It actually bombed when it first came out. Critics didn't have much to say good about it but they were all sooooo wrong. Black people loved their reflection in it, white people loved the music (Cissy Houston was in it for crying out loud) and others though it was just a good ride for a familiar story. I think the problem was that they were trying to compare it to the Judy Garland version but sometimes you have to just take a movie as a stand alone. Maybe in this case it was closer to the book version (I've heard that but have never actually read The Wizard of Oz so I can say). Either way it's not Judy's version, it's not the book. It's black culture telling a story with black entertainers, black music and black actors and in the 70's that was a very big deal.

While I love parts of this movie, it is actually derived from the Broadway musical, not the 1939 film. Stephanie Mills is the original Dorothy of The Wiz, and a far superior singer. Plus, being 17 when she got the role, she played a teenager as was depicted in the book series and original MGM film. For me. Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russel own this movie .

Charlie Smalls wrote most of the music. Luther Vandross wrote Everybody Rejoice. Also, Quincy Jones and Ashford and Simpson.

The better singer for the Dorothy lead was Stephanie Mills who would murdered Diana Ross. She was in the Broadway and she was way younger than 34 year old Diana Ross. Don't believe me listen to Home by both these singers. Ross is just a crossover whisper singer. Mills would have killed it.
