I had no idea this video was going to be so relevant to me when I clicked on it. My gastroenterologist is wanting to prescribe me 6MP for my ulcerative colitis, as the first phase of treatment has failed. This video got me slightly emotional and thankful to know that a woman was the one who designed this life saving drug. I’m so thankful she got the recognition she deserved in the end 😊. SciShow, thank you for continually making amazing content

I've never been involved in drug discovery but as far as I know it often costs roughly 1 billion dollars to discover and get a single drug on the market (I recently made a video about this topic). However, 86% of drugs still fail in this process. There are many reasons why this is the case, one of which is that mice are often used during pre-clinical phases. Although the physiologies between mice and humans are often very similar, there are slight differences on a molecular level. As a consequence, drugs, which might work in mice do not work in humans. Some years ago, however, we started to develop organoids. Those are structures and tissues which are made from human cells in the laboratory (cerebral organoids, for example, mimic the brain) and they are very exciting as they might partially replace mice in drug discovery leading to better outcomes! Feel free to ask me anything about the human body or stem cells (since I am conducting research in this field)!

@@sam08g16 because of the very nature of them. they are not minds. they are synthetic. their creation didn't involve creating life. Consciousness requires a brain and ALL (not really but not germaine) of its functionality and processes resulting from its existence. its not going to happen, outside their design parameters. think virtual programs that here aid research, furthering our knowledge of ourselves -here, pharmacological development. Consciousness is cognitive process. For it there must be ability to sense, to receive, process, and respond to stimuli (and loads of other things between and after) To be aware. to be alive in order to be aware even. they are not sentient, not alive. a single lug nut is not a car and here we are talking about the entire automotive industry. way over simplified but I know mathematics and pharmacodynamics. neither of which included in the many scientific fields and philosophical thinkings play part in defining the nature of consciousness, but that's ok as not my aim here. yet hopefully that give you an answer simply and not get bogged down in myriad other details or areas outside my field. I only saw your query to respond to the op.

That (bit at the end) wasn't fair. We will continue to benefit from her work even after every drug she conceived is replaced by a more effective drug, because those drugs will likely de developed using her rational methodology.

Art by Jeremy Maya Robinson Time will do that. Patents, unlike copyright, only last 20 years. Once any company can make it then there's cheap generic versions that are just as good cause they're chemically identical. I'd love for drugs to get cheap 20 years sooner but if it funds research that discovers the drug 20 years earlier than otherwise then it's a net win

The revolutionary process that Elion developed is, for all practical purposes, known as tweaking. That's what most drugs on the market do. They don't correct the underlying malfunction, but rather tweak the incredibly complex processes so lab outcomes look more favorable. A simplified version of this process in the computer industry would be called a "work around". This approach hasn't been very productive in helping sick people function better, but it has been incredibly profitable for drug companies.

Do you know that you do not need to denigrate men for explaining science? It was not "especially hard for a woman to get a job in science (as we can see), it is hard for everybody; science also is NOT the fight of one solitary believer against conservative, "male", ignorant disbelievers; instead: that's what was assumed, and this is what turned out to be - very obviously in a team effort of a lab full of human beings (not "men" and "women"). It is a pity that the entire journalistic representation needs to glorify "yet another brave woman fighting the patriarchy" and how she "defeated" wrongthinking, while this is truly nothing to do with how science proceeds, and misrepresents the men working AS EQUALS with said woman. You are doing a disservice to society with ideologically deluded reinterpretations of the past. You are not doing equality, but supremacy.
