I loved the 90's film and most of Roald Dahl's books, because they weren't afraid to go into dark areas, though the 2020 version of The Witches failed in my opinion by removing everything that felt British as they forced it into a primarily black area, making it feel like a lazy raceswap. They should've done a sequel, where the kid from the original, is chasing after the remaining few witches, who were hiding out in the black neighborhood of the film, of course they'd have to rework the awful designs too, but at least it would've been a creative way to go, instead of just making it into The Witches Dis Time In Da Hood!!

Three things: 1) I read the original book in elementary school, and it looked gross. 2) I saw the 1990s movie right afterward, and 1) It is way more accurate to the characters from the book, and 2) I was so scared from it, I had nightmares when I went to sleep later that same night. However, what cheered me up from that was my introduction to Walking With Monsters: Life before dinosaurs (2005) when it was still on Netflix in the U.S. 3) I immediately knew the 2020 movie was going to be worse than the original, even if the latter terrified me. I had a hunch about this when I realized that Chris Rock narrated the first trailer. I am so disappointed by it. Edit: The third female mouse in the 2020 movie is *NOT* in the original book. And that was another thing that disappointed me about the 2020 movie.

What they REALLY messed up about the 2020 Grand High Witch is the appearance. Anne Hathaway had the accurate appearance for this villain, not only for her beauty but her long, black hair. So instead of taking advantage of it, they give her a short, blonde wig.

The old one will always be special to me. I have a story on why: When I was six or seven, my mum was away for the night, so it was just me, my dad, my brother, and my sister. I was sobbing because I hated sleeping in my own room and my mum usually let me sleep in hers, but my dad said I couldn't sleep in his. My sister, who was fifteen or sixteen, saw I was upset, and took me into her room. She had a double bed so that we could curl on it together without getting uncomfortable, and she got some sweets and sugar drinks, and she let me pick a film on Netflix. The Witches, 1990 version, was on there, and even though the image terrified me (it was of the Grand High Witch in her true form), I still wanted to watch it. We sat there for about fifty minutes, watching the film, until my dad came in and made us go to bed. That memory is so special to me, and I remember how heartbroken I was when they took it off of Netflix.

I’m surprised Roald Dahl despised the 1990 version. Sure they changed the ending but an ending can’t completely change the film. The movie is still faithful to the book. And while the 2020 version does in some ways is more faithful plot wise, the whole feeling the film is too cartoony and tame, unlike the 1990’s dark yet heartwarming feel.

The original story that the grandma told of the child getting put into the painting, and eventually dying, still gives me goose bumps to this day (and again later in the film when we see another child in a painting fade away). The remake story of the girl being turned into a chicken had me laughing. However, when the dad (I think it's the dad, anyway) says "that's the biggest chicken I've ever seen", not knowing that it's his daughter, for a second I thought that the family were going to kill and eat the chicken girl... before I realised that that would be way too fucked up for a children's movie!

The original was like the book. The remake is completely different from the book. The only thing besides the title that is the same is the basic plot of witches staying at a motel changing kids into mice. Originals are based on books. When they do a remake they have nothing to do with the book. Their basis is solely OFF of the original. They are pretty much like, "what book?" Fact is the book describes the characters as white so there is a very big reason to ignore the book and say its based off the original movie which takes away the credit of the book and it's writer. I don't care about the race difference but when you read a book description is everything in order to picture the story. It's the writers creation and anything changing from the book upsets me. Which is done in every single movie based on a book. Subtle changes ok. But big changes I feel they are stealing and destroying from the writer. Especially these old ones. Sitting at a type writer anytime before 1980s and putting out a complete story and it get published, sold and people read and enjoy it. I can't imagine.

I mean. At least the 90's version ending was like "Oh. cool. Happy ending to not scare the kids". But, yea, that's also why I am skeptical for any remake/reboot because it's either low effort...well, mainly low effort. I'd rather just watch any movie with a cohesive story with the visuals connecting that makes you that switch in your head go off and you're like "oh damn". I've seen the 90s movie, and ironically, watched it with my grandparents 7 times. Funny you brought it up because I always forget about the girl in the painting because my mind is more stuck on the Witch's practical effects. Anyway, I'll a generic happy ending over some weird pop everyone's dancing ending. At least he was like "Don't forget about Bruno" when the good witch left. It is a possibility to redo this movie and do it by the book (no pun intended)

I was willing to give this movie a chance... But now I regret ever doing so. Robert, what happened to you? Why did you do this to del Toro's dream project?

I reckon they just made the movie more family friendly but the scene in the lobby when they all walk in in the 2020 is scarier

Late on this: I feel like Anna Hathaway is more like a Saturday morning cartoon villain while the og one is more like a legit horror villain for kids

Man that's true. Back when we were kids they had some terrifying shit that was meant for children! But all it did was give us nightmares....and we LOVED IT! Sadly you won't get that now a days. Once again, this is yet another remake I don't understand why it exist. It felt more like a parody of the original. In fact, THAT'S what they should have done. Not to say it would have been a masterpiece, but it would at least not be as bad. I REALLY wish these filmmakers would stop remaking these memorable children movies. What we love about them, were the story, characters, the atmosphere, the feel, soundtracks, special hand on effects and some of the most scary imaginary. But now these filmmakers will take these films, redo them poorly and call them art. Sad. With THAT being said, I'm actually scared that they secretly have more planned. All I gotta say to that is, fuck the remakes and watch the originals.

Hello Eric. Hope your staying safe during this pandemic. Just heard the news that Warner Bros. Is putting ALL 2021 movies to BOTH HBO Max and theaters. What is your initial thoughts.
@HRY1004 жыл бұрын
Hey Eric. Great video btw. I will check out the 90s version of the film, later. But if I am hearing this right. Both Disney and Warner Bros. are considering to put Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow on streaming. Do you support this or rather wait for another delay.
@EricCarter124 жыл бұрын
I would prefer if they just put them on streaming at this point. The hype has died down. And they might aswell release them. Also I have a 4K Projector so I personally will still get a good cinema experience. So I'm not that bothered.
@HRY1004 жыл бұрын
@@EricCarter12 I could agree with you. Just wish Black Widow was released in 2019. Rather than Captain Mary Sue. So SHE could get the delay problems NOT Black Widow.

You should do a VS Video between Nickelodeon's Classic Masterpiece, Avatar The Last-Airbender and it's inferior but good sequel/spin-off, The Legend Of Korra, considering that they are both on Netflix. If not, what are your thoughts ?

Hey Eric, Can you review this movie called Wonder.Its a movie about a facially deformed kid going to school for the first time.Our class read this book in fifth grade and we also saw the movie.I personally enjoyed it.It’s a 6/10 imo but I wonder what you think of it

Also I grew up with the original and I loved it so much. The remake is inferior by your review and the trailer alone.
