Hope you’ll do Succession next - it’s a different kind of show in terms of style, but it’s on the same level when it comes to taking the viewers intelligence seriously and telling a great story with a larger cast of characters and fantastic writing and acting. It’s now right behind the Wire for me (and I’ve watched all the big ones like Sopranos, BB, Mad Men, etc.) Let’s get you to 10k! By the way, The Wire is an INSANELY rewatchable show. You’ll pick up a lot more details on a rewatch and it’s really great to see those characters, knowing where they‘re heading.

"You'll didn't need to show this..." Nah they really did. One of the main themes of the show is showing the cyclical nature of how problems pass from one generation to the next. How it doesn't matter how good you are or how much potential you have, you are just as susceptible to being consumed by those problems. Marlo's last scene is actually great because it ties back to two other big names in the series, Omar and Stringer Bell. Marlo literally had everything Stringer Bell wanted (flush with cash and out of the game), but it wasn't what he lived for, he lived for the game, and in that game he wasn't the one who was remembered... Omar was.
@monadreher2428 Жыл бұрын
Yep. Marlo basically lost just as much as he won which is why his ending is perfect because it's a ending *he* doesn't want. While I absolutely wanted him to either die or go to the big house (didn't care which came first atp tbh) it's important to note that Marlo gets to an ending that not too many people in the game get to reach, free and rich. Because he's been forced into retirement and into a role that is nowhere near what always mattered to Marlo. And the main thing that always mattered to Marlo was taken from him as well by my love Omar ❤ so Marlo essentially ends up with everything he needs but not everything he wants and what he wants to be. His own personal hell and it's great af for a character like him. A fate worse than death from his POV.

Chris had a family, Wee-bay had a family - Even Cheese's family was in the show! It's tougher to catch but - Randy is Cheese's son.
@Cbricklyne Жыл бұрын
That don't make them family. Cheese didn't even know that Randy existed or was his son. Just because you're biologically related to someone don't make you family with them. There's a related (excuse the pun) saying we have in the Black community that kind of touches on that that goes,... "Not all skinfolk is Kinfolk" Which technically just means that not all black people are going to be family (or for you) just because they black. Same thing applies to people you're actually biologically related to and more so in the case of deadbeat dads. And let's not forget that this Cheese we're talking about. Dude served up his own Uncle - his flesh and blood - to be murdered just so he'd get paid, even after that uncle had protected his ass many many times - including against the very same people he then sold his uncle out to.

Marlo Stanfield : "MY NAME IS MY NAME!!!!!!" Vondas (The Greek's right hand man) : "My name is not even my name" The Greek : ".....and I'm not even Greek" That sums up the game in one simple contrast and why it was that the Greeks controlled it and the Bangers like the Marlo's, and the Avon's and the Stringer's didn't. Prop Joe came close to being the black version of teh Greeks but even he screwed up at the end, both by trusting family he shouldn't have (Cheese) and also by not dipping earlier when he had the chance right before Marlo got him. Also, Fun fact : Andy Krawcjyck - the guy that Marlo is introduced to by his lawyer Levi at the end there is the same developer who was with Stringer when String got murdered by Omar and Brother Mouzone, He also happens to be the developer (or one of the developers) behind the project that was built where the Towers from Season 1 were and were demolished for. So he's essentially been in the background or foreground of almost all of Baltimore's Drug game kingpins, from Avon with the Towers, to String trying to go legit, all the way back to Marlo trying (and failing) to get out of the game and be a legit businessman. I'm sure he has a connection with the Greeks too, but I still haven't figured it out yet. Or maybe the Greeks are just that good.

@@unc54Yep. And David Simon stated (which is accurate) that Sydnor is the *only* major character in the entirety of the series whose morality remains clean or "unblemished" by the end of the series. Of course this is largely because we don't see or know much about Sydnor's personal life but it's safe to assume that he's a decent guy and happily married. Him going down the same path as McNulty ensures that he won't remain "unblemished" for long. And as you stated we definitely start to see it throughout Season 5.

To be fair, that ending of Marlo doesn't necessarily say he made it out unscathed. I think while they story is that he does leave the Game and is shown trying to be a businessman or whatever, that little bit at the very end where he clashes with those kids and they don't know who he is which sets him off, I feel was put there to show that while he's physically out of the Game, he's not mentally out of it yet and still has a lot of that "streets" mentality that Clay Davis (ironically) warned String about. I feel like they left his ending open-ended, meaning he could look that encounter and the fact that he got a bullet graze wound on his hand as a kind of warning to leave the game for good,....OR,.....it could just be the show saying that it's only a matter of time before he finds himself fully back in that world and either gets got (by someone like Michael, no less), or the cops get a whiff that he's back in the drug game and this time the lock him up for good. I don't think anyone ever makes it out of the game and the streets clean, save for the few like Namond (who wasn't really in it in a real way, to be fair) or I guess you could say Bubbs (though he wasn't a dealer, but certainly on the User/fiend side). Okay, maybe Poot too,..... But we don't know if Footlocker had a bad quarter and mass layoffs and he found himself jobless again.

I get why people may not like season 5 and I admit it is the weakest of all the seasons. However, it's better than people give it credit for. While it may not work on its own, it works after everything that came before it. Sure, the whole McNulty faking crime scenes plot is outlandish and maybe even silly on its own, but it still fits and works after everything they went through the 4 seasons before it. Plus, they wrap everything up nicely, especially the way some characters are taking over the roles of others, showing how the cycle continues. The best part of the where-are-they-nows is seeing Bubbles have a happy ending and the worst is seeing Dookie having a tragic ending.
