The 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament is an 8-player double round-robin that will decide Magnus Carlsen's challenger for the 2023 World Championship match, or, if Magnus decides not to play the match, the two players who will battle it out for the title. There is also a €48,000 top prize at stake. The venue is the Palacio de Santoña, Madrid, from June 17th to July 4th. If players tie for 1st place there will be a playoff on July 5th. No draw offers are allowed before Black's 40th move.
The players get 2 hours for 40 moves, then 1 hour for the next 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment only from move 61. A playoff will feature two 15+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 3+2 blitz games. If still tied the players will keep playing single blitz games until one of them wins. If more than two players tie for 1st there will be a mini round-robin. Official website: worldchampionshipcycle.fide.com

I have been watching Naka since he was in the top 30 and getting a lot of hate. People saying he was over-rated, would never be a contender, etc. The top chess players had respect for Naka long before the (non-US) public did, and then as you said he rose to #2, made the candidates, it was clear. His streaming and blitz playing may have created doubters, this puts that all to bed.

I also feel like he matured a lot as a person. Before streaming and even when he started out as a streamer, he was really arrogant. @lopezmt5
@lopezmt5 Жыл бұрын
@@julianleft4662 - Nepo is definitely playing in the WCC. My point is not who Magnus would like to play. He said he would only play if Alireza Firouzja wins. He can only play Nepo, no one else for the WCC. What I was saying, is that since Nepo won and Magnus already beat him the last WCC. He might be even less interested in defending his title. If Magnus really did decide not to defend his title then and only then, would the #2 player of the Candidates Tournament get a chance to play in the WCC. And at this moment that would be Hikaru. Which means the WCC would be Nepo vs Hikaru. It is irrelevant if Magnus thought it would bring more attention to chess and the WCC or not. It doesn’t matter if Magnus wanted to play Hikaru for the WCC. He can’t because Hikaru didn’t win the Candidates. I was saying that if things remain as they are now and Hikaru remains in 2nd place (his last match is with black against Ding who is a 1/2 out of 2nd place), I am even more convinced that Magnus will play against Nepo, because I have a strong suspicion that z a Magnus doesn’t like Hikaru. I don’t think Magnus wants Hikaru challenging and perhaps winning the WCC without having a chance to prevent that from happening.

Actually, nowhere in the official regulations of the tournament it says that second place will qualify for world championship match. It says so about the first place, and also tiebreaks are not used for the first place for that reason. FIDE is at least lucky that the second place will not require tiebreaks, but legality to equate the second place and the first in their right for the match can still be questioned. I am for one do not find it fair.

Also interesting that Hikaru took on his jacket as soon as he expected Duda to resign but Duda played 4-5 moves more. Hikaru putting on the jacket is a sign that Hikaru knows he has won as he doesn't like to have the jacket on for too long. He was actually sitting and more or less signaling "it is time to resign". The commentators also expected Duda to resign all the time.

12:36 - I was annoyed when Duda went back to d7 with his Knight. I wanted to see what would happen with that passed pawn. Nakamura deserved the win.

suddenly I had this thought that magnus might have said that he won't play against anyone accept firouza to make everyone fight tooth and nail for the 2nd place thus fatiguing his challenger more than usual before the match for the title. if thats the case, its a brilliant one time strategy

Not really, Nepo already secured the win and his last games were easy draws. The actual WC match is few months away, doubt it's going to matter.
@tuddgrimley8532

I think it's mostly that Magnus is very aware that Candidates tournaments become dry and pointless once a clear leader emerges. The players trailing in the tournament have no reason to be there, since they know they're not going to be the WC challenger, and it shows in their games. Quick draws just to get out of the playing hall, or careless blunders because there's not much of a reason to play their best. So even though Magnus was joking about not playing anyone but Alireza, the notion that second place could be important this time keeps things fresh and interesting and the candidates are a little more likely to play their best throughout the tournament.

Are there tiebreaks in case of equality at 2nd rank? (i.e., games, or some math formula)?

Magnus has earned a rematch, but Hikaru vs Nepo would be unpredictable and kind of cool to see. It kind of feels wrong for Magnus to bail given that he's still the strong favorite, but it feels like he has more to lose than to win, when it's kind of just expected, but it's very hard work to do so.

False. He acts on what's best for the chess world and he knows you plebs can't see through his BS. The drama his comments stirred up brought all kinds of attention to chess and this tournament, which was 100% his only goal from the start. The absolute hypest shit to have ever happened to the chess world will happen if he doesn't play. Chess news will explode into every sphere of the media. We get nepo naka or nepo ding and two years from now we get the return of the king when carlsen plays in the candidates. It's a WWE story line and it's F'ing sick, even better that no one sees what he's doing or what he's at least thinking about sacrificing for the betterment of chess, forever.

Nothing to say today, I was huge fan of Hikaru since day 1 i started watching chess but everyone used to troll him like he is no good in classical anymore, I used fight them saying my man Hikaru might be not be great in classical anymore but he is great in Blitz and Rapid. He was my hero but turned out I was under-selling my hero he was actually Super-hero. He played fantastically ❤️❤️❤️💝💝

Actually at the position at 8:41 Bd6 is the only move that doesn't lose on the spot for white. If white moves the queen b4 gets the bishop trapped.
