(THIS IS A COMBINATION OF MY TWO VIDEOS ON THE NEW ORDER AND THE OLD BLOOD)
In this video I talk about two of my favourite FPS games of all time, Wolfenstein The New Order and Wolfenstein The Old Blood. These two games are criminally underrated, and nobody realises how much of an impact they had on the FPS genre.

I actually enjoyed both of those, I have an embarrassing amount of hours in Youngblood lol. Wolf 2 is so much fun though, they all are even Youngblood, I just turn of dialog volume for that game and I’m good to go, I like the weapon upgrade systems that Youngblood ha, it seems somewhat pointless with how many mods that aren’t at all useful, idk it’s a good looking game and the movement is a chefs kiss for Youngblood, lol I’m probably - of 5 people that still boot it up here and there.

For real, this is one of the few games to get me in the feelings. I have a razor thin attention span and have no use for story in a game, but new order gives me chills every time I might be biased because it's the first one I played, but Youngblood is fun as hell. Yes it has its issues, but it looks great, has great gunplay, and is a total power trip. It plays how the crysis games should have

51:52 Jäger isn't actually screwing with BJ when he asks him if he's a frankfurter. The sausage is named after an actual city in Germany called Frankfurt (sausage actually means "Wurst" in German), whose citizens are also commonly called Frankfurter. He's simply asking if BJ is from that city. This is why Jäger cracks up and lets him go when BJ makes the hot dog joke, he gets the association.

I was about 10 when i first played this game. I had "tactically acquired" it over the internet because i wouldve never been allowed to play it otherwise. I chose to save fergus over wyatt, and man, his screams nearly made me puke my fucking guts up. The character of BJ just resonated within me, and i subconsciously tried to emulate him in my behaviour. Needless to say, that lead to alot of fights with bullies at school, and subsequently a losing battle against the schools themselves. One of the greatest games ive ever played, and it will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Blazko is my favorite character in all of fiction, even above other greats like guts. His struggle truly brutal, relatable, and touching. His actions in this story and the next inspired me to improve in my own life and will forever remember it for such. The phrase "ignore the pain, you ain't dead, so keep moving" from Wolfenstein 2 rings through my head anytime I'm faced with true hardship in life. I know people have issues with that game, many justified, but it also contains some the greatest moments in all of art.

@TheRedKing247

There's loads wrong with it. The biggest problem is that the pacing of the game is just absolutely fucked. This is in terms of both story and gameplay. For story you have way, way too many cutscenes. Some of them can be really good and there are some good moments in the game, but often times these moments are overshadowed by either scenes with really jagged and/or hurried execution, interspersed with moments of some of the most unfunny crass humor I've ever heard - there's a moment where Anya and BJ are having a serious moment where Super Spesh comes out of the toilet for a literal toilet humor joke that just ruins the scene in a a way that is exemplary of the rest of the game. On the other hand while the core gameplay is okay despite some poor balancing of the weapons and ammo drops, there's just a few things that completely fuck it up on the bigger scale. The biggest one imo is just the sheer number of commanders in the game. In TNO they were a nice little change of pace sprinkled here and there that made them refreshing and gave a reason to sneak around rather than just going full action (though you still could if you wanted). In TNC they're fucking EVERYWHERE. There are literally times where you have them room after room. As a result it becomes incredibly tedious to fight them where you're either constantly sneaking around maps that were often times clearly not designed to be snuck around in, or you get tired of that and go balls to the wall only to face shitloads of bullet spongy enemies that endlessly respawn until you manage to snipe the dude. And you're having to do this constantly. It completely destroys the pacing of combat. In general the level design is all over the place. Some spots are fun and memorable like the fight on the rocket train but most of the level design is just passable at best or just not fun to play around in (often thanks to liberal use of commanders) - which is a complete travesty considering how good TNO's level design was. Like at the end of the day TNC isn't like a completely awful game, and there's parts of it to enjoy- it's just compared to TNO and TOB, it fucking sucks balls in pretty much everything other than the moment to moment gameplay which is otherwise the same as before. It just tries to do and be too much and as a result ends up flopping like a fish out of water. Raycevick made a great video about it and said it best comparing it to the ending punk cover of "We're not gonna take it": "It's emphatically over the top, abrasive, and there's moment of it I do love; but the dose of reality it acknowledges is drowned out in a sea of noise that makes the end product fun, but not as special as what came before."

