I believe that IT(2017) showed the gruesome death of Georgie to elicit emotion and dread. As you said, it sets the tone, and casts a shadow over everything that follows. Watching a villain get killed is cathartic, therefore, it dulls the suspense. That means showing the death of the bully wouldn't have added anything narratively or thematically. Great video. Really well done.
@captainpungent5 жыл бұрын
The horrible CGI takes me out of it. Plus, by the end battle the kids do not fear It, which makes part 2 pointless. In the book they're scared shitless because they can be killed by It, Henry and his goons and the flood in the sewers, where they're risking being drowned in a maze of darkness. I hope that they make a Netflix type series where they can delve into the book more and keep the original time frame to keep the classic monster motif, and not just what the director finds nostalgic. This movie will not age well, like part 2 of the mini-series because it lacks effective scares.

The more you experience something, the more aware and less scared you are of it.

His death was so much better in the book anyway. His arm was pretty much torn out of it's socket. The description of the scene was much better and more brutal than either movie of TV series. Though I much prefer the way the 90s version handled the whole interaction between Georgie and Pennywise. What kid (in either decade) what reach their arm in to get anything from Skarsgard's Pennywise?..
@thesubatomicman36617 жыл бұрын
The 1990s miniseries actually stays very close to the book. As with the same argument most people have in the comments, Pennywise was always meant to look human for the most part. The 1990s miniseries is a much more psychological horror film. It needed the adults to portray the message the book carried on too about child hood trauma. The book was never made to scare you with a clown, it was made to make you scared that there’s probably something YOU’RE hiding from yourself too. It’s the sight of grown adults being reverted to the mental state of their horrified younger selves that’s supposed to unnerve you. The remake was decent, but if you ask me, even with some of the cheesy stuff and a lack of actual gore, the miniseries will always be better. The remake suffered from misunderstanding what pennywise was made to do.
@leopardprints3 ай бұрын
I feel that the 1990 version captures and depression and helplessness of the book. Plus it's set in the 50s and the juxtaposition of a more innocent time with the horrors of Pennywise makes it more harrowing. And as you say, it portrays who and what Pennywise is much better. Had they been given a bigger budget and allowed to go full rated R and not constrained by TV limitations, it would have been so much better. I think they did an amazing job with what they had to work with. 2017 is a straight up jumpscare horror with too much CGI. As a movie, it's fine. It's just not Pennywise.

One thing people need to understand is that people (like myself) who were kids back when the miniseries came out have 2 things that newer generations don't. A: The nostalgia factor, and B: back then, kids weren't really allowed to watch these kinds of movies. We didn't have the type of exposure that newer generations do by way of television, the Internet, video games, etc. It's because of that exposure that kids these days are more numb to things that us older folks would have (and did in some cases) found terrifying. We had to find ways around our parents to watch anything scary, so we didn't see anywhere near as much as kids today do. Innocence sort of died after the 90's. A lot of the things kids today watch and/or play that they shrug a shoulder at would have had us shitting our pants if we'd seen it as kids. Younger generations see way more violence and horror from a really young age all the time now, so they tend to look at most of what we were afraid of and raise questioning brow. Like Child's Play. I'm STILL terrified of anything remotely resembling a Good Guy Doll (and I'm 34!). My 10 year old thinks it's hilarious. I adore Tim Curry, and I think he did the best he was able with what he was given to work with. While the new IT is more polished and scary, Tim Curry's take on Pennywise will forever be remembered as the man who made this role as iconic as it is.
@roxaroo7 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree on that.
@vhenan23417 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was trying to get my point across without writing a novel, hoping people wouldn't take it like I was saying something negative about younger generations. Honestly, I don't believe it's really fair to pit these two adaptations against one another simply because one is rated R. Had the miniseries been an actual movie with a theatrical debut, an R rating (and, in my opinion, a better adult cast... besides Pennywise that is), who knows what we might have today. However, when it comes to movies that are made for TV, there are a LOT of guidelines that have to be adhered to. Especially ones from back in those days. We didn't have shows like The Walking Dead where violence and gore is perfectly fine. That's why I always get so irritated with these types of videos because It's honestly not a very fair comparison.
@vhenan23417 жыл бұрын
Gabriella Shelton Nobody said it wasn't. I just don't believe these two adaptations should be compared for the reasons I stated above. While the movie may be a better adaptation, it has an R rating to back it up. Something you need to take into consideration. Also, whether you believe the old or new is better, the irrefutable fact still remains that the original is still what made the role iconic.

