Hey folks! We have moved captions to the CC function to give you the option of turning them off/on. We personally write the captions ourselves, and upload them to KZbin's CC. Just make sure you choose "English" instead of "English (Auto-generated)". Here's how to turn on CC: For Mobile: Tap your video, select the 3 dots in the top right corner, select Captions, select English. For Desktop: Hover over your video until the playbar shows up, click on the CC logo near the bottom right. Enjoy! ☕️

My grandma had agoraphobia for most of her life, but it became really severe towards the end of her life. It started when she had a heart attack and became afraid of going far away from home, in case it happened again and there was no one to help her. Over the years it progressed from being afraid to go too far away, to being afraid to leave her own yard, to being afraid to go outside at all. She started spending more and more time in the guest bedroom of her home, and like the two cases described here, one day she went in and just... never came out. She spent the last few years of her life in that room, on absurd doses of tranquilizers that her irresponsible doctor would prescribe, watching TV and drifting in and out of consciousness. Ironically, when she finally did pass away, her heart--the thing she was so worried about for years--was the last thing to go. RIP, Grammy. I hope wherever you are, you're not afraid anymore.

What you said about the heart is similar to my mom. They diagnosed a weak heart at her, and over about 5 years, her basket of medicine to take every day filled more and more... One medicine against the side effects of the other. I had agoraphobia as a teen. I was bullied at school and beaten at home and funnily enough, the only place I could actually avoid that was the downstairs toilet, the only room with a strong lock and I actually did wind up sleeping in their multiple times so I can really empathise with the security it brings. Though it's still not completely safe. It's a tough mental barrier to break.

I would just like to contribute that there's a reason why it's the bathroom that seems safe. In many homes, bathrooms are the only room that has a lock on the door handle. If you've tried to escape someone else in your home, the bathroom seems like a decent option because of the lock. The abuser can't get in. So it becomes a safe haven of sorts to wait out the storm until they aren't going to hurt you anymore.

Hey, I know it's been a while, but I hope you are doing ok. I understand wanting to isolate sometimes, and it's ok! Of course, not wanting it to become a problem is also normal, but quitting cold turkey would be hard, right? Maybe gradually finding another way to cope? I hope you are doing ok, but if you don't, it's also ok if you need some times or help. Be kind and patient with yourself, you deserve to feel safe in a way that's good for you :)

Yeah. The bathroom's a space that can start to feel like it's the only place you aren't under constant scrutiny, or somehow expected to pay attention to everyone else's needs while putting up with never having your own needs considered. They're cool and quiet, too, long as you're alone. Feeling as though you can't leave is a horrifying thought, but I can certainly see how people developing agoraphobia could see their bathroom with it's good, solid lock as a mental safe room.

My next door neighbour got trapped in his bathroom a couple of weeks ago and only got out when I heard him yelling through the ventilation fan and called the building manager to let him out. 😅 I was so glad it wasn't me! I was diagnosed with agoraphobia about 7 years ago and I still go through bad patches at times. Lockdown has not been great for it as staying at home too much is one of the biggest triggers for me to spiral back into it. It's not a fun thing to live with, having a panic attack at the mere thought of having to do groceries is no way to live.

@@Johndoe200I we are even more vulnerable when eating yet I don't think we consider the kitchen the safest place in the house. This video honestly spoke to me in a way. it never got too severe with me, but I've been suffering with anxiety and fear of being in public places since 7th grade. My family never really supported me, instead blaming me for it. I would spend almost all my school years at home, feeling to afraid to go places, since my parents never really allowed me to, which helped develop my phobia. I especially thought of the bathroom to be a safe place, so I would go there a lot. 2 years ago, I had a sudden explosion in my life: I was suddenly in a serious relationship, started going to uni, had to take the subway daily and also started therapy. First time in the subway I was swimming in my clothes from sweating, I got panicked, and I ran out of it. I was sobbing. But eventually, I got used to it by taking it daily and then it became a fun experience. Quarantine here was over about a month ago and it has me struggling to remember my old habits and self again. I struggle a lot, and this video reminded me of how trapped I was actually feeling. Especially class, that was the worst place and I would always get diarrhea every morning.