Appreciate the acknowledgement because I was going to say something lol don't wanna be the "atchyually" guy/meme but people don't realize the new order is a direct continuation from the wolfenstien that came out before it (good game, can't remember what's it called and it received mediocre reviews). Pretty sure in that game the nazis get some good tech thus leading to them to have all the crazy stuff we see in New Order Yes, they also stole Jewish tech in the new order but I don't think that was the original thing that gave them a leg up in the prior game. I thought it was some occult shit but I could be wrong. Regardless, the game before directly sets up the new order and the technological advantage which is mildly interesting...i suppose Sounded like you were implying the Germans also had more advanced tech in our reality's WW2 which isn't really true. Except for a few very specific things (V2 rocket prototypes for one). Though their manufacturing was always crap compared to the allies especially once we started bombing their factories daily. They still used horse drawn stuff a lot by 1945, had deteriorating small arms quality in the later years, on top of that they never completed their atomic weapon meaning the allies had a decent technological advantage (and certainly manufacturing ability) throughout the war except for maybe the first few years of German aggression when simply due to them preparing for their invasions

Talking about Halo's two weapon limit (unlike most shooters that let you carry tons of weapons) it reminds me of mods where you can see the weapons on their back. From the 3rd person perspective in another shooter you can see an entire arsenal of weapons from pistols, shotguns, automatic weapons and rocket launchers. It's like they are carrying enough weapons for a small army on their back. It may have been a mod for GTA V now that I think about it.

I always play my games on the hardest difficulty so I can play the game once and get most of the achievements I find the leaning mechanic in these games to be the Saving grace most of the time, especially against hevay and common Nazi It really allows you to use Everything and anything for covor in the new order. When you're in the submarine. I remember going prone and using the nazi's bodies as cover 10/10

Thanks for this retrospective. I am halfway through New Colossus now and it just doesn't feel the same. It has the right tone, but it doesn't have the complexity of level design and world building that New Order had. New Order also had the balls to tackle themes like freneology, human experimentation and the fucking death camps. My mouth hit the floor when they started me up in the death camp level. I was shocked they had the balls to do that. Playing New Order gave me a feeling I hadn't felt since Modern Warfare 1 ironically. Both games nailed the pacing of 2 mini climaxes before the finale with fun but lowstakes levels sprinkled in between. Because not every level was a Michael Bay movie, it allowed the player to breath and appreciate the intense moments even more.

Growing up I was both a history and computer nerd. I didn't get to experience wolf 3D during its peak, but it did get my attention when doing research about old FPS games! The new order is the only game in my entire life that I have pre ordered. Not before, not since. I love this game and I'm glad someone is giving it some attention. Thank you for your content!

14:50 awww, you didn't mention that monologue of the pilot going down :( a real tear-jerker, that one. And I think really cemented the tone that the game was going to deliver on. Of a protagonist that could only listen in on the tragedies happening around them.

I just finished replaying The Old Blood a few days ago and it's honestly nowhere near as good as I remember. It doesn't have as much of an identity crisis as The New Order but I still got the strong feeling that the game didn't know what it was trying to be. On the one hand, ALL of the marketing as well as several core mechanics - such as your decently fast movement, the dual wielding, and the sizeable weapon selection - all pretty much directly tell you that this is an intense, fast-paced, balls-to-the-wall run and gun action game. However, not only does the game open with an extended mandatory stealth sequence after the initial first battle, but - especially on higher difficulties - it very quickly proves that it's actually a slow, often tedious cover shooter where the big difficult arenas consist of picking a good spot and waiting for enemies to come to you. You don't push against enemies - that only leads to death within seconds. Contrary to most other games out there - especially movement-based games - Wolfenstein becomes substantially less fun on higher difficulties because it doesn't let you play in the way that is actually fun. Visually and aesthetically the game is good and its weapons are not boring to use, but the gameplay in the big battles is so tedious and so contrary to everything the game is telling you to expect that I just didn't have very much fun with it. I can appreciate that TNO and TOB were very important for the genre in making the first step towards the heroic resurgence of movement shooters, but it's very obvious that these two games were "the first step".