Right from the start, Billy wasn't mourning Georgie because he was still clinging to him being alive since it was left ambiguous for the characters in the movie as opposed to the mini series and book, the scene where Pennywise turns in to Georgie in the tunnels was so much more impactful because of this, Bill accepting what happened and pulling the trigger.
@vhenan23417 жыл бұрын
Comics Champion That shouldn't have happened though. In the book, the neighbor across the street from the sewer finds Georgie right after IT finishes him off, and if they would have gone that route and added in the scene where Bill and Richie were looking through the picture book in Georgie's room afterwards, /that/ would have been way more terrifying.

Frisk The Fabulous it was a different direction for the story, I honestly liked that since it deviated from the book when Georgie showed up you genuinely weren't 100% if he was alive, you knew Bill would kill him just what would the result be. just made that scene great for me 😄

Comics Champion I'm not sure how it would be possible to wonder if he was dead or alive though due to the brutal and gore filled way Pennywise got him in the beginning.

Frisk The Fabulous keeping him and tormenting him I don't know, in retrospect obvious just in the scene have a bit of doubt. At any rate the important thing in the scene is the kids don't know, the tension in Billy's decision it's great!
@vhenan23417 жыл бұрын
Comics Champion I suppose. I guess as far as that in particular, I prefer the way it was portrayed in the miniseries and book. It gave Bill such a better character arch, and by his grief fueling the vengeful fire burning within, him becoming the leader of the group was so much more believable because of his grief, guilt and anger/hatred. It also helped make him a deeper and more well rounded character on a variety of levels. But to each their own. I don't think any less of you for your opinion. Just giving an alternative opinion from the other side of the spectrum. :)
@jaredw33797 жыл бұрын
In my opinion I liked the grieving process of Billy in the newest movie. It showed denial. He seemed like he couldn't believe his brother was dead. He wanted to turn the next corner and find his brother waiting for him. Seemed pretty sad to me.
@kanyne71157 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY!!! some people claim him to not be affected at all and blame supposed: "poor acting" but I know from experience that denial is a really heavy thing. My mom died in 2013 and to this day: I expect to see her, talk to her, laugh with her; just about everything we used to do. but despite me knowing she's gone, my brain clings to an inkling of hope that it is just a nightmare
@nanaki31856 жыл бұрын
Denial is not a something everyone experiences, in fact most people don't go through this even when a loved one is missing ( I work in the legal system); further, both my brothers died when I was a child, I never denied their death. So, to each their own on that one. Nevertheless, this is the problem with movie adaptations of books. Of course things have to be changed. However, directors often pick idiotic things to change. In this case the George-Bill story arc. George's death in the book, and unchanged (mostly) in the mini-series, was important to the overall story. IT feeds off fear, not really the people, which is never really explained in the movie (or, the mini-series). George was the first child killed in 1957, after an event woke IT up (how IT is awakened is also yet to be or may not be explained in the movie, nor was it in the mini-series). George's death was purposefully gruesome, and yet it wasn't for IT to feed, instead it was meant to provoke fear, especially among the children who's imaginations run wild. That's why IT left George's body to be found. Notice, that after George is killed, all the children go "missing" which further promotes the fear, but it is because of what happened to George that makes these "missing" cases more terrifying to everyone in Derry. There is more to it, but basically the way the new movie portrayed the events both eliminated that gruesome fear and stripped Bill of his true character. Bill was originally a grieving brother, who knows his brother was murdered, and knows that the adults are ignoring what's going on (an overarching plot in the book and in the mini-series, and hinted at stupidly in the new movie), and is therefore determined to find out what happened to his brother (which is how IT is actually discovered). Bill is the leader of the "Losers" because he is strong. However, in the new movie, the decided to make him a weak and frail character who cannot face reality. Seriously, who believes that a child can be swept away in an average rainstorm, yet leave a large pool of blood on the ground, be missing for months, and still be alive... They stripped away his purpose, and instead they are left with stumbling dumbly into IT. I like the new movie, but they definitely ruined that part and in the process ruined a few major plot points, and a major character and his major purposes. They also ruined a few other characters, and the directors upcoming "plans" are not going to fix them.

