Unfortunately I haven’t seen this interview before, and now when I do see it, I think it’s brilliant. Tommy really gets the time to elaborate on his ideas and work, and Johan is sensitive enough not to get in his way. I know there are some old farts out there critiziing Tommy for violating old amps. But I can assure them, we were many guitarists in the 80:ies that searched for the guitar sound of our dreams - without having a fortune to spend on the gear that our guitar idols used. Tommy helped us getting closer to the sound we searched. And still is, with a crowd of world known guitar players turning to him. His knowledge, experience and humility is obvious to see in the interview.

Interesting that he mentions running the guitars through a tape deck and then into the amps. A dual cassette tape deck was technically my first amp back in 78. I discovered that if you dimed the input levels you could get quite a distorted output signal.

I've found the right special V1 preamp tube's Plate Coupling capacitors can make a very good sounding amp sound great. In 1986 I basically gutted and reused the parts to build a Marshall 1969 /1971 head from my incredibly stout 1973 SOUND CITY MkIV 120R (5 preamp tube, 6- Mullard EL34/Partridge Transformers aka Hiwatt transformers). I happened to find some piece of broken antiquated German audio visual equipment at a thrift store packed full of mustard dipped radial capacitors. So I had several .001uf and .022uf caps to experiment with, as well as other brands of caps. Very few had drifted. At any rate, I found the SS120's first stage .001uf sounded so special I kept it for the build. And only _that_ original cap sounded that good.

Very cool! You should continue to do these and then at the end, play thru some of the builder's products. You might need to upgrade your mics for the interviews. I think you're on to something doing this type of thing occasionally on your channel. God bless and rock on 😎🎸👍

Tak Johan and Tak Tommy for the interview. I am dabbing with an 10 band equaliser in front on the the amp, keeping the bass low before the gain stage because my reference is a jtm45. Instead of the presence control I can toogle in a 68nf with a 2k7 in V1 and a 68nf with 4k7 on V2. and an ekstra resistor just before the toogle. But I have to introduce the bass later in the chain. It has given me a starting point. Wonderful inspiration to listening to Tommy. I have heard some of his work on a JCM900 witch I also have in my collection.

When all is said and done we can still agree that power tube breakup has a different character than preamp, correct? Or is he saying it's dependant on the output transformer and how they interact?
@JohanSegeborn3 жыл бұрын
Power amp and preamp contribution to tone is indeed different but I’m not sure if power tube break up (pushing them out of the linear region) is even a desirable thing. That’s certainly something I’d like to learn more about.
@willdenham3 жыл бұрын
@@JohanSegeborn Past the sweet spot, is that what is meant by out of linear region or noon? My rig right now is a 65' Fender, it sounds similar to the Bassman head you scored. Even dimed it sounds good but I still keep it around 7 and push it with an eq and drive pedal for more juice and sustain. Still continue to tweak it, swapping drives, reshaping eq, always looking for what best compliments the band, but that master always stays at 7 or so.

What type of filter are you discussing at 53 minutes?
@tommyfolkesson39753 жыл бұрын
It's called a Zobel filter. It works together with coils and passive resonce circuits.
