I think it'd be a cool idea for a secret ending of years later with "Viola" all grown up and her dad on her death bed. Ellen tells Viola's father as he is slowly losing consciousness that he shot his own daughter and Viola's body has a shadow of the demon that made her a witch behind her, grinning sadistically as the game started all over again.

You can't just right off the bat treat her like she's misunderstood. As if she's actually a good character at heart. Because she isn't. Ellen knew full and well of her abilities. And she used them to her advantage, which cost Viola's life. Ellen wondered why nobody loved her. But maybe they chose to stay away from her because she loved nobody in the first place.

But Ellen was jealous of the girl's family. Ellen's family didn't love her. But Viola's did. So Ellen took the chance and switched their lives around. Poor Viola had to suffer in a severely crippled body: with the eyes gouged out, legs gone, and throat damaged. Ellen ensured her escape beforehand. She did that to her own body so Viola could take it's place. All because Viola was tricked into thinking Ellen was a "friend in need".

I'm gonna go against the grain and say I hardly feel sorry for Ellen at all. I can understand being sick and in pain and wanting a way out of that, sure, and I can even understand turning to a demon's help in desperation, especially since she's so young. But look at how she talks about the switch. Really look at it. She is absolutely SADISTIC about what she did to Viola. She doesn't even apologize for it. She's doing it entirely for her own purposes and she doesn't care at all what Viola thinks about it. In fact she literally said she wanted Viola to SUFFER. That is pure bitterness and evil and even when we understand why that does not make anything she's doing justifiable. That isn't to say that I hate Ellen of course. She's one of my favorite villains ever. But that's just the thing; even with understandable motives, she's still the villain.

I totally agree with you! From the info we gathered we know Ellen was bedridden and blamed the whole world for it. I doubt her parents mistreated her because of all her elegant clothes and toys she has. When she got the chance she killed her parents and fed their souls to that demon and from that moment on she lured kids in that house where they met a horrible death not mentioning the thousands of cats killed so the demon could posses their bodies. Ellen shows no remorse for all these deaths. The worst part is Ellen mentions her powers will return eventually so I can imagine what fate awaits Viola's dad and her friends.

I highly doubt he's never played it before, that would be amazing, but there were too many signs: he talked to the tadpoles 2, because the 3 time would kill you; while he looked at most notes, he didn't look at the one telling him not to be distracted, because then you can't interact with the center section down the hall, etc. I think he was just trying to create a good "show" play a little more in character by running further than necessary, acknowledging the random movements of items, and reading/interacting with everything. I love the way he played it personally, even though I've seen 4 other people play this, I can't help but watch it again(I really, really love this game) and really the only reason to watch others is for the reaction, because he certainly does the best at making it seem like a "movie".

These people are thrown away once they are no longer useful to you." I deeply believe this videogame portrays almost perfectly this statement: Ellen took advantage of Viola's kindness and pity by means of her magic and took her body. Once she traded bodies with Viola, Ellen would not give the body back, hence "throwing away" Viola. And to top it all off, Ellen (using Viola's body) goes to the house again just to... see how much Viola is suffering? She will get away with it and will take pleasure in having deceived Viola, and seeing how she is killed by her own father. All in all, considering Ellen's wretched intention and Viola's ordeal and final death, I think the black cat is the only token of hope and warmth in this game.

You miss the final talk with the cat and when you enter the witch's room the item descriptions and diary pages are different. Other secrets shown in this playthrough are the mid game conversation with the cat and books that appear if you revisit an area. So it is clarified why the witch keeps killing, how she got her powers, how the house came to be, why it tries to kill you but also gives you hints, what the cat really is and what it gets for helping you.

After reading the comments, it seems obvious that you guys haven't read "The Diary of Ellen", the official prequel of the game (is official, created by the game author). There you can understand why Ellen had to make Viola suffer. Why Ellen hated her parents. And a lot of other details. And no, after reading it, you wont think her actions are justifiable, but at least they would make sense; and it was not for sadism.

Such an amazing yet truly heartbreaking game. The only thing I don't quite understand is the part when you're walking through the poison, and another "Viola" falls from the ceiling. I suppose it was just supposed to be something to startle you, but considering the real ending, I can't understand why the "witch" would show something like that.

I pity both both :( Ellen just wanted to be loved and healthy, I mean if you were stuck for 7 years straight of your life looking out the window looking at kids play cheerfully and so full of life while your stuck with being in a dark room not able to do a thing would turn you insane. And her body was falling apart and wanted to live a healthy life and be loved. But in the end Ellen just didn't know Viola loved her. I feel dem for Ellen and Viola, there should be a game that follows up on this game of right before Viola died she used that last bit of magic to create a curse that would take 3 years to activate. (or more) And Ellen needs to make Viola rest in peace or else the curse won't stop, but by doing so Viola would get her body back and Ellen would be reborn again with a healthy young life while Viola took care of her

+Mlpsparklegem The major differences are you talk with the cat one last time before entering the witch's room but this time it is named "my room" if you decide to save when given the option (before you're chased out of the house). Also, the descriptions on the items and diary pages in the room are different if you reached this point without saving. BTW the title is not deceptive. This is a *no saves run* and the ending you get is the *true ending*.