0:50 "When I thought that Billy was grieving over his dead brother, I thought it was garbage. He completely lacked all the emotional responses one would go through when dealing with the death of a younger sibling." INNER FANBOY COMING OUT IN 3... 2... 1... EXCUSE ME? What did you mean he lacked the emotional responses? I mean, it's not like the death of Georgie was his lead motivation and the whole reason why he was hunting Pennywise to begin with. He tried to discover what happened to his brother and refused to believe he died. Is it because "He didn't cry in the movie"? 1. He did cry in the end, after realizing that Georgie's dead. 2. Someone doesn't have to always cry just to be sad, you don't see depressed people constantly breaking down on the streets in tears. 3. Georgie's been missing for months, why would he still be physically crying every single day? He had a lot of scenes where he showed he truly cared for Georgie. He was looking for him in the sewers in the beginning, he made that speech about stopping Pennywise, he tried to catch up to Pennywise in the haunted house, and he cried in the end after accepting Georgie's death. Plus, it was obvious he was depressed because of Georgie's death, not only because his brother died, but also because his parents stopped caring about him afterwards. Of course the biggest evidence of him caring for his brother was the scene when he finally accepts his brother's death. He broke down in tears for crying out loud! If you honestly believe that Billy didn't show that he cared for his brother's death, you either 1. Didn't watch the movie. 2. Read the Wikipedia synopsis. 3. Didn't pay attention to the film. I refuse to continue watching this video because I care for It as a whole deeply, and your starting point was in your words, "garbage". Good day to you. @anabgoes5 жыл бұрын
People can understand that scene better when reading the book. It was one of the ways to tell how they needed the seven of them to get rid of Pennywise. In the book, the kids are always thinking about how it seems to have a type of force bringing them together and that's true, it's the Turtle (the entity opposite of It). It helped the 7 in many ways when they were kids until they realized it was needed the Lucky 7 to win over Pennywise. The bloody sink only finally getting clean after all the kids help Beverly with it was part of understanding it.

Yeah the guy who made this video obviously didny read the book. Ennoys me. Then he would understand that the mini series was much better in many ways
@tylerevans45825 жыл бұрын
@@Donnouri1 I have a couple issues with this take on things. Firstly, I don't think it's really necessary for them to perfectly adapt the book. Making changes to suit the medium is a good thing. The way things are structured in the book simply wouldn't work as well in a movie. I think it's far more useful to compare the miniseries and the movies on their own, without worrying about the book. The miniseries/movies need to stand on their own anyway. If people have to read the book to understand a scene in the miniseries, then the miniseries did not successfully execute that scene. This next part's just my opinion, but I would even disagree that the book is better than the new movies. I got super into IT in anticipation for the movies, and honestly, the book has a lot of issues. It gets super weird. All the cosmic stuff (especially the turtle) really ruined the tension for me, and you also get stuff like the infamous scene when the kids were leaving the sewers. You know the one... When I learned Stephen King was doing a ton of drugs while writing the book, I was not surprised in the least.
@Donnouri15 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. But the guy who made this video doesnt understand the influence IT had on the town. And yes, the book got crazy, but the cosmos part and Turtle has to do with the Dark Tower series. Stephen Kings books all connect in the King Universe. The child sex scene in the book was indeed weird. To strenghten their band? hmm. Good they did not include that in the movie

