shoulders level. If he had 1 leg in front and 1 back, he wouldnt have almost fell

Great explanation as usual. Does it take months or years to learn to contract and then relax the muscles so it doesn’t hinder the next strike or moving out the way because the body is still not completely relaxed? Also does this mean that WC is a speed based art if striking in numerous combinations and won’t this hinder senior/ older practitioners as we loose speed as we age. Does WC have any fight finishing strikes?

Do you think there is a limit to how many men one man can fight at a time? Just I use to do Thai Boxing, and, in a street fights, I have never been able to beat more than 3 at a time. Any more than that and I got my ass kicked.

It's true that you can get decent power behind short hits, but in this video, hand was pulled away from the target (watch it closely and you'll see it also) to get power behind it. Not so as to just make fist where your hand is and hit from there, like it should be. Tho granted, I don't know what the "real" 1inch punch is, so are you allowed to withdraw your hand backwards like in this video, or should you start your punch from where your hand is once you make fist... so this could be the real one for all I know :P But the punch in this video did not start from the distance his fingers were from the target (if I make any sense... I'm not englishspeaking), but from further away once his hand got pulled back before hitting. After all, 1 inch is about 2,5centimeters, so the fist should be much closer anyway. Because with average man, if he has his fingertips on the target and makes a fist, then his fist is roughly 10centimeters away from the target just by making a fist... that's 4 inches right there, not to mention atleast double that in this video with that hand going backwards. So still searching for proper 1 inch punch that would have enough power to be anything but a push.

There's no such thing as a 1 inch punch. It's just a phrase I believe invented by Bruce Lee. The idea is short distance power, which relates to the ability to hit without fully withdrawing the arm from the fist. What you saw was my hip pulling the hand back, in which case this is not a hand withdrawal, but a generation of power from short distance. Anyway, hope this helps you understand the concept better. We do have other videos on the subject on our channel. Have a great day.

The whole consept of wing chun does make sense, even when I can't say I understand it all (I'm not an expert in WC, just trying to figure new things in it). Short range punches aren't easy to learn properly, because there are much more to them, than just your arm strenght, like you explained (your hip pulling for example). So yes, things like this will help me understand the concept better and also strenghtens the fact that WC does have very good foundation to fighting situations. Ofcourse not everything makes sense or even work, but channels like yours are good source of info, with explanations and technique breakdowns. That's why I keep watching and subbing as well as by natural curiosity, slightly questioning what I see :P Because when I wanna learn, I want to know what's going on. I might sound annoying nitpicker, and granted that I can be that, but also when english isn't the language I speak (tho we do learn it in finland, but I can't say I'm the best at it) my questions or comments might have slightly different tone than how I would "tone" it in finnish (as my own language). So no disrespect inserted, just me being "what's going on?" :P

Janne Grönmark the best one inch punch I've seen, well I've seen two. One is a Chinese sifu named Wang Zhi Peng, from beijing, he's a monster. The other is some dude in a subway, they don't give his name in the video but type in one inch punch subway and I'm sure it pops up

Thanks for the tip. Was just watching videos where Wang Zhi Peng was, and they seemed to be nicely explained. Also 1 video where there was actual and literal science behind his fighting, with all those sensors on the body that made animations of how his frame worked during punching :P That was pretty nice touch.
