What's good everybody, it's treese, and despite having a lot of potential in the global market, the WNBA fails to reach its' promise year after year. Several narratives surrounding the league need to be suppressed, and certain WNBA players must understand the reality of their league. This video is not at all intended to incite hatred amongst basketball fans towards the WNBA, rather an objective view on some controversies surrounding the WNBA and what the league as a whole can do to improve.

I just want to put this out there: DON'T hate on the WNBA for no reason-- you can criticize statements at your will but there is NO room for unnecessary hatred in this world during a time like this. I enjoy watching women's basketball and the WNBA has a lot of potential, but in order to move forward, I believe that certain players and fans need a reality check. NO HATRED IS TOLERATED! Let's discuss how to make the WNBA a more entertaining product.

What the WNBA players don't understand is who is the market. Look at who are the fans of profitable Women sport's Women's tennis? Women UFC women's pro boxing? women's Volleyball? It's men because the great majority of men don't watch sports. Everything is about promoting for girls to watch the game. It's like minor league baseball saying they have the same attraction as the majors. The only thing that have is being a local team. It's about loyalty to a team more then being a world start. They want don't have the brand of the NBA being a world wide produce. They are local starts to niche fans. One of the highest respect is when you you say a jersey number and people knows the player. The number is better then the name. Number 23 and i don't have to tell anyone who knows basketball who I talking around the world. They got the heads so stuck up an Ideology they don't care about the fans.

The problem with the talent is concerning, but basketball is more popular among men, so its natural that from a smaller pool of talent there is a worse average. Also, most of them do not earn 6 figures. They earn much less than that (yearly). But still, they earn proportionally to what they generate or whatever they achieve through collective bargaining.

The MLS was actually in a similar situation in the early 2000s. They were losing revenue, teams were folding, etc. But they made changes to the style of play, made smaller soccer specific stadiums they looked full with only 20,000 fans attending and now the league is set to surpass hockey and baseball. Here’s to a brighter and better future for women’s basketball.
@riffbw
@riffbw 11 ай бұрын
You summed it up perfectly. The attitude from within the league is hostile and the players are driving away fans. Your average women's basketball fan understands the differences between men's and women's games. The skill disparity between the best and worst player on the court is much smaller in the women's game (same for soccer as well). I used to love the women's game because it was more team and passing oriented rather than being iso-ball and showing off 1v1 skills. It was entertaining because it was different and more pure. There are three key things the women need to do to fix their league. 1. Stop trying to be the men. Stop trying to compare your product with theirs. It will always be inferior if your goal is to emulate the men and inferior products only sell well if they and much cheaper. Highlight what makes your league special and sell your product to fans. 2. Take steps to becoming financially viable. Operating at a loss is bad business and you'll never see more money. Lower your salaries across the board. Lower ticket prices to a point where you can fill a stadium. 400 tickets at $50 is worse than 1000 tickets at $30. Butts in seats builds the fan base and cheaper tickets fills more seats. Be the cheap entertainment option. 3. OUTREACH!!! This is arguably the most important. Host community events, have meet and greets, and be available. These players are not NBA stars getting mobbed wherever they go. They are minor celebrities that need to endear themselves to fans. Be available. Meet with kids. Make friends with people that can help support your salary. Stop being egotistical wannabe NBAers and know your place. I make comparisons, but women's pro soccer and indoor men's soccer have to do these things. MLS went through this phase to get off the ground. Minor League levels have to do all this. Nobody goes to minor league baseball because it's the best product. They go because it's cheap, it's local, and they have a chance to meet players. The WNBA should not longer be an upstart league, but they've never really gotten the basics down to grow past that. And since the league operates at a loss and survives on NBA assistance, filling a stadium is a better long term investment than maximizing ticket revenue today. If you can get 10k people to come and are making less, you've got 10k people exposed and more likely to show up again. PS. If they want a 50% revenue share for salaries, wouldn't they owe the league money since the league operates at a loss?
@handsomeX
@handsomeX 6 ай бұрын
Exactly. It's a process. It took decades to build pro sports at the men's level. Guys had to work during the off-season in order to supplement their income. It took took 40 plus years, and even longer in baseball, in order for the players to live VERY well from the sport. They also went through a myriad of rule changes and adjustments in order to improve the product, which they continue to do today. U can't be stagnant and expect a business to grow.

