If anyone cared to go to the meeting, shed be identified immediately. They once uncovered a mans identity by zooming in on his fingerprint from an ig photo about a rare apple. Tania Njeimer is a Dutch national who for some reason decided to join the FARC.. you failed to mention that. She talks about Colombian society as if she was forced to live that reality…. The whole thing was like that. The interviewer made it seem like life in the jungle was hell, and then when interviewing the last woman who describes how she was told she HAS to wear heels, and to act like a 'woman' the interviewer is just like 'do you think integration is hard?' The woman goes on to say she misses the jungle, and its clear shes not a fan of how she was lied to... The interviewer just ignores all that and just has softball questions. idk this was hard to watch from a subjective frame of mind. It's incredible how people expect everyone in a revolutionary movement to be able to talk or do a discourse about political theory... most people can't do this and this is fine. The 20 years old girl doesn't need to understand the minutiae of theory, she doesn't need to fully grasp Marxist concepts, because she is living it. She witnessed oppression and class struggle, she is enduring it. She is taking part in a movement and learning as she goes. This is natural. Imagine if we asked every Christian about Trinitarianism doctrine. How many Christians would be able to talk about it? Is someone less of a believer (or a lesser Christian) for not knowing about the Trinitarianism doctrine? How many people in a capitalist society could talk meaningfully about market-oriented economies? How many would only look like they are parroting propaganda or coach-talk? Especially because, for a Marxist, what one thinks (their thoughts) is secondary to what one does (their actions). Action begets thought. Following Pascal: you don't pray because you believe, you believe because you pray.

I've always loved Vice Content but this interviewer felt like she had an agenda to sustain, she barely mentions "El Plan Colombia" and barely mentions the true scope of the class system that the country has in place or the drug trade / war on drugs context to understand what their fight is really about and the causes for such conflict; . I got a vibe that this piece was kind of putting in doubt the commitment of the FARC soldiers to their ideals with a "Gotcha" moment. I wish there were more local journalists covering this and not through an American-lense but well it is an American media company after all.

This documentary paints the reintegration process as a means for peace, but it essentially ignores the fact that these women are giving up on their principles of equality and what they have fought for to be a part of a society that oppressed them in the first place. it's a recipe for a vicious cycle. it'd have been good if there was some focus on what the government is doing to alleviate the injustice and meet the 'rebel' group halfway instead of painting it as this pariah who is doing its utmost to create peace.

These women did not join FARC for their principles of equality. They joined because they wanted a paycheck and did not have opportunity where they came from. But millions of other people are in the same position and they don't join an organization that murders, smuggles drugs, kidnaps innocent people and steals from the people. Without opportunity life can be hard in Colombia but its no reason to be a terrorist.

Women being part of the peace process is essential. I've seen community bodies of women do incredible things. The mamas councils in peshmerga neighborhoods are a great example. They settle disputes and conflicts over things like murders between the families of those involved. It's really something.

She, as an American interviewer, cannot comprehend what they just said. The follow up questions and the dialogue from the interviewer sounded so disconnected. And not everything translated in their own subtitles was translated correctly. So sad that those who don’t know Spanish won’t know this story was painted poorly. Vice needs to hire more Latino American people to do these stories not a “yo-no-sabo” white lady. [I’m fluently bilingual in Spanish and English]

De-legitimizing the enormous, uncountable number of Spanish-speaking native North-Americans, and the various cultures planted here simply because of her.. skin color(?)/Western-ness(?), is ironically the most regressive and backward thing you could have done here. Bravo! Now if you're talking about her/Vice's perspective that's one thing, but to chalk it down to base racism or nationalism, or to mock someone with a different dialect as a linguistic elitist with your no sé/no sabo reference, marks you as ignorant, and again, very ironically, representative of the good old fashioned toxicity in classical machismo culture, that is prevalent in most Latino cultures.
@TemenosL
@TemenosL 7 ай бұрын
If you would have actually experienced any of the various cultures that have become ingrained in North American culture, you'd realize how ridiculous you sound. Spanish (mostly Mexican-based), is the second-most spoke language here. 47 million, or 17%, of the population is Hispanic. While it's absolutely true that there are clueless, conventionally "white" Americans that just aren't with the program, America isn't a single color or ethnicity or background, and to label "American" as exclusively "yo no sabo", utterly de-legitimizes the citizenship and shared identity of the rest of the nation, who have fought hard as hell to be recognized as equals here. Triply-ironic given your stance, is the fact that your location is listed as CANADIAN. Indigenous? Quebecois? If not, an ignorant person could use your same argument against you.
