CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Evillene (Mabel King) sings "No Bad News" while her henchmen dance.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Sidney Lumet's The Wiz is the film version of the popular Broadway musical that retells the events of L. Frank Baum's classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz through the eyes of a young African-American kindergarten teacher who's "never been below 125th Street." Leaving a large family dinner to chase her dog into a snowstorm, Dorothy (Diana Ross) is swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the land of Oz -- which looks suspiciously like a skewed version of the run-down Manhattan of the late '70s. Landing on top of the Wicked Witch of the East, the puzzled Dorothy is greeted by munchkins who peel themselves from a graffiti mural and sing to her about the Wiz (Richard Pryor), a powerful wizard living in Emerald City who can help her get home. On her journey down the yellow brick road, she encounters a garbage-stuffed scarecrow (Michael Jackson) in a junkyard, a broken-down tin man (Nipsey Russell) caught in the decay of an old amusement park, and a cowardly lion (Ted Ross) posing as a stone statue outside a museum. The quartet tangles with a subway station that comes to life, a poppy den, and a gaggle of motorcycle henchman on their way to the Wiz -- who orders them to kill the Wicked Witch of the West (a sweatshop tyrant) before he will grant them their wishes. The Wiz has about double the large-scale production numbers of The Wizard of Oz (1939), with songs written and composed by Charlie Smalls.

Occasionally yes. The last time there was a standout villain number was Evil Like Me in Descendants. In fact, Kristin Chenoweth and Dove Cameron are reuniting for Hairspray LIVE this December where they will play the Von Tussles from some of the creative team behind the Wiz Live on NBC.

@@full-timeanimeman4341 To me, this scene alludes to American slavery. In the beginning, the crows and others came into the shop in chains and all the workers were forced to wear masks, kinda like how African natives were forced to assume a different culture when brought to America. The sweatshop is a metaphorical, industrialized cotton field! The workers are forced to sing and dance while working and then some actually pass out right before Evilene cracks out the whip! Even the choreography at the end showed the workers getting on their knees, pleading for mercy to a cadence of GOSPEL music, which I interpret as symbolically illustrating the enslavement and colonization by way of Christianity! This is DEEP!

anjelheaven@(Colorism aside) I think it shows how the pressure and abusive disrespect black women in amerKKKa face every day alone, (black males dancing around acting like a fool) it begins to take a toll not only on her physical health but mental health and attitude. She's tired of bad news, was born in bad news and she becomes bad news by internalizing it thus becoming this gross disfigured monster. Lena, (colorism aside) represent the black woman when she begins to lighten her load, stop rewarding people who disrespect her, understand she needs to take care of herself first, looks inward for peace instead of outwards, find out what self-respect means, feels safe and secure, she becomes beautiful, inter-galactic and soulful...she ascends this ugly world.

NoahHam40 Mabel really had talent, it's sad, she had a horrible time during her last 10 years she was alive, she lost her only child and because she suffered from diabetes, she ended up losing both her legs and a arm, I think before she died she suffered so much that it seem she simply gave up on life. And just like The Wiz, from the show What's Happening, only three of the main characters are still alive today, Dwayne, Roger and Dee, everyone else has passed.

@@thechristianteen9167 Unfortunately 😔 I think it’s messed up too because if we’re going by year of birth, the only deaths that make sense are Nipsey Russell (Tin Man) who was born in 1917 and Lena Horne was born in 1922. They wouldn’t be here anyway, but everyone else Ted Ross, Richard Pryor, and poor Michael should still be alive today. Richard Pryor would be 84, and Ted Ross would be 85. That’s pushing it but definitely possible. Michael would only be 66.

I used to love this scene as a child because of the song and dancing. But now as a grown adult, age 36, this scene as well as the many others with their songs are very telling for my Black American culture. It isn't just simply a fantasy story of wanting to be the best and to escape like in the The Wizard of Oz. The Wiz writers definitely incorporated powerful messages about our Black American culture and History. I love it from my childhood memories but I love it much more because I understand now through experience and growth what they were explaining to us in the movie. Thank you so much to the play as well as movie writers and cast and crew. Date Stamp: 26dec20.

It’s amazing how entertaining a movie over 40 years old is more entertaining than the crap they give us now. People don’t think how old movies, and songs are from this era because these times are missed. The 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. Teens now wish they could have experienced it because they give decade themed parties trying to live the reality of it, but those days are gone. I wish they could come back!

This is basiclly the best song but Ease On Down the Road is in between 1st and 2nd place. But its really in 2nd place because I really love the song No Bad News. But I also like You Cant Win by Michael Jackson. But the song is You Cant Win is in 3rd place for me. But I think that Slide Some Oil To Me will probably not be worst than Home. Even though Home actually is serious and not funny. Its something my brother hates very much. Dont know how to convince my brother into liking it but its just him. Anyways these are my rankings for the songs: Home: 4th place. I dont know why but it is kinda boring for me. And serious. You Cant Win: 3rd or 2nd. Im more of a 2nd place person for this. Slide Some Oil To Me: 5th. I kinda hate this song a lot. Ease On Down The Road: 1st or 2nd. Its not exactly 1st but I pick 1 1/2. No Bad News: 1st. Its so intresting how Mabel King uses her voice. Reminds me of Louie Armstrong singing La Vie En Rose! I have one more song I forgot the name but it has something to do with motorcyle monkeys or the graffiti munchkins. Ah ha!! Got it! The graffiti munchkins! The song they sing is so wonderful and I can never stop singing it but it cant beat No Bad News. In my opinion in ranking its 3rd. I dont know why. Its not as good as No Bad News or You Cant Win. Ok im off to do a Wizard of Oz!!!

787 people were brought bad news. On a side note R.I.P. Mabel King (1932-1999). Some trivia: In the scene where she calls the Flying Monkeys that happens a few minutes after this scene. When the leader Cheetah speaks he says to her "What's Happening!!" When I got older I realized was that breaking the fourth wall there? Because Mabel King starred as Mabel 'Mama' Thomas in the famous 1970's sitcom What's Happening!! I wonder if Harry Madsen the actor who played Cheetah improvised that or if that was really in the script.