I keep myself 18, 10k for maintaining it, 8k for my own profit, and 2k for salary. The ratio is 2 to 20 aka 10% salary. But if my restaurant were to earn me 100k per month, I would've taken myself 60k, 10k for the restaurant, and 50k for myself. Then my staff would've got a salary of 40k and that's is 40 / 100 aka 40% ratio. That is why they do not have neither good salary or good ratio. They generate small amount of money, so they get lesser part of it, businessmen are not interested in earning $1, they always have their minimum expected income, and if that ain't happening, you get lesser salaries

Just watching this vs UConn women or the like, it seems that the WNBA are playing a lot of 4s and 5s out of position at the same time fundamentals like passing to create spacing as well as taking shots while in control and/or moving towards or squaring to the basket are not common. Another thing to consider would be athletic primes of women may be a few years younger than men - maybe declining by age 28-30 for women instead of 30-32 for men. What do you peeps think ??

My dad used to say, never needlessly make an enemy, but the WNBA seems to have a habit of doing so. The WNBA forgets every man has a mother, often has sisters, often has women he loves. We DO watch women's sports -- take tennis, for example. So it's not like men can't be persuaded to watch women's sports. However, it does need to be more entertaining and marketed with players who don't run their mouth constantly about pay equity, etc. and so on. The vast majority of the human race is poor and most of us will never play sports for a living. These women seem to forget that a lot.

One of the saddest aspects of Kobe's and Gigi's tragic passing earlier this year is that it robbed the WNBA of a future superstar and it deprived the world of being able to see Kobe begin his second career as a WNBA coach and inevitably coach his daughter to multiple WNBA championships. A lot of us have never watched a WNBA game before, but who wouldn't pay good money to see Gigi hit fadeaways and play like a Kobe-clone with the Black Mamba himself coaching her on the sidelines. The WNBA CBA has a clause where players would make 50% of the revenue once the revenue reaches a certain point. The league is nowhere near that revenue mark. If the players made 50% of too low of a number, like you said, you wouldn’t be able to pay coaches, pay for flights, pay janitors, etc. If the players got what they want, their league would die. The owners have been losing money every year for 25 years and the players are asking for raises and private flights. NBA players in the 60s worked day jobs while they were building the NBA and it still almost failed multiple times. If the NBA didn’t stipend the WNBA, the league already wouldn’t exist. The players really think they deserve more money?? They’re lucky they still have a league and stadiums to play in. The level of entitlement is actually absurd.

Chances are the employees at your company actually do get collectively paid more than half of total revenue, but that's because you're talking about all the employees. What WNBA players are asking for is the equivalent of all the McDonald's general managers demanding to be paid half of all McDonald's revenue because they're running the stores, which is simply absurd. If WNBA players were worth being paid the kind of money they want, they'd either have cultivated a profitable league via their performance, which they can't do, or they'd go try out and get signed on an NBA team, which they also can't do. And yes, any NBA team that had a woman try out and show enough talent to make the team would sign her. The fact is that there's not a single woman in existence who has that talent and there never will be.
@alexandereisenbruck672
@alexandereisenbruck672 3 жыл бұрын
@@johnwatsoniv384 the only reason for men get paid so much, as much as 50% of revenue is because the revenue is high enough, so the teams, orgs and league can afford it, also competition is high enough so money talks when it comes to contracts and so on. When it comes to woman and their league, its being donated money into instead of generating its own. Its not about splitting profits, its something like asking your boss to raise your salary, pay you out of his own pockets while staying in red numbers. That shit is just absurd. If you have no profits, you have no revenue, they yiu get paid shit. This feminism shit that's around us is just absurd.. They do get to play game they love.. Enjoy their live.. And make milions of $ in proces (their low six figure deal in $ would set them for life in my country if they keep that contract for few years running, for example, so this bitching someone makes more just pisses me off.). And pisses me even more when there's visible gap and no discusión about whos better. Like.. Idk what sport it was yif basketball or football, but fucking national team (winners of worlds) ot beaten by high school team full of teenage boys that literally make a peanuts, how the duck they can ask for equal.. Shouldn't then high school hoys with higher skill level make even more than them? My logic tells me they should.. Because people should be paid for their skills and what they do, not dor their gender.) The mens case is, there are billions generated, so the teams don't care if they or the players get it, if it means their star players stay with them and sign contracts.

The women's soccer league has already made a joke of themselves in front of the country when their wage inequality lawsuit was thrown out of court with extreme prejudice when it was discovered that they were already being paid more, over all compared to men's Soccer league in guaranteed salary and benefits. Men on the other hand were only earning commission per game with bonus. So what was the court circus about? They wanted to amend their contract to include commission and bonuses per game without removing the guaranteed salary and benefits with non of the drawbacks from the men's contract.....very greedy and frivolous lawsuit. A shameless act by the neo feminism activists.

