They were so effective because of many aspects. - 6m long spears drilled inside - hussars weren't just common folks, they were nobles. Disciplined, brave, smart, well trained. - they had specific, verry effective charging tactic. Charge started 400m from enemy, there were 80 men in every banner standing in four rows with 2-3m of free space between them. About 100m before enemy lines they formed 2 rows, knee next to knee, no free space between them. And 60m from enemy they Got to max speed. - frame above them had few resons. It protected from being taken down by sth like lasso (Tatars used them), feathers generated big noise which disturbed enemy troops and horses, and made them visually much higher, so stressed shooters aimed higher then supposed to. - horses. With exclusive phisical conditions and training. 1 hussar horse was worth more than two villages! And there was a death penalty for trying to export hussar horse abroad of Commonwelth. And now imagine. You are poor infantry trooper and see solid, 4m high, deadly wall comming towards you with enormous speed. I guess u don't think about fithing, you are fear paralised or trying to flee. That's why hussars had very little personal loses at their charges (max 5% of men). Formation stopped being so unvunerable when firearms developed well and had better effective accuracy and range. *sorry for my english

One mistake: On 90% Hussars not use this Wings in the battle. Its a myth. No more then 1/10 used this wings, and its was only one wing, and not in this shape. Wings appears in 18th centry, when Hussars are only a ceremony army. The Hussars were famous for their huge "wings", a wooden frame carrying eagle, ostrich, swan or goose feathers. In the 16th century, characteristic painted wings or winged claws began to appear on cavalry shields. Great movie!!!

They would slaughter you while taking some loses but nothing major.. My experience comes with the SAW249, which holds 200 rounds of ammo.. They would be charging at you in a loose formation and you would wast many rounds just getting your aim in. Meanwhile they are coming at you at about 30 to 40Mph.. Oh and this is all with hopes that you have your back to something solid and they are not flanking you. Either way you will run out of ammo and have to reload. This is when they will come at you with full charge and quickly finish you off. Even if you are able to reload at the superman speeds, you still have one more huge problem, HEAT. You will need to change the machine gun barrel at some point because it will melt off.

Hussars were part of the Army that was defeated in the Battle of Cecora (1620), not of their own fault as it was the infantry that broke formation and that was the reason the battle was lost. But still it was a defeat that hussars took part in. The Battle of Dobrynichi (1609) was another defeat in the Dymitriads, although they did not fight as part of a polish army (they were mercenaries of false Dymitry) and the defeat was caused by loss of morale of other False Dymitry units who escaped after the first attempt of hussars to brake the Tsars army failed.

I saw like 20 videos on youtube about the winged hussars, and 0 about the Hussars in general, and their fascinating history. For example no video about the Hungarian hussars, which from an unit whoch became battle hardened in the wars against the Ottoman advance in the border castles of Hungary, in the 18th century, with the refuge of the Hungarian cavalry units in France, Prussia, the Russian empire, England and finally in the USA, became the most renowned cavalry unit of the 18th-19th century in Europe. The European hussar units, which in the 18th century were exclussively from Hungarian young men (because they said that only the Hungarians can fight in this way), who took refuge in the different countries of Europe, after the defeat of the Rákóczi freedom war against the Habsburgs, or after that war ended, many of Hungarian officers and hussars were hired from Hungary to go in Prussia, Sweden , Russia, to found the light Hussar units there, followed until the 20. century the old strategies of the nomadic armies. It is also fascinating that the fashion of the corkscrew moustache in Europe and France was spread by the Hungarian tradition of the French Hussars, very beloved in the Napoleonic era. There's some notable errors in your description: The Winged hussars were units both utilized by both the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Poland. Calling them "Polish" is grossly inaccurate considering a large portion of these noble fighters and horses were raised from Lithuania. This was especially the case during eastern wars against cossack rebels, Russians, Ottoman, and the Swedish as Lithuania was closer and had to administer the southern border of the Commonwealth

Urmmm...well...no. Husars ("Huzarz" in polish means heavy cavalry. ) and the origin is from Serbia. And that type of cavalry brought to Hungary and Poland by Serbian military men in exile. It came from a Serbian word "Gusari" meaning "Pirates".

@@paulsunday7688 In my opinion(I'm Polish btw) winged hussars are overrated. Most people in Poland have no idea about them or they learn about hussars from TV instead of books. I'll try to explain. Hussars were recruited only from Polish nobility. Their equipment, weapons, armors and most of all horses were very expensive(as we know from books one horse could be worth of a village). And hussars needed at least a pair of horses or more(but usually 2-3 horses). What's more, they were called upon to bear arms by kings only in specific situations - for a single battle or campaign or if there was a huge need to defend a country. After campaign they could dismiss and go back to their homes. This is why their quantity was not very high, usually between 5-15% of whole Polish army in XVII century during campaign. They were not a "constant" formation in our army. Moreover, they were usually used under a specific conditions - terrain shape and weather conditions had to be good. Soil should have been quite smooth and dry. Battlefield should be "prepared" for them - they were still a heavy cavalry which couldn't get a good job in muddy conditions and during heavy rain. if you're interested in heavy cavalry of mentioned period you should know that main core of Polish cavalry of Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth were, so called "Pancerni" (Eng. translation "Armored"). Check out "Towarzysz pancerny" on wiki, there's also an article in English. They were a kind of slightly less armored cavalry (less than hussars), you can say- medium armored cavalry and they were mostly recruited from impoverished nobility and sometimes townsfolks, but in comparison to winged hussars they were much more versatile than hussars. Usually they used spears, pistols, short barrel cavalry carbines, sabres and horseman's picks, but if there was a need they could also use a long hussars lance. it was a common formation in Polish army used for every day manoeuvers and to defend country's borders against Tatars, ukrainian rebollious cossacks or Ottoman Empire. In conclusion, people overrate winged hussars usually, because of their famous battles and famous hussars cavalry charges when they crushed an enemy even being outnumbered and because of their fancy wings. The fact is that not more than 20% used wings during battles. They used wings mostly for ceremonies, funerals etc. People do not take under consideration that lots of other formations did a big of efforts to let hussars proceed with cavalry charge. This is why Winged Hussars are a kind of Polish "national pride".

Which isn’t really true. The Winged Hussars made up only 3.000 out of roughly 74.000 soldiers (24.000 were Polish soldiers, 21.000 Imperial Austrian and 29.000 German) of the relief army. The battle started early in the morning at around 04:00 am when the Ottomans attacked the Austrian and German (Bavarians, Saxons etc.) troops, the Polish troops on the right wing arrived much later and it was the Polish infantry that first joined the fight in the early afternoon. The Winged Hussars basically only joined the fighting in the late afternoon (about 12 hours after the battle started) at a time when the Ottoman right wing was already defeated and the Ottoman center under infantry attack from three directions. The cavalry charge was then ordered at around 18:00 in the evening to finish off the already losing Ottomans. Saying the Winged Hussars saved Vienna is really way too simplistic and doesn’t really do justice to what happened in 1683.
