The Wolf Of Wall Street (2014) "Was All This Legal?"

What makes this film the best of the last 5 years is that it never ever slows down. Just three hours of constant ridiculousness.

I've always had a soft spot for characters that break the fourth wall to address the viewer. Movies like this, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Wayne's World, and Fight Club. You create a bond with the character, it's as if he/she trust ONLY YOU with this vital information. Rather than just being a spectator, you're part of the action.

+maxwell10206 Artificially inflating stock prices by making his friends or "ratholes" buy lots of stock in the company. This would make the price of stock in the usually worthless company rise, then he would sell his stock to members of the public while the price is high. This usually resulted in investors losing A LOT of money.

The pump and dump. His "ratholes", or front men, would buy large amounts of the initial public offering (IPO) of a penny stock and he guaranteed them a nice large return, then his sales floor would cold call the common public to buy shares of this "promising and uprising" company. The cold call sales persuaded a lot people to buy shares, which artificially inflated the share price. Once the share price "capped off" or slowed down at the highest price possible , he instructed his ratholes (front men) to sell. The ratholes got their promised percent return, and he pocketed about 50% commission, which was multiple millions.
@CarlosAguilar-dj4ph8 жыл бұрын

"Pump and dump" requires you to know exactly when to get in and when to get out. You're not going to know that unless you're in on the con.
@jlogan22286 жыл бұрын
Yea pump an dump in.another sense would be like betting on horse races where you have a set horse that will win every time and you share this with your rsthole friends so they put up big bucks and maybe make some initial small profit. Your betting house will then spread the word on the streets that the hot tip is that that horse is lookibg the best to win so they all automatically will bet on him which again artificially inflates his odds as the favorite. When the horses odds are like 10-1 thats when the rathole sells in the form of the horse loses and while the initial betters may only lose a small amount bc the odds were so high thattheres no point in betting big in his favor, you and your rathole friends.made 10 times your bet back

I really feel that, from a cinematic and educational perspective, he finished his explanation. Let's say you're a viewer who doesn't understand the intricacies of stock market scams. You've no clue how a pump and dump works, or you've never even heard the term. Now up to this point, the movie was pretty clear how Jordan was scamming his customers. We heard what Aerotyne International really was, saw their headquarters (just a shack), and then heard how Jordan pitched the sale and how he completely misled that customer on what the stock was. And we also got a pretty clear explanation of how Jordan took that to the next level by targeting the wealthiest people, earning their trust by pitching well known stocks, and then selling them worthless penny stocks like Aerotyne once that trust was earned. AND we got an understanding of how Jordan and his firm benefited, first from the broker's exposition in the restaurant about commissions and later from the Investor Center manager's explanation that penny stocks paid a 50% commission. Up to this point, how Jordan is scamming his customers, how it hurts them, and how the scams make him so much money is clear to the viewer even if the viewer knows little to nothing about the stock market. Here, however, it's different. A non-financially savvy viewer will be scratching their heads wondering what's illegal about this. Even if they've never heard of an IPO somehow, they got a simple definition right there from Jordan and it's as far away from a scam as possible. By this point in the film, we know that the company he's taking public is Steve Madden, which is a real company that's still in business today (not only do I remember the exact commercials Jordan shows in the film, there are Steve Madden stores in my city). So we have Stratton Oakmont taking a well known shoe retailer public, as is common and normal. What's the problem? If you don't know about pump and dump schemes, then all you know is that it's illegal because everyone's dancing and cheering and yelling, everyone's making money, and because Jordan straight out tells you, but you have no idea how. This far from ruins the film, but I feel that this is a pretty big oversight considering not only how thorough the film was in making sure you understood what was going on up to this point, but how much everything that happens from here on out is the result of the pump and dump scam.

Then when he gets a bunch of people to buy this stock until it eventually reaches a peak price, he tells his employees to sell all of their shares, which in turn both makes them money on the stock AND allows them to pocket the 50% commission? Some do drugs and end up selling millions of albums, or found a multi-million (even billion) company. Most end in a cold ditch with a needle attached to the vein (or a crack pipe).

The secret is: you have to have a vision. That doesn't just involve getting more dope (duh).

While Matthew McConaughey is absolutely excellent and captivating in Dallas Buyers Club, Leo deserved the award more in my opinion, it’s simply because out of all the male performances that were nominated, he was the one who left he biggest impact with me and was the most entertaining and memorable. The Oscars has a really dumb bias against lighthearted and comedic films vs dark and dramatic movies.

The only problem with this movie is it doesn't show the other side. It doesn't show the lives Jordan Belfort ruined. There were literally thousands of people who lost their live savings, their homes, marriages in divorce, retirements that were wiped out.