I actually think Pennywise's voice in the new one during the first scene was way better. Curry looks less evil, sure, but Bill was in the shadow and his look was still hidden to Georgie. Plus, the dialogue itself was better, because it's seems like IT was trying to create a friendship with the child. Also, that simple "Bill is gonna kill you" was a really great line, because now we can see more clearly why Georgie didn't simply go away

I went back and watched the 2017 movie again as I thought I may have been too harsh on it the first time I saw it, but man I've gotta say I really don't think I was. 1990 still takes it for me. Personally I think the first half of the 1990 original had more charm and character, while doing a good job of leaving certain things to the imagination. You could also really feel the bond that the 7 members of the losers club had. Jarred Blancard did an incredible job as Henry, and as for Pennywise - Tim Curry absolutely nailed it. The movie had a few good points but overall lacked a lot of what the original had in terms of atmosphere and pacing.

Some of the things you mention as being odd about the bullies, just stem from the fact that decades ago, it was more accepted that "boys will be boys" and violence wasn't necessarily treated in the same way it is today. It used to be pretty bad tbh.
@anabgoes5 жыл бұрын
One of the main changes It (2017) made was the location where the kids would hang out and that was mainly affected by Bill's belief that his brother was still alive. From him making a replication of the sewer system, to saying to Richie multiple times Georgie was just missing (indirectly or not) til the point he punched him, to constantly taking his friends to the sewer to search for Georgie (who's body was never found), to almost believing Pennywise was his brother for a split second and then to him finally breaking down with the acceptance that his brother was dead (both in the scenes where he tells Pennywise as Georgie everything he wanted to tell his little brother and after finding his raincoat), the movie made pretty clear how Bill was feeling about Georgie's disappearance. Also, Bill's stuttering got way worse after Georgie went missing. Despite this topic, this was a great video.

Nice video, but i Don't think you realize how difficult it is to get an accurate reading on a film from years ago. You see there were many moments in the 1990 film that audiences were seeing for the 1st time ever, & the thought was terrifying, like seeing a photo of little Billy winking his eye, or having it bring a photo into live motion & his hand reaching out of the book. As a viewer, seeing a moment like that, that had not been in other movies caught me off guard & made me think of how terrifying it would be for that to happen in real life. When i saw the 2017 It come through the screen, i though this looks corny, because i had already seen it. Even watching the showers turn on by themselves & surround Eddy was creepy at the time because i had never saw a that in a movie. Or adult Bev having a zombie father chase her out of thew house was scary, but now i've seen 1million zombies so that part isn't scary to see in 2017. But I can honestly say, although i love the 2017 film, i was never scared or felt creeped out at any point, i just enjoyed watching Pennywise because I'm a fan of the franchise. But when i watched the 1990 series, although i was just a kid, I was absolutely terrified at certain scenes, i would actually look away during the scene when Stan is stuck in the house as the Mummy clown walked down the steps toward him, just the thought of being trapped in the house with a mummy creeped me out so much. But now i have seen 10,000 mummies.

The worst kind of bully were had in shool were guys who would talk shit. The guys Stephin king writes are complete and utter psychopaths, thats way more then bullying.

Bill Skarsgard is the best It, but Tim Curry is the best Pennywise the dancing clown. Yeah, the new film is better, but Tim's performance will always be more iconic ..until us Gen X'ers all die off.

@Kagereneko really most of the non cgi stuff like his movements his eyeys his voice his unpredictable nature and his acting skills man even without cgi bill is the best and tim even with this new technology will the same pennywise the dancing clown

The real Reason The remake was better. It wasn't only about freaky AF but it had actual story and characters that we loved, Most horror movies now are just there to be as scary as possible and it's sickening and doesn't make you like it, it just makes you not want to sleep that night, and nothing else. Which is not fun for anyone.
