@Jerry C Lucky for you, and me... let alone everyone else. The devil in a Christian sense doesn't exist. :) But there is multi-dimensional E.T. energy vampires that would like you to believe so, and in fact... the true creators of the human race, as we are a product of genetic engineering. The cycle of life is eternal and infinite, there is no end and was no beginning. Anyone can find this truth out, if they do enough psychedelics (I recommend the natural stuff, like shrooms), but could also lose their mind in the process.
@159tony6 жыл бұрын
he doesn't hide anything though. He never lies. and i think a lot of people misunderstand what the devil really is in the bible. Samael is an angel of death. and all of the times when Gaunter uses his powers, someone apparently HAS TO DIE in the end. you can check everytime he uses his powers. someone always ends up dead. whether it's the poor saps on the ship, the guy that got lobotomy via a spoon, or the poor idiot that made the deal, regardless of how the deal ends up, the man will die with certainty. The two actual demons also seem to be going against him in the DLC, which would hint that he's by nature opposed to them. A king of demons he is not apparently. so that only leaves the answer that he must be an angel. or at least an accurate enough portrayal of what samael in particular is like in judeo christian lore. again, you can cross reference this if you want to see it for yourself.

Angels aren't real, but there is multi-dimensional E.T. that pose as such... same goes with Demons as well, or they could be thought-forms, but as for Angels and Demons 'themselves', they don't exist, but believe what you want... What ever helps you sleep at night!

Interesting note? What advise O'Dimm gives is basically the kind of ego-centric hedonism you'd find in actual Satanic philosophy by the likes of Anton LaVey. Funny isn't it how the devil is always a hopeless romantic?
@LabTech415 жыл бұрын
@@Mister-Thirteen Of course he would be; Evil is simply what we call it when a person only cares about themselves, and only works to better their own interests and desires. It's not simple selfishness, but egotism taken to it's logical endpoint. If you don't care about how the object of your 'affections' feels in the truest sense, then it's an easy enough think to manipulate them into getting what you want. Being old and omniscient enough to know how to push a woman's buttons, and deriving amusement from doing so doesn't make you a romantic, because a romantic has to truly love the object of his desire, and an Evil person only loves themselves. The irony about being evil is that nobody wants to fully accept that they're evil, so they'll always leave a crack in the door for something they can call 'good' to come in. O'Dimm's charming facade is what he uses to delude himself into thinking he's not wholly bad; the rules he makes with his pacts are how he excuses his monstrous actions by saying "it's not my fault, they just didn't think about what they wished for".
@Mister-Thirteen5 жыл бұрын
@@LabTech41 I can't say I agree. Cards on the table, I'm a LaVeyian Satanist. These philosophies are archetypal to my own. And what you're describing isn't egoism its narcissism which is as fair from logic as you can get. Egoism is recognizing that all your motives are inherently self-oriented and acting on that knowledge. Narcissism is what happens when you let your ego overwhelm your sense of reason. Narcissist can love others for reflecting what they love most in themselves, but an egoist loves others for what they do for them in all senses of that statement. "Romantic" is ultimately just a statement of old fashioned idealism, to play upon what is unknown and mysterious. It is merely the rejection of pragmatism and stoicism in a philosophical sense. In this manner O'Dimm's advise it just that, romantic and idealized over pragmatic and realistic. O'Dimm isn't human or mortal for that matter, he's no more reason to justify his action in anthropocentric terms like good and evil then you have justifying your own in barks and scent marking. But if we wish to put a label to him in those terms then we have to recognize the egoism inherent in that action.
@numerialized5 жыл бұрын
@@Mister-Thirteen @LabTech Grieves me to see that a simple misunderstanding ended this discussion. Let us continue please. @Mr.13 , @LabTech said "egotism" not "egoism". @LabTech romance is the exact opposite of pragmatism. Neither does it require love, nor does it require sincerity. In fact, intelligent sincerity is the end of romance. Therefore, I do not think your argument of "romantic has to truly love the object of his desire" is valid. Also, I believe that, the only people who use the terms of "good" and "evil" are the ones who want to assert their opinions on what is good and evil on other people by shaming what they do not like and encouraging what they like.

Do you think that this might actually be the best representation of the devil to ever be made in media, let alone games? CDPR plays him out perfectly in the biblical sense where he doesn't appear as evil at all when you first meet him, but rather, pleasant to be around. Further more, there are very few times when he gets his own hands dirty, yes he does from time to time but for the most part he influences people more than directly hurting them, he acts indirectly, suspiciously, and all with a charming smile on his face. I could go on for hours about this but i want to know if there have been any other representations of the devil as good as Gaunter, or better yet, what was the initial folk lore tale that inspired CDPR to make the character?

