​@@misselder1, the adaptation with Tara Fitzgerald is a disgrace! Everything is twisted, and most characters are miscast. And it was a mistake to turn Percival Glyde into a child molester instead of an illegitimate son, who was therefore not the rightful heir of his father's estate. Being a child molester would not have been anything which would've compelled a father to disinherit his son back then, while being found out to be illegitimate would have had serious consquences for the guy who could not be a baronet legally! And it was a disgusting idea to turn Marian more or less into the killer of Sir Percival! As to the 2018 adaptation, I like it better than the 1982 version, although it's less faithful to the novel. But the production values are much better, and the 1982 version is too stilted and far too slow for my taste - which is very different from the novel itself. Wilkie Collins had no aversions against some action filled episodes 😊 The biggest flaw of all adaptations is unfortunately the total failure to get Count Fosco and his wife right! That's a pity, because the couple are a pair of fascinating villains, and I don't understand why it wasn't possible to get it right!

I watched this a few years ago, and am happy re-watching now in 2021. I still have a huge crush on Marian. I know in the book she was supposed to be dark and ugly, but in this version she is played by a (IMO) gorgeous lady.

I agree, Diana Quick makes a pleasantly attractive woman- but I'm very curious to see the Marian that Wilkie saw in his mind! Mostly because these things are subjective and I wouldn't be surprised if I thought her not ugly!

But I have to concede that the 1982 version gives us a Count Fosco who actually does resemble Wilkie Collins' magnificent villain - even if the actor isn't at all Italian 😉

Like and admire this adaptation; however, at roughly 19:00, this reluctance on the part of the sister to call-off the engagement of marriage, is really to hard-to-swallow. Even in the novel, this is a 'clinker' moment. So, dense, one really, with effort has to delve into the Victorian mind's sensiblities to gather any acceptance of it.

But also Laura's inability to take matters into her own hands and outright break the engagement! She's so passive, allowing Percival to make the final decision- drives me nuts🤯 EDIT oops, I just realized that when you wrote "sister" you meant Laura not Marian. Because I was also annoyed with Marian for sending Hartright away and not putting her foot down with Laura to dump Percival. She knew in her gut she couldn't trust him with Laura!

Laura wanted to act honourably. In this scene I felt it was very clear she believed Glyde would voluntarily release her from her engagement (women who broke their word, broke an engagement, without 'good reason', were considered 'inconstant'.)

stanochocki, yes, I remember that I was furious when I read the novel for the first time! How could these women be so stupid?? But we should remember that the times were different back then. Laura wasn't even an adult, and men had way too much legal control over women. I think that is actually Wilkie Collins' main point! I always thought that the worst character of this story is Frederick Fairly. If he had been slightly less selfish and a bit more reasonable, Laura would've never been driven into such a helpless position.

And Walter Hartright didn't have the correct pedigree for being an acceptable suitor for a wealthy heiress! Remember, what happened to Count Fosco's wife. She had been disowned for having married a husband who was deemed to be unsuitable!

megandiekema, Ian Richardson is an excellent Frederick Fairly in both adaptations, although otherwise the later adaptation is completely botched! My personal favorite is the 2018 version of "The Woman In White", although it's somewhat less faithful to the novel. But the actors are good, the production values are great - and Charles Dance as Frederick Fairly is a pleasure to watch.

Sad to say the auto-generated English is better at hearing the voices than I am! Sometimes I can't catch the dialogue, as my ear is not attuned to their accents, but oddly enough the software picks it up. And where it goofs up, as at 9:03 for Sir Percival's final line of the scene, I can figure out what was really said.
