As I got older i started to recognize the deep meaning to this film. How all of the characters (Lion, Scarcrow, and Tin-man represents a piece of Dorothy, all of her fears and insecurities. By helping them conquer their fears she really conquering hers as well.

Sometimes it’s easier to help others before you can help yourself, especially if you don’t believe you’re worth it. Really, if you’re a helpful, generous person by nature; you’re already worthy of help, so just accept it.

My sister had this album on vinyl and I used to listen to it back when I DJ’ed…tried mixing in “Brand New Day” into a funky house set, but I never got it to work. Anyway, it wasn’t until much much later that I saw the film and kinda got it and realized just how great the show is. Shame it gets/got so much hate.

Thanks for reacting to this underrated film! The transfer of the stage musical to an urban environment was brilliant and the arrangements and music supervision by the great Quincy Jones was spectacular, really serving the wonderful songs well. And of course Ross, Jackson and company are all magnificent vocally. ❤️
@ateam404
@ateam404 Жыл бұрын
Jones did not score this film. 95% of the music is from the original broadway score written by Charlie Smalls and Luther Vandross. Jones with Ashford and Simpson wrote a few songs for Ross (none are fan favorites) however Jones did re-arrange some of music to match with the theatrical dance sequences which were of course much bigger than the stage production.

Right out the gate, Quincy Jones really turns up the juice on the music, and getting legendary harmonica player Toots Thielmanns in the mix is next level stuff. I love Ted Ross as the Lion, he's just so funny and lovesble. And that's not to take anything from the rest of the cast. There's not a slouch performance to be found. Shame "Is This What Feeling Gets?" was cut from thr movie, but it is on the soundtrack (that's the sweeping melody you hear st the end of the opening credits, and when they cross the bridge to get to Emerald City). Dorothy apparently sings it in the hotel room before the others come in to discuss what to do about Evillene. Nipsey Russell is the Tin Man. He was also known as "The Poet Laureate of Television." He made many appearances as a a celebrity guest on game shows in the 70's and 80's and even hosted one or two. With every appearance, he would recite a short and funny poem, which he also did as part of his stand up routines.

As a huge lover of the original 1939 classic Wizard of Oz, this movie was a disappointment to me when it first came out. But we're talking about a young, white boy growing up in suburban Texas who had no vision of the Black experience and to whom NYC and Harlem was like a different planet. Over the years I began to listen to the soundtrack over and over, and I fell in love with the songs and Quincy Jones's arrangements. The movie has grown in my affections over the years and I see it now for the fascinating film it is, not as a carbon copy of the original. It is also a period piece which nostalgically captures the late seventies, disco, the World Trade Center, etc. After I moved to New York in 2009, I have enjoyed this movie a number of times and still love its music and love the recognizable landmarks. It truly holds a warm place in my heart and I was so happy to see you enjoy it.

In the original book, there were about three paragraphs before the cyclone came along and whisked Dorothy off to Oz - although of course the MGM movie devoted a lot of footage to the pre-Oz story. (Also, in the book, Oz was a real place and Dorothy's trip was NOT a dream, so the book didn't have to introduce Kansas characters who would show up in Dorothy's dream.) Also, in the book, Dorothy was a mere 8 years old or so, while 16-yo Judy Garland was trying to play her as a 12-yo. (They had to strap her chest in tightly to help foster this illusion.) And Diana Ross is supposed to be 24 yo here, another step up. Given that the overall scheme of '39 movie deviated so much from the book (in some important respects) and The Wiz takes it ever further, it is a testimony to the fundamentals to the original story that it works so well. But one point to make is that the original book was the first fairy tale to have a child as a hero. Most traditional fairy tales deal with adult princesses and princes. Both Hansel & Gretel and Alice in Wonderland have children as the main character but Dorothy was the first to have her be the prime mover in leading the action, not just responding to it. (Heidi, a decade or two earlier than the Oz book was similar but not a fairy tale as such.) Fairuza Balk was only 11 when she played a much younger (and therefore closer to the book version) of Dorothy in Disney's Return to Oz. (Many criticize this movie as being too dark but actually is much closer to the original series in mood - frankly having been raised on the books, I love this movie.)

I've never seen the musical on which this movie was made but I do know that it follows the original book much closer than the MGM musical. But the film totally shifts Oz from being a totally magical faraway land to downtown Manhattan. In some ways this was very creative and other ways, starts to make the film a really different version - but I don't think there is anything wrong with that. More power to more retelling of this story.

Its a Berry Gordy movie and it is full of music, comedy and Martial arts. Berry Gordy is the Founder of Motown records and also Vanity is in this movie. She is Prince Ex girlfriend of the early 80s from the music group called Vanity 6.

You know, I was wondering...the only difference between this version of the Wizard of Oz and the 1939 one--well, besides the obvious 1970s feel to the whole thing--was that this one didn't have real life human versions of the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion in Dorothy's life at home in New York. In the old one, they were the three farm hands that assisted Uncle Henry and Auntie Em on the farm. I wonder why they changed it for this one?

"Now I'll never get my brain!" "Nor my heart." "Or my courage." "But you don't need them now because you've had them all the time. Scarecrow, you're the one who figured out how to find the yellow brick road and how to destroy Evillene, and every smart move we've made, didn't you? Lion, you wouldn't even give up when Evillene strung you up by your tail. And, Tin Man, you have more heart than anyone I've ever known." I love this movie. Sick beats, memorial lyrics, fun time, and when will you see Michael Jackson in a major motion picture. If you don't like this movie, I don't want you within 10 feet of me. Fun Fact: The original NYC production of "The Wiz" opened at the Majestic Theater on January 5, 1975, starring Stephanie Mills, ran for 1,672 performances and won the 1975 Tony Awards for the Best Musical and Score and was nominated for Best Book. Location Location Fact: In his book, Sidney Lumet admits that filming the Emerald City sequence on the plaza at the World Trade Center had to be cut short because of wind and scheduling. The red sequence had to be shortened due to a lighting error, and there was no time to re-shoot. The Port Authority would not allow more time to fix mistakes. Casting Shenanigans Fact: Motown Productions bought the rights to the stage show, intending to cast Stephanie Mills as Dorothy. However, Diana Ross lobbied intensely for the role. Everyone, including Motown head and ex-lover Berry Gordy believed that she was too old, but she insisted that the role of Dorothy was ageless (which it is). She also said she would be able to guarantee Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow if she was cast.

The cabs keep going "off duty" so they wouldn't have to pick up black people just like in real life.

This was not that great a movie but love the musical performances. Still listen to “you can’t win” and “ease on down the road” to this day

This is one of the worst films ever made. It's absolutely horrendous and tedious.

So I’m just gonna say this, was not a fan of Michael Jackson as the scarecrow. I’m sorry I just found it creepy. Him notwithstanding I absolutely loved every other member of the cast, the songs were inspired, I loved that they decided to make Oz a replica of New York City, Richard Pryor was the perfect wizard (though I would’ve rather seen him as a scarecrow), and I literally get chills down my spine when Dorothy sings home and then click her heels.
