In the director's commentary, it's pointed out that Wallace was right. Hamilton was the first United States Secretary of the Treasury, he was never president. But in that world, just like in the police world, the guys at the bottom have to shut up and pretend like their bosses are right. Another example of how The Wire was brilliant.

That's the tragedy of Wallace. Subtle details show that he was basically a kid who could have become "a citizen" under better circumstances -- he paid attention in school, he took care of his siblings, he was basically gentle-natured and not cut out for the game. The odds were just too much against him because of circumstances.

"MONEY BE GREEN!!" D'Angelo was the man
@mikem5919 жыл бұрын
Bodie was never impressed with D'Angelo's management style, but he actually learned A LOT from D'Angelo. D'Angelo's teachings stuck with Bodie. Their relationship was tortured, but strangely D'Angelo's teachings of the 'game' helped Bodie move up the organization, while also hindering him, as Bodie never could see himself as beyond being a 'soldier'. Bodie needed to get more mentorship from Slim Charles who learned how to move from being a soldier, to being actually one of the 'street kings' at the end of the Wire. You would have thought that Bodie would be interested in what Slim Charles had to say about dealing with Marlo, but when Slim offered advice, Bodie rejected it. Even through all the disdain he had for D'Angelo's management style, he still strangely listened to him. Contradictory relationship, which is part of what made "The Wire" - "The Wire"...:)

This was the beginning in a sense. Bodie was still very ignorant and it shows. “That it” shows how immature and green he is. However, later on we see Bodie mature more and even Poot. They really listened to D and started thinking more. That’s the growth we see later on. An example is when the junkie got beat up because he “bad mouthed their product” and Bodie says “ so what he’s telling the truth”. If Bodie never matured he would have agreed with beating.

One of the greatest shows on TV but the script bugged me sometimes (not enough to take away from the show though). I always felt like it would've been more correct for him to say, "Money green!" instead of "Money BE green!" In Black American vernacular we often use zero copula, which omits the "to be" verb in all its forms. In that dialect, the word "be" most often comes before a verb, sometimes an adverb, and it suggests a habitual or frequent action (e.g. "I be sleepin' in on the weekend" [meaning something I usually do, not something I'm doing right now], or "I be around there all the time."). Money is never not green, so it's a give that money IS green. Therefore, by the rules of vernacular and dialect (yes, there are rules, just like "standard" language), "Money green!" For anybody who gives a eff. I dig linguistics.
