@Cedarlick Жыл бұрын
I don't think it was the lack of jump scares, it was Tomison's abrupt defection to the devil. Even more abrupt than Bogart in Treasure of The Sierra Madre, which gets called out by critics.
@Emilyb21-dm3bf7 ай бұрын
Yes.
@perrycarters3113Ай бұрын
@@Cedarlick I didn't see it as that abrupt. If you are continually and unrelentingly accused/persecuted against for a crime you did not commit, over time, a small piece of you may almost begin to wish you HAD done the crime you're accused of, simply because you feel as though you are going to be punished for it anyways. I've seen it play out in several different scenarios with similar dynamics of one party accusing/harassing the other despite there being no real evidence. Partners constantly accused of being unfaithful despite doing nothing of the sort, employees constantly accused/punished for slacking off despite being very hard workers, or people accused of not believing in their religion hard enough becoming more alienated from it as a result. In every case, the accusing party inevitably alienated the accused to the point they started actually doing the things they were accused of. It became a self-fulfilling prophecy; if you treat someone as if they are guilty of something, they are for more likely to BECOME guilty of that thing later on. Tomison was harassed/accused, primarily by her mother, for the entire movie, and by the end, she literally had no other options for survival, with her entire family dead and her doomed to be executed for either their murders or witchcraft. Desperate people will often turn to any means-no matter how heretical, blasphemous, morally debased or culturally taboo-to find solace, comfort or survival if they are pushed hard enough.

The film does have a message. It's about a girl becoming a woman and constantly being told she's a monster because those around her are threatened by that. And then of course she becomes one because they drove her to it.
@askechadd24733 жыл бұрын
i don't know if the message was specifically about her womanhood. I think if it was about her becoming a woman then it would've maybe portrayed Thomasin doing things that were more womanly, maybe she starts to somewhat sexualize herself by wearing slightly more revealing clothing or something along those lines that families at that time would've hated. I think its more to do with just the oppression that comes with faith, and the self-denial and self-loathing that comes with having desires under such a faith. Thomasin being a person who has desires for luxuries and asks for gods grace and mercy for this. Thomasin is constantly tormented by religion throughout the movie, with her siblings calling her a witch, her father condemning her and her mother aswell. But there was no evidence that God actually existed, only evidence of the devil. Thomasins faith in God slowly dwindles and finally after her family had all died (the thing that was oppressing her through their faith), she succumbed to the devil, and lived 'Deliciously', a life she always wanted. But yes, it does seem to have a theme of womanhood, as obviously, all the witches were women, and the finale is her disrobing. But I just don't know if the oppression she was getting was because of her becoming a woman. I think the main message is more of self-acceptance, coming out of an ideology that constantly requires self-denial.

@askechadd24733 жыл бұрын
@@DIEGOSHAY her brother wasn’t oppressing her by any means, that was his own little character arc of self-denial and self loathing. His mother being threatened by her womanly hood is a stretch, I think she just blamed her for the baby disappearing. The bride thing is a good example, which is why there is misogynistic undertones, but they’re just undertones. The father didn’t cage her up with the twins because she’s a woman, he caged her up because he thought she could be a witch, an idea that came from his religiosity. It was clearly heavy oppression via religion, over oppression via misogyny. That’s shown by essentially all the characters being oppressed in their own way by religion. As I said, Calebs own self denial of his incestuous thoughts. I can’t remember the whole movie but I remember the father doing something wrong, I think he stole something, afterwords he struggles with his faith and seems to displace that stress onto the family. I can’t remember details about the mother, all I remember is her being mad a thomasin because she held her responsible for the baby and Caleb. Thomasin herself is mostly oppressed by religion, not by misogyny. She questions her faith and prays for gods grace, she hated herself for wanting the luxurious life in the commonwealth. All the character arcs boil down to the characters relationships with faith and devotion, living ascetically.

I absolutely adore this film. Some fun tidbits about the film: The beginning scene with the baby and the witch has some major meaning in witch folklore. It was said in that time that witches didn't just have the ability to fly, rather, they needed an unguent (ointment or lubrication). An active ingredient needed in this unguent was the entrails of an unbaptized baby. Since the family was banished, Samuel would not have been baptized. Along with flying, the blood of babies was also believed to preserve a witch's young and beautiful looks. This may be why she is originally old and ugly, but young and beautiful when Caleb meets her. Everything you see on screen is obviously time-appropriate, but Eggers took it a step further. When the family's house was initially being built the crew was using modern tools. Eggers thought the lines looked too clean and crisp, so he had the crew build the tools like they would have been built in that time period and THEN build the house using those newly furnished tools!

@@K3vin_L that I'm actually not sure of. He's throwing up apples, so the only meaning I could derive was the symbolism to Adam and Eve eating the "forbidden fruit" in the Garden of Eden. The film focuses so much on food. And taste. Deliciousness.

The reason for that is that historians generally believe that many of the famous witch trials (viz. Salem) along with other sightings of witches during puritan times were due to ergot poisoning (i.e., the crops were tainted by hallucinogenic fungi). Egger's fixation on food is a nod to this theory.

