I actually have psychogenic FAS! I'm Australian and I've never even left Queensland, but I'm constantly being asked where I'm from. I mostly have a Canadian/American accent with bits of British and Irish popping up from time to time. I still use most Australian slang so I sound a bit like a tourist trying too hard to fit in. Apparently, I was speaking with the right accent up until I was about 7 but then I switched after some very personal and unfortunate circumstances. It's really neat to see someone cover this since I rarely get to hear about it.

When I talk to someone with an accent or someone taking an accent, I tend to start unintentionally speaking with the same accent during that conversation. It doesn't continue like that after the conversion tho.
@Silentgrace114 жыл бұрын
This is actually an empathetic response common in most people. Basically your brain says, “Ope, someone sounds different than me, I better mimic them so they don’t think I’m an enemy or something,” resulting in a slight shift in accent to match the other speaker. They’re likely doing the same thing as well, resulting in two slightly altered, but as a result similar sounding, accents. The issue I run into is that I end up carrying those accents around after I finish the conversation, but I also spend a lot of time learning multiple languages and I have many friends from different countries and cultures, so I tend to just assume that part of my brain is suffering from system overload and doesn’t know what to do 😂

I have autism and so I’m easily influenced and latch onto random things. When I was a kid, I came out with an American accent (I’m welsh and live in the UK) and never really stopped. I’m 19 now and people often ask me where I come from and they’re always a little shocked to hear that I’ve never even been to America. It gets a little frustrating sometimes when it’s the first thing someone asks me 😂 I’m not sure if it’s FAS as it is linked my autism but this video just reminded me of myself

The "tapping your tongue between your teeth" thing for T and D just opened my eyes, for real! I've been pronouncing D and T in English wrong all this time! I've been pronouncing them like they're pronounced in Russian - with tongue tapped to the top of the mouth next to the front teeth, not on the teeth themselves! Doing it on the teeth makes the sound sharper, more th-like, way more like what native English speakers sound like!
@MinnesotaExpat4 жыл бұрын
I had the same problem speaking Spanish, but the other way. T and D in Spanish are laminal denti-alveolars, like their hard equivalents in Russian. Once I started moving my tongue back, my accent sounded less American.

This reminds me of a condition I read about (can't remember the name off the top of my head) but it involved a brain injury a person suffered, after speaking solely English their entire life, when they started to recover they found they couldn't speak a lick of English anymore but could speak perfect Italian, they basically had to relearn English. I found it really fascinating, like how can the brain essentially reprogram itself to speak an entirely different language than what it originally learned.

I think I had something similar to this happen to me. I haven't had any brain injuries, however, when I was around maybe 10-ish, I experience these weird blindness, heavy physical fatigue (where I felt like the whole world was moving normal while I was walking on the moon), vertigo episodes. Of course, as a child, I never told anyone this. During this period after, my speech changed where I had trouble pronouncing "th", "t", "d" and other sounds, as well as confusing "walk" and "work" among others. My accent had also changed. Because of this, I was bullied and stopped speaking, which probably made my accent worse. I had originally thought my speech problems was because of this as well as when I was younger, I lost my two front teeth and made a habit of poking my tongue through the gap creating buck-ish teeth when I was older. But that didn't explain my confusion between "walk-work". Watching this video reminded me of that episode, and here I am. I'm not trying to put a label on myself (already have enough of those, lol), but I thought you guys might find this interesting.

This reminds me of a recurring dream I have off and on... In it, I go to bed all normal but when I wake up, I find that I am unable to speak or read my native language (English) but instead can only speak and read Japanese. I live in a part of the world where there are practically no Japanese people. If such a thing happened, it would be exceedingly difficult to recover from. The dream is always the same. Go to bed speaking English, wake up only able to speak Japanese, then proceeding to try to inform everyone I know that I can no longer understand them, but they can't understand me either. Then towards the end of the dream, I encounter an older Japanese man who knows English and Japanese and helps me relay information to the people I know. He then begins teaching me English, then the dream ends. I've been having this dream off and on for decades.

I love doing funny accents and imitations. I often find sometimes if I spend a long time doing a certain voice or accent. When I go back to normal, sometimes I just talk in the accent. It’s like a cool down run

If I done ended up with this condition I'd be fine with that. If I happened to end up with this sort of condition I would be okay with the results of said condition

I have such a strong accent that I found a way to transfer my accent to text and writing like saying "That ain't it" or "Somethin' ain't right" I love it so much :>

I used to do this Christopher Walken impression all the time as a kid to get people to laugh. I ended up doing that impression so much that it actually affected my normal speaking accent so I randomly sounded kind of Boston/New Yorkian whenever I was thrown off guard. It still pops in every now and again even.

5:21 The last thing you wanna do is factory reset your brain, you'd have to download all your language and math knowledge again, just roll back to a previous state so you don't loose anything too important.

You'd not only have to relearn language and math, you'd have to recalibrate your motor functions, and probably wear a diaper until you had enough of a handle on it to not soil and/or wet yourself, and that's just no fun.

To be fair, I believe there's a more natural way accents happen. I moved to Kentucky over 6 months ago and slowly picked up the southern accent. Weirdly though speaking proper for which I'm initally from Illinois, feels odd but I've met plenty of people native to the south whom have no accent whatsoever which seems strange but you get used to it fast. Good job Brew for covering this! Some people don't know how or why this happens but this video does a great job explaining it.

Chill's French is a mix of Québec and Acadian. Neat!
