I feel like this is the thing with the loud house. I'm not saying that the loud house is a bad show, I just don't like it, the jokes aren't that good, and the characters can be rather obnoxious at times. I think a reason why people like that show is only because it has a diverse cast. Then take for example Craig of the creek, well yes POC is technically a selling point the show has so many other things holding it, the characters are enjoyable, the world they live in feels like something you too would have loved to play in as a child, the dialogue is witty, and fart jokes are to a minimal.

Here's a tip; a person who cares about diversity wouldn't talk about it as if they came up with the idea of having a diverse cast of ANYTHING. They wouldn't advertise themselves FIRST and 'how diverse' everything is and leave out what makes the characters UNIQUE as their own person rather than acting as if ONE singular character represent the whole of culture where people are still individuals while still holding to their culture. They also won't act as if said minorities owe them blow jobs for having one Black character or just race bending someone else. If someone acts like you owe them ANYTHING for shit tier work, RUN. I think people don't realise the reign of terror Riley instated on Tumblr in those days. It was actually so scary, like you lived in complete fear of being doxxed or bullied. The absolute adamantine power of influence they had was crazy and their legion of fans and supporters were massive. Riley went unquestioned and unchallenged for ages. I think the appeal was that they were not "pc" and initially started out as a somewhat anti-sj sjw if that makes any sense? They said things people were "too afraid to say" and that won them a lot of respect. They also took advantage of the rampant anti-blackness that was in many marginalised communities on Tumblr especially on Art Tumblr and positioned themselves as a liberator and authority. Riley had a lot of issues with internalised homophobia, anti-blackness, extreme xenophobia and (trans) misogyny/misogynoir and when called out they would (and I hate myself for saying this) literally pull out the race/queer card and call out their cronies to cyberbully and run people off the platform and act as a victim and constantly use mental health and trauma as a shield while ironically using other people's trauma against them. You literally had to pray that your post never caught their attention or you were done for. The era of ironic racism and toxic trolling in that era of the internet created the monster that Riley was because before them no one really had the guts to actually go against these trolls only to ironically become the people who they claimed to hate. Unfortunately after Riley's demise it created a vacuum for others to take their place and that's why Tumblr is the hellhole it is today. Riley was just an insecure, unfulfilled, glorified hotep who was bullied for being a nerd in high school and everyone should feel sorry for them. Wow the way they used to BEG for money too! Preach. Just picked it up again yesterday. It's definitely incredibly funny, I totally forgot how most Sims you diagnose will just immediately leave your little medicine hut even if you tell them that they have the plague. Like: "Hey dude, you have the plague. Don't worry, I can help you and make sure that you won't infect anyone, please follow me to this-" "Bye!" EDIT: BTW it's still so goddamn surreal that the skin textures and the models look better than the ones in TS3. Like I know that the game released two years later than TS3 but like...idk maybe the models in your cool mainline game should be better than the one in your little medieval-AU side-game

About her rant. No, when you make a game you don't jump straight to coding, but the problem is that her Arkh project had nothing besides fanart, she had no ideas for the game itself, how it was all going to work, and what the story would be. She's a completely delusional person who lives in a fantasy world. You can see by the way she describes her imaginary life that she's very sheltered or very young: she lives in a mansion, all by herself (the fact she needed to say this makes me believe she lives with her parents), with high ceilings, a pool, a jacuzzi... Shes a software dev, got a job just a few weeks ago, but she also goes to school, and she also has a her own company with lots of clients. She works from home (many many years pre-pandemic, this was extremely rare) and lives 5 minutes away from her job. It's like a child dreaming about the future.

That whole "you are native american with some irreverent black ancestry" at 11:48 just shows how uneducated riley is, as it is possible for a black Native American to have like 0 Native American ancestry in them and still be Native American. If you're confused let me explain, Once slavery was abolished Native Americans/tribes who owned slaves were told by the government to make their slaves part of their tribes. I know their was a small portion of time where the Native Americans kinda kicked them out of their tribes, but they got it back at the end of the day.
@Armyless4 жыл бұрын
For anyone curious, looking up Freedmen of ___ Tribe (I know the Cherokee and Choctaw??? are the easiest to find.) There are likely more, but the tribes that had slaves were often parts of the 5 Civilized Tribes (aka they didn't attack white people lmao) and obviously not all tribes (less likely, the further west you get) had slaves. But yes, it's absolutely possible to be native with no "native blood", and is 100% step one in why "native blood" is a irrelevant and useless label and concept.

Yup, that feeling of being like "oh, hey, that person is like me" lasts for a moment. If you don't actually do anything interesting with it or tell a good story, then that's all it's gonna be: a neat moment in an otherwise underwhelming/naff bit of media. Marketing things that way can also kill buzz for stuff too. An example I bring up is Birds of Prey, easily one of my favourite comic book flicks of the last decade. It was fun, bombastic, stylish, totally embracing it being a film based on a comic, and Ewan McGregor looked like he was having a blast as Black Mask. I maintain that this film did poorly largely because of how badly it was marketed and a whole load of other Twitter bull that meant that they wouldn't just let the quality of the movie speak for itself.
@plague_doctor02373 жыл бұрын
Exactly, and it feels baity, because when things are marketed only for being diverse, it feels to me like the people making those projects don't actually care about the issues they're talking about and instead make said projects only to be praised for being "woke" (God I hate this word, but it's the only one that can explain the concept well). This is something called performative activism, people exploiting minorities to gain praise.