Two years on and it's still an issue. As some people have pointed out, if the WNBA were to take on a true 50% cut of profit share, each player would currently be paying the league around $20k. They lack the combination of skill level and physical tools necessary for them to compete with the NBA in regards to entertainment. The women's ball is smaller and lighter and you'll see the women pulling off high skill dribble moves, but the defender never bites. Why? Simply, the threat of the dribble move is empty bc they aren't going to be able to generate the force to make that one-handed push pass, the defender is already in front of the ball bc they lack the explosiveness and there is zero chance the ball handler was going to try to bully through the defender. So the ball handler was styling on herself as the other 9 players on the floor all knew she was trying to fake the drive or pass so she could gather and take a stand-still jumper. The only reliable threat a lot of womens players possess. Lowering the hoop wouldn't do much to help the situation bc they lack the strength necessary to power through the contact. One of the first differences I see when watching the WNBA when compared to the NBA is that you can clearly see the effort of the women when they take long jumpers and take shots close to the rim. Think about it like this, guys like Steph Curry and Damian Lillard can take half court shots with the same shooting motion as they take at the 3pt line. A lot of the womens 3pt shots look like a lot of men do when they take half court shots. The motion isn't fluid or dynamic, they come down off balance typically with all their weight on their lead leg. We've already seen the best women team in the world lose to a good boys high school team in soccer. The result would be the same for the WNBA. The real shame is the push the NBA was giving the WNBA did nothing but piss the women off. It has to be frustrating for the men to know how much they prop up the WNBA and how they get attacked any time they try to do something to make the WNBA more self-sufficient. At this point the best thing the WNBA could do is give tickets away for free and bank on making more money back from concessions. I'd also suggest not limiting the number of alcoholic drinks a person can have as is done in most sports these days. There are a lot of sports fans that prefer the college game to the pros bc of the environment of the games. They can't compete in terms of the quality of product so maybe they should try marketing the passion for the product over the quality, ala college sports.

There's one aspect of the women's game that is rarely if ever mentioned - explosiveness. 95% of the players lumber around, are incredibly uncoordinated, and move at about 70% of the speed of male players (NBA or otherwise). It's the same with women's wrestling, soccer, and hockey. There has never, ever been a moment in the WNBA where a player exhibited a "WOW" moment of athleticism. Dunking or not, that is the reason I find it so deeply uninteresting.

it is a really good thing that you put some women's reaction, because one of the most mysogenistic thing is to expect from a women to watch women's sport. Sport has never been about what you can do with your own means, it has always been about excellence, not men excellence, not women excellence, just excellence, and that is why most of women sports are not popular. The violin 🎻 gets smaller when they do compare what they do to their NBA counterparts as why that should be getting more. Skylar’s dig into Harrison Barnes is a prime example. She compared her résumé to his in a dismissive way, while complaining why she should get more because of it; she’s a 4-time All-Star & leading scorer on a team that hasn’t had a winning season since drafting her. Barnes - while not an All-Star, was a key piece of the Warriors championship team in 2015 & their record-setting 73-win regular season in 2016; after the KD trade, Harrison became the Mavs leading scoring option. By the time Diggins made that comparison in 2019, neither Dallas team had much to brag about. Was Diggins saying she’s as good as Barnes despite never winning a title like he did, or that she needs to be paid as much as a player like Barnes got paid despite him never being an All-Star??
@aztn19

@Tevin Grouse it’s not that they don’t deserve a pay raise, it’s how are they going to get such a raise when their league can’t afford it? Even the $500K minimum you suggest is currently untenable to pay every player. The WNBA barely makes $80M/yr; no way they can give $72M to 144 players across their 12 teams & still remain financial solvent.

Somehow, even the BEST women college players find a way to play like crap in the WNBA. I do not know how it is possible! Maybe these women should not go home until they can make 20 in a row with no defense under the basket. No professional should miss these shots very often. There is no reason to work the ball in if you are going to miss the shot. There are even a few high-school players that are going to make these WNBA women look sad when they get there.

It's tough to have a civil discussion when the WNBA players don't care to be civil or realistic about this particular conversation. When Hall of Famers like Shaq and McGrady are being shut down for suggesting options to make the WNBA more entertaining then you have a player/WNBA problem and not a viewer/fan problem. These women want more money and revenue sharing but are unwilling to make any concessions or changes to their game because of their ego's and that's why their league doesn't have an excess of revenue to share.