I think they occupy a nice middle ground between classic and realistic shooters. I've beat it on a controller on I am death incarnate while forfeiting stealth entirely. It's hard and it's not doom some sections force you to in cover and you want to back the fuck up from super soldiers. But its still mostly a run and gun shooter at heart but it's also a hitscan based twitch shooter. Basically the nazis die super quick while you die somewhat less super quick. They have one gun you have two. Areas are full of cover but it's best used merely to keep lines of sight off you rather than being huged more like half life than call of duty (or f.e.a.r with two guns instead of slow mo) . You can tear through nazis fast and that's where the combat works best. Tear though them before they get a chance to hitscan you. You can very much run and gun though normal nazis the challenge is not getting surrounded by lines of sight in you're rampage. Some areas are more open and make you use cover more. But most areas especially in the first half work this way. Basically move around, shoot things as soon as you see them, use cover to limit enemy lines of sight being placed on you. The game still pushed aggression more than cover hugging. You only slowly regen a fifth of your health. The only to heal more and faster was with health packs you had to push for. While it also featured health overcharging and armour which encouraged you to keep pushing for health which in turn encouraged you to be more more aggressive in combat to make use of the decreasing bonus healthpoints. So the safest place to be was in combat duel wield mowing down enemies while hovering up health to overcharge yourself. Its not the glory kill out of doom but its a neat mechanic in itself. Enemies like the shotgun guy and supersolder are spongier enemies admittedly. They want you to hit the weak point which is best done with the sniper ADS or not (they can also be dealt with a couple of peak shot rockets for the shotgun guys). The shotgun guys damage can be avoided just by keeping some distance. While the supersoldiers with force you to covershoot. They can be armour striped after a stun from a weak point shot that makes them very susceptible to being spayed to death. Doing this while unmolested by the nazis is a challenge but going so will get you a minigun. I never really used it but it could mow down swarms if you smarter with movement and remember to aim. I actually think wolfenstein 2 fixed some core gameplay problems. You move faster and duel wielding no longer slows you down. While also adding mixing and matching to duel wielding. Duel wielding had no downsides and basically should of been compulsory. Bullet sponges were removed. The supersoldiers were a faster, far more fragile threat that could be took down in a couple of seconds. The actually spongy big robots and panzerhounds had dodgeable attacks that were not hitscan. And had large weakpoints that could be focused on to clip their weapons or briefly stun them. The level design mostly avoided open spaces without cover. Bjs extra fragility was a mistake though. Do or die difficulty is as hard as new orders I am death incarnate difficulty. It basically means you have to play the game a tier lower difficulty than the previous games difficulty. Didn't know why they changed it the previous games where not known for lacking in difficulty. Overall these are run and gun shooters with combat closer to a more aggressive half life than quake. Although to be fair wolfenstein was never quite an arena shooter like doom, quake, unreal or serious sam. The first game was a hitscan based shooter purely about door fighting rather than circle strafing. Return to castle wolfenstein was as much a military shooter medal of honor game as an arena shooter quake game. It had crosshair bloom, stealth, field based multiplayer ect while maintaining speed, lack of ADS and full arsonal of weapons. Wolfenstein 2009 followed the call of duty formula. But with a full arsonal of weapons and some powerful superpowers that let you massacre battalions. The new saga as previously mentioned is a middle ground between classic and realistic. The series as a whole kind of acted as an elixir of life for the genre. Wolf 3d basically made the genre in a fast, simple form everyone could enjoy. Return to castle wolfenstein resurrected it's own series while making way for the dawning military shooter trend. While the new saga lit the triple A spark in resurrecting the arena shooter and paved the way for doom as it had already done in the past. Basically get good

I enjoyed the video and agree that the Wolfenstein remakes are hugely underrated. Thanks :) But I wanted to comment on some things mentioned early in the video: there were 4 generations of game consoles before Doom came out on PC. I am not sure it's fair to say consoles went mainstream with the [inferred] release of the Xbox. I love Halo (my favourite game) but you are understating the impact Goldeneye and other earlier FPS had on the console market, which was arguably as big.

I preffer the dieselkraftwerk over the lazerkraftwerk due to the crowd control potential and due to the fact that i doesn't melt enemy armor, allowing you to pick it up after blowing someone up to bits. You can also hold down the explode button to make them blow up on impact if that's an issue for you. I also preffer it on the harder dificulties beccause instead of charging a lazer for a while to destroy giant machinery, i can just pop up my diesel grenades and blow them all up on those giant robots. I decided to save fergus in my new game on "i am death incarnate" and oh boy, do i miss my dieselkraftwerk, there's so many moments where it would've been a much better choice then it's lazer variant. Impact grenades are so usefull to deal with the enemies.