A great nod to him being the devil. He knew all the awful things, but he couldn’t see or know that Olgierd Loved his brother. Garunter can see lust but not love or at least understand it. So, what's the difference between the Pagan Devil, and the Abrahamic Devil, apart from the latter being a fallen archangel?
@maisikakk8 жыл бұрын
I think the difference is that Satan is absolute evil, a purely destroying and corrupting force, antithesis of God. Everything he does damages the Natural order. Pagan "Trickster's" deeds look similar at first, but ultimatively are beneficial for the mankind. He punishes weakness and foolishness, but can help out clever and resourceful people. Of course, in many legends, Satan plays this role as well.
@Kretek8 жыл бұрын
I love how people are saying stuff thay dont know nothing about. This whole story is based on Polish folk tale about sir Twardowski (Pan Twardowski in Polish). Nobleman who sold his soul to devil. This whole story is heavily influenced by Faust story. In fact, Twardowski is even called Polish Faust. And guess what, that devil was as you called this, "Satan of christians" (actually he was Mephistopheles, but who fucking cares, same thing). Beside, Christianity is so mixed with pre-christian believes (at least in folk tales) that it make actually no difference.

The Satan of Christians is not the same as the Abrahamic Satan. Long time ago Christianity was heavily influenced by Manichean beliefs cleverly injected into it by Augustine of Hippo. For a Manichean the ultimate good and evil are in equal footing, in the other side the Abrahamic Satan is just an underling without free will. People had to look somewhere else to depict a Satan far more powerful with its own agency. That is why the Pagan Satan looks so much like the Christian Satan.

Also, he clearly displays the seven deadly sins as well, either through himself or by pointing them out in others. Sloth - has Geralt fulfill Olgierd's wishes. Pride - Seems quite fond of his time-manipulation and powers in general and boasts about them. Envy - He sees through Vlodimir's facade and points out that the latter was jealous of his older brother. Lust - Catches on to romantic interactions quickly and urges Geralt and Shani to have sex. Greed - His desire for souls and his manipulative nature aimed at getting as much out of his deals as possible. Gluttony - Seems to enjoy food despite being a supernatural being that likely doesn't have to eat, has the apple reference going on and his overal behaviour at the wedding all carry this theme. Wrath - Can be unduly cruel for no reason in particular. He tortured Vlodimir's soul for the sake of it and also killed a man by putting a spoon through his skull just for interrupting him. His contracts also seem to be based around people exhibiting these sins, turning to him in order to revel in them.

Also, the last wish is very know among Witcher fans, so I assumed this... Creature was a djinn at first, powerful djinn. But no, this is something else, a being far above a insignificant djinn, this shit is really dangerous lol the evil that cannot be explanained is something terrifying, we can relate the evil incarnate to any kind of reality, our own and other stories. It's a entity, an idea, the most dangerous thing imaginable. And geralt had the guts to deal with such a being. It is a fanfic at the end of the day, the greatest fanfic ever made, but the actual character of geralt would NEVER help Olgierd at the end. Risking his life for a nobody, dealing with something he can't comprehend? Hell no, geralt has a sense of preservation like any sane individual... But the gameplay dictates that we can have choices. I believe book geralt would simply fulfill his end of the bargain, then get the fuck away lol he would not ask about Ciri or anything else, it's not wise to create any kind of debt or sympathy with the devil, no freaking way

In many mythologies throughout time there has always been a trickster type figure as part of a pantheon. Neither good nor evil, he just tests people playing tricks on them that usually teach something, or takes their life/something most precious to them when they fail. Whether that's their soul, all of their riches, their prideful ability to sing, someone most dear to them or whatever they value most. Gaunter is just another one of those figures, like Loki, Lucifer, Prometheus or any other. He's the one who tricks gods into drinking oceans, or loosing a wrestling match against time. He's sort of the balancing force. A leveller of all things, and only the cleverest/most sly/bravest usually win against him, if at all.

Gaunter, 42:00 minute mark, is eating an apple. In the Abrhamic mythos, the Devil is seen 'offering' an apple to Eve to tempt, the Tree of Knowledge in Genesis. He also clearly references a "Hell" while speaking with Vlodimir, basically if you don't leave, I will take you to Hell. He's standing near a tree, appletree where the came from? (THere was one on the ground earlier when talking to Vlodimir) Same scene, Gaunter talking about temptation about 'surrending' to it or the human flesh, original sin or some might say, "free will". At some part of the game Olgierd says that he even ripped his shirt begging of mercy - it's referencje to polish painting 'Reyten' in which polish nobleman rips his shirt to defend the Third May Constitution. Main plot is of course adaption of Pan Twardowski. And there is pretty much more of this...