To use those spells, as it seems from the books, you'd have to speak clearly or be able to stand tall and use your hands. Viola wasn't able to do that since Ellen gave throat-burning medicine and tore off the legs.

I think the 'GOOD" ending should be when you are running in the house away from "Ellen' or rather Viola in her body, and she gets caught. I mean it says Game Over, but In my mind it may be that Viola was successful in getting her body back?

And Ellen would not give up Viola's body so..no Viola would not be able to get her body back, *but* I do believe that letting Viola kill you(Ellen) should be an ending aswell. (Because at least it's slightly better than watching Viola get shot and that bitch Ellen live on. ;n;)

If you die at the spikes near the music floor and go back you can see it gets bloody, same thing with some messages like the one about the red shoes "I can't believe you tried them". I'm viewing this after watching another video about this so called "Hidden end" in order to verify that the other video was real, and it is so cool to see that the other video was not fake!! Unlike that other video called it, I think of this more as an "addition to the ending" than an entirely separate conclusion, but I argue that all the changes and details only present or revealed in this special run are all likely present in the true/"canonical" ending of the story. Ellen being able to breeze through the house without needing any help matches the manipulative, cunning, confident Ellen who is talking down to Viola during the extended ending. And so Ellen really is the one in control during this story. The final pieces that this "true route" offers, from the conversation with the cat, to the complete diary entries, to the fact that Ellen was destined to win the body by the time the game starts, all complete the narrative about Ellen and tie up the loose ends of this game. Also, the reveal about the body swap and Ellen taunting Viola at the end was heart wrenching to watch already, but now with these details, when we know that Ellen really only aimed to deceive Viola and cast her aside, all without a second thought, the scene just feels infinitely more sad. >:- ( Poor Viola. Maybe I'd be better off not knowing if it was real? ^,^"

Vgperson made an announcement that when she had translated the latest version, she made some minor adjustments to the text to be more accurate. In the Japanese version, Viola actually does say "Father, help." As for the distraction room, I seem to run into the same problem. I don't read the note and yet whenever I try to read the diary or speak to the cat, I end up dead as well. I'm at the part where Viola's on the highest floor of the house, with the garden/flowers/Elder Tree. The yellow flowers are having a tea party(?) in the left room, with plates of cake for each of them. A cake is consumed/plate is empty every time Viola completes a task on this floor. WHO IS EATING THE CAKES? Plants photosynthesize... or Ellen is eating them? Or maybe the cat is eating them while Viola is away... or, maybe MAGIC???

alright... what i'm gathering is Viola decided to go into the forest anyway because of all the Beautiful roses, creatures, and flowers, lost her way, and the only way to go back was Blocked off by Ellen's Growth of a Rosebush of her magic. sense horrored by losing her parents, had grown mad, Ellen eventually found a friend, that Demon, and made a pact so she would be able to be happy again.

I think the last chase scene with Viola catching Ellen should be an ending itself rather than a game over screen. The black cat is usually around to reverse time whenever Ellen dies. But he goes away once you reach the bedroom where Viola is. Without the black cat, Ellen has a severe disadvantage if she ends up getting herself killed. So if you let Viola capture you then Ellen should die for GOOD. No more coming back.

At this point, I'd take any bad ending for Ellen with some narrative meat, Wish the Steam version had that, but alas its just expansion of the existing endings where Ellen wins.

@@Teknanam I suppose making up a new ending in (somewhat) Viola's favor would ruin the whole point of the game. The thing is, despite allowing Viola to capture Ellen, Viola will still be unable to have her body back. Ellen must give consent for the body swapping spell to work. And Ellen refuses to give up her new healthy body. So nobody wins. Viola will be left stuck inside Ellen's mutilated body no matter what. While Ellen would most likely die if captured by Viola.

I actually don't mind a bittersweet ending where the only thing Viola can do is deny Ellen her goal of happiness through Viola's life. I don't need a happy ending. Just an ending where Ellen doesn't get away with her evil.

Poshie Po It's pretty simple actually, the real Viola died and couldn't keep Ellen trapped any longer. Remember how Ellen mutilated her own body before trading places with Viola? The debilitating illness, the pain + wounds + blood-loss, it's not wonder it took so little time for her to die.

In the end, I think viola got her body back, and that's why she stood by her dad. But, then again, she could've died in Ellen's body too.

Actually Viola died in Ellen's body and Ellen stood by Viola's dad because she wanted to convince him she's Viola. When Ellen(in Viola's body) leaves with Viola's dad, she laughs at Viola's death and follows after him :)

There was something on pewd's channel about there being a good ending, but you have to not SAVE nor DIE at all, to get it, and can't skip the cat's dialouge when you get to the room.

There is no good ending. This is a no save run and the difference is the last dialogue with the cat and the description Ellen gives to the objects in the final room as well as her monologue when reading the diary. Also if you click continue after you beat the game without saving you will see the final room is renamed from "Witch's Room" to "My Room"

Yuri Lix there is one that if you wait for an hour when you start again the big patch of roses disappear and viola goes home then again thats still ellen in viola's body but i see it as the best ending as viola doesnt get killed by her own father

courtneyjolley01 That was added on the 1.07 version of the game. The one I played was 1.06. IMO Viola has only 1 hour to live in the witch's body because of her injuries and dies so Ellen is able to escape without a fight.