I would never understand this mentality of "I'll take what I can get" when it comes to representation, this whole thing had so many red flags that even when at times it was obviously sketchy... people that wanted representation still believed it. I think even more so in early tumblr years where a lot of them were young teenagers or young adults that didn't know better, as to why it was so easy to scam tumblr. As a mostly gay person, at times I find it cool to be represented in media especially when is subtle, but when someone makes a character that their whole trait is that they are gay... that's pretty bad, not to mention trying to have this token character so people talk about it. It's similar in this case, the game was just the fact that there was black people, gay people, etc but nothing else.
@rainbow92994 жыл бұрын
I feel this but can kinda understand why When I first realized I was non-binary (a few years ago so there wasn't a lot of places to go for representation) I looked for any cartoon characters that I could relate to and understand. I landed on a show that was on the level of family guy who had a non-binary character and I kinda idolized them. Now I realize it was a gag character meant to be the butt of jokes and not to be a relatable one. So like you said its most likely teens/young adults just looking for anything and not understanding what's considered "good" rep
@dundandon4 жыл бұрын
@@rainbow9299 Long time ago anything that wasn't straight was pretty much a gag in shows, now since things have changed so it has the media but that could either be good or bad depending who you ask. Personally I see it as a bit more to the bad side, since corporations make characters like that to attract people to their thing, often as a marketing tool and not really caring that much. In the other side you have teens/young adults that draw nothing but black and gay characters that bitch about not being represented or just attack other people for the dumbest of reasons, sometimes changing a white character to black to "improve it". Rambling aside, is incredibly rare to have some sort of representation done correctly without having so much pandering or done without monetary intentions.

Riley is one of those things where, because they were from that period in my life where I was learning about social justice related things, but consequently became really, *really* panicked over being a good ally, upon encountering shitstorms like her I would just try to grit my teeth and smile, and tell myself, "Nothing is wrong. They're not psychotic and disturbed and conspicuously vague about what they do with money. You're just being oversensitive, you just don't *get it* , stop questioning things." And now I can only look back and think, "Yeah, no...shit was always fucked up."

"We're not living on a golden age of diverse media" *Hades being in every GOTY list* : Am I a Joke to you? We might not be there yet, but in 2012 it'd be impossible to believe things like Hades, Celeste, She-ra or even Call of Duty adding NB identities to a AAA videogame would happen.

Felt like COD did it to blatantly disguise the Red Scare propaganda that was Cold War, also to veer away from the controversy featuring Yuri Bezmenov would bring.

Omg ... I followed this project and Riley back in 2012 (I followed Riley for years before that too) and I was so impressionable and mentally vulnerable at the time (mid-teens to early 20s with a bunch of then-undiagnosed mental illnesses) that for some reason I fell for everything they said and become totally brainwashed. I don't remember all the stuff they said about other Black people but mostly about white and Asian people (I'm white and Asian) and it led me to hate myself and genuinely hate other white and Asian people which looking back I'm so disgusted with myself and embarrassed at some of the things I said on my own now-deleted tumblr blog that I'm honestly haunted with it every day that someone will find screenshots and still think I'm that horrible person. I was hooked in with them supposedly standing for minorities and being strongly against racism, and I'm still strongly against racism but now I see it wasn't really about racism for them and just their ego and I feel terrible that I replicated some of their behavior because that's what I thought anti-racism was. Also I likely donated to the project back then (when I barely had any money of my own) because of Riley's guilt-tripping. Sorry for the long comment but this brought up a lot of traumatic memories for me haha.

Some aditional memories: I dont know if it was because of who i was following/our ages at the time, but people were HYPE for this thing. People really did believe it had a very high chance of being made, despite the (in retrospect) dismal state of the kickstarter. Im my memories i saw it being pitched as more of a visual novel with rpg elements, which i think had justified having only a few pieces of character art etc for a lot of people. Also not mentioned was the drama where it turned out that a dress one of the characters was wearing was a stolen design from an actual designer. Odly enough i remember this as a turning point in the general perception of the game. In modern times we are comarativly spoiled for representation, even though it still isnt perfect. At the time a lot of people were dreaming of better representation, and trying to work towards making it themselves. Which is why i think it seemed to make sense for something like this to be made, and why a lot of people didnt really question what was, in retrospect, a really shaky kickstarter campaign...

Okay so I'm not the only one who saw a bit of that, yeah, it was very much the author doing a kind of D/S dynamic and basically just wanting to do an anime romance with no indication of any larger conflict that might power an RPG.

@@derekmensch3601 the sad part is that theyre still doing this, just constantly accusing people and dropping them the second some bad news happen without waiting for further evidence or sources. and trying to remind them that the victim might not always be the victim just makes you into a target in itself. of course you should stand by victims and listen to them, but alas i think you should also give the other person a chance to, you know, defend themselves maybe? nah