i love how the Geralt theme is coming in 0:47 when he begin his new adventure
@matto61168 жыл бұрын
I find that letting Olgired's soul get taken is the better ending, and fits Geralts personality. He has risked everything to find Yenn (least in my play through) and Ciri. The risk of having "Satan" as an enemy to take it all away, is too great for a strangers soul. Master Mirror is a unknown and Geralt likes to know a enemy ( Oils, bestiary, etc). Lots of people say Geralt is stronger than O Dimm, but in the next playthrough we see the Elder vampire is a much more powerful being, so it shows that Geralt does indeed have a limit to his power. I am happy that Geralt and Yenn are making wine together, without the threat of "Satan". Also, I think Master Mirror is cool xD

Can't say I agree. Going by the canon of his character, Geralt is not one want to choose even the lesser of two evils, so I find it hard that he'd ever side with the personification of evil itself, even if he did disagree with whoever was on the spear-end of evil's weapon.

Wait... who the fuck thinks Geralt is stronger than O Dimm? He can inconvenience him by beating him at his riddles game and denying him a soul. But he is an immortal, time manipulating entity with the ability to appear or disappear at will, and take your soul at a touch. Gaunter O Dimm is something far worse than all of the other supernatural shit Geralt has to deal with, including elder vampires, crones or the hunt. All of those are at worst from different worlds, while it seems Gaunter is from a different level of existence, possibly the multiverses version of Satan or other incarnation of evil.

This arc was awesome! O’Dimm was the first character since I was little to make me feel genuine unease or fear toward a video game character. Great great character and story!

Geralt might successfully get out of O'dimm's contract for now. But after knowing his usefulness O'dimm may return to him anytime. Just as he said before leaving Geralt: "But I do know if I ever have trouble collecting debt, I shall turn to a Witcher." Knowing O'dimm, he may put Geralt in a situation where he is left without a choice but to be forced into a contract to do his bidding.

In South american countries there are stories of humans facing a mysterious and charming man, making deals and being put to the test. In my country this mysterious figure has been appointed to be the devil, he has challenged people in artistic and intellectual competence; and has been also made responsible of moving giant rocks of the size of cathedrals in order to built roads through the mountains. Its interesting how he seems to have similar roles in far away places like Poland.

I think he's definitely the Devil in the Witcher universe. In a lot of stories, the Devil isn't necessarily evil in the sense that it insta-kills whoever it wants, instead, they play with their victims and torment them. This also means there's likely similar existences above or equal to him (i.e. God/s). O'Dimm says he doesn't want to meddle with Ciri, this means, something, likely on a 4 dimensional scale either protects, or has something planned for Ciri. Perhaps it's "Fate" itself, maybe Ciri's destiny is certain to come to fruition, so much so that O'Dimm is powerless to intervene no matter what he tries... he can see the future after all.

Beyond the usuals as to why Gaunter is the devil there are more…he wears gold and blue clothes which coincidentally are the colours of freemasons a group of people that are associated with devil worshiping…also a lot of times he does with his hands a triangle which also is a sign from this group…add on the flowers in the head which looks like a mockery of the thorns Jesus had and there you are…

I just thought of something interesting. Listen to when gaunter speaks at the cross roads with Geralt. He talks about his talents and associates. Maybe that’s why he has to abide by certain rules because he made a pact with his associates who are probably equally as powerful. 😈😳

Or he made a deal with the counterpart of himself: Maybe with this universes god. Maybe this is why he cannot interfere or otherwise do things as he wants to for certain events. Other gods are watching and only allowing him to do things in a form of contract that he is forced to obey at if he wants to collect souls. If there is someone like O'Dimm around then there must be more Entities like hijm around and I am not talking about Demons, just neutral ones or good ones.

Noticed a few things: - Every time Gaunter appears near other people, someone mentions the "devil" in conversation before or after his appearance. - Gaunter appears on the boat in the intro and looks at the ladle admiringly, only to stab someone with a ladle at the bar. - Pebbles the cat makes a cameo walking in front of the burning house. - At the burning house in the beginning, the guy cries out for God to help him. Moments later Gaunter appears - not because he's god, but because he's the devil rejoicing that god never came. - When Gaunter is talking to Geralt at the crossroads in the beginning, he says a lot of things that sounds like metaphors - but become actual truths later on. He says Olgreid has a heart of stone and makes it seem like he's cold hearted, but it's Gaunter's fault. Gaunter says he doesn't need muscle, he needs an intelligent soul (emphasis on soul)

Everyone keeps arguing about who he 'really' is. Wanna know who he is? Wanna know the secret absolute truth? He's Gaunter O'Dimm. He's a very interesting, very cool character written specifically for a game. His makers drew from a lot of folklore involving genies, the devil, possibly a bit of Lovecraft, and even some Stephen King. He has qualities that have, in some stories, been associated with devil figures. In the end though, he is his own character. Besides, if the biblical Satan was in this universe, it would mean that Yahweh would have to be, and at that point your whole cosmology goes mad.