There is a fungus that grew on the crops in that climate, and this fungus, if ingested, caused hallucinations. Some scholars published a paper in the 1970s arguing that an outbreak of this fungal infection preceded the Salem Witch Trials and may have caused the strange happenings that were attributed to witchcraft. In this movie, their crops are blighted by some kind of disease. It could be that fungus. They could be hallucinating. Plus, starvation contributes to hallucinations and unsound thinking.

This is my favorite “modern” horror film without a doubt. I always feel like I have to defend myself when I say I love this film because so many jump on me that it’s “not scary” or that it’s “boring and I can’t tell what the characters are saying” due to the old fashioned dialogue. For me horror is definitely subjective and this film genuinely gets under my skin and disturbs me which is what I consider great horror. When I legit feel unsettled and uneasy

The main reason I loved and love this film is its authentic adherence to genuine, historical early-American, colonial-era horror fiction, which is a fascinating area of literature one of my English professors specialized in-a good amount of it written by women! Its reputation will likely improve with time.

I love the dialogue in this movie. I also thought it was going to end when she followed the goat into the shed. And I would have been totally satisfied with that as an ending too! It would have left me wondering if she was following him in for the first time or for the hundredth time.

I haven't watched the video yet, all I know is that this is one of my favorite horror movies of all time and I am extremely excited to see you watch it after your reviews of The Lighthouse Edit: I do disagree about the movie being face value. Great movie to react to, one of the best movies in the last couple of years and one of my favorite horror movies. Edit; This movie captures the "historical" depiction of witches so well. Its the kind you read about in ancient folklore. Which perhaps is boring to some people who might have preferred more action etc, I loved the atmosphere and pace of the movie.

I also enjoyed this more than The Lighthouse; I have a suspicion that The Lighthouse went over my head while this was more grounded for me. I am always impressed with how much can be done with a limited cast and locations. Speaking of the horror revival of the last decade or so, I'm curious if you lads have seen The Ritual (2017)? It rustled my jimmies like few films do. Regardless, keep this reaction train rollin' cause I certly 'preciate ya.

I really love The VVitch, as a witch myself I nearly gave up when the old Crone did what she did with the baby, I thought here we go another cliché of witches....buuut I stayed with it and I'm so glad I did!! I realized it was taken from reports and writings of the time and what people believed about so called witches of the time. I really liked how even the script was written in language of the time!! It was a fantastic film, and with the hare being the witches familiar, as well as Black Philip also it was an amazing film!! I really need to watch this film again, with Halloween hearing I'm going to watch it again soon!!!

This film is a psychological horror masterpiece. The director studied the time period its set in for a year before making this film. The clothes were hand made on looms, forks were not used because they were unknown in this period to Europeans, and, the cabin made same way as back then, the candle lamp light too, all to the time period, 1630s. Director Robert Eggers has OCD in real life.

This is one of my all-time favorite films, though it took a few watches before the final scene began to grow on me. (I immediately noticed the parallel in the final scene of The Lighthouse; nearly lost my mind in the theatre)! To your point about the symbolism of the light at the end of The VVitch, to me the bonfire represents both heavenly light (a common motif invoking morality and godliness in the Bible) and the flames of hell. The more I’ve thought about it, the more appropriate it seems, considering the duality of Thomasin’s character. Thanks for sharing your reactions! I love finding other folks who appreciate this film for the masterpiece it is.

Robert Eggers’ next film The Northman will actually have three actors from The Witch in it, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson, and Kate Dickie. It’ll also have Willem Dafoe from The Lighthouse as well as Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, and Björk, so a great cast all around.

Brilliant movie. Can read a lot into it. My fave theory is they are all suffering ergot poisoning which is known to have caused hallucinations, paranoia etc and is widely thought to have been at least in part responsible for much of the supernatural panic back then. You do see it on some of the corn in the film.

YESS!! This and The Lighthouse are top notch! Def looking forward to Eggers next project, which focuses on Vikings from what I heard :) Also, I think Shaun's reasons for why this film wasn't more accepted is spot on. Its very very different from the horror films of the early 2010's. The fact that it is a time period piece as well that's committed to the dialogue is another factor. It won't be everyone's cup of tea. I remember when I asked a friend how she found The Witch she admitted she couldn't get through it because she couldn't understand what they were saying. @katrinab94403 жыл бұрын
I think there is a deeper meaning behind the film. It's called, "A New England Folktale," because everything that happens in the film is based on testimonials from witch trials back then. People would claim to see naked women flying in the air around a fire, babies disappearing, livestock dying mysteriously. Nowadays, this can all be explained away, but settlers truly believed the devil was real and was all around them. These are tales which are deeply seeded in American folklore. Eggers was playing on those stories and showing the audience the concept of that kind of extreme paranoia.
@paulhagger38953 жыл бұрын
I think the reason it rates low is that it's too cerebral for most audiences. One critic said that 90% of people who see it won't be able understand it. I think he's probably right. The film is a work of art. So many horror "fans" are really just gore fans imo.

The fact that it was shot in 25 days you says, tells you the strong commitment and craft making that goes into this movie.
