36:00 How many other game reviewers can say that about a game they're reviewing? How many of them can say they've played it completely even once? This is why I like Matthew's videos and pay some credence to his opinions. He very clearly cares about games in the same way I do.

Onderonable To be fair, a review written on a tight deadline, before it becomes avalaible (or during that time period) is a very different approach from the luxury of time that Matt had in creating his take on the game. The first functions as some kind of buyer's guide (and any broad, hyperbolic statements should be avoided in this type of review as it will misfire more often than not) and the latter can be a long form, extensive critique, going into the finer details and assessing the game's overall importance and historic significance. resulting from at least one full playthrough and knowledge of its reception over a longer period of time. Obviously, I find Matt's approach much more valuable, but there are very different circumstances surrounding both situations.
@Vulgarth1
@Vulgarth1 5 жыл бұрын
@@michielkroder4031 But that tight deadline is the result of choices made by the people directly involved. They all want to be the first to cover something, they want to be paid as much as possible or benefit as much as possible from getting in the door ASAP. Journalism and sensationalism are quite tightly intertwined by way of pure greed.
@KennyHazy97
@KennyHazy97 4 жыл бұрын
@@Vulgarth1 That begs the question: Why do they think it so important to be the first ones to cover something? If so much of the games community wasn't so focused on clamouring to hear a number score for games they were heavily, even emotionally interested in, in particular being investing in hearing their darlings get high scores of those they for whatever reason don't want to succeed get low scores, then that pressure to place speed over quality of review wouldn't exist.

retractingblinds All acting as one person means you control them, but not individually or like in a strategy game. Plus from that perspective it will easily make one think of Pikmin. And Revengeance was mentioned because it's a game by Platinum and it sounds cooler than Bayonetta. And still, it's a joke.

What an amazing review, easily the best review of this game I've ever seen. This game is one of the biggest tragedies in gaming, it's an incredible game, wonderful even, and is so sad that nobody bought it, is incredibly sad that so much people missed out on the experience that is The Wonderful 101... Outside factors have to have a big hand in making a game profitable, including marketing, journalism, and even word of mouth. It is sad when none of these have an impact on the video game's quality itself. A polished turd only has to sell like hot cakes to be considered successful.

retractingblinds Sales do matter when it comes to whether nintendo is going to make a sequel. If it only sells a few thousand then nintendo will never consider making a sequel. And unfortunately it makes sense. Why would you make a game that will only sell a few thousand when you could drake a game that would sell a few hundred thousand.

Been looking forward to this video since you mentioned it on that 4chan thread ages ago. If it hadn't been in your script already, thanks for throwing in that gripe about the poor rate that you unlock new unite morph combos. It's a damn shame that W101 sold as poorly as it did, because it was by far my favourite game of 2013 and should've been the WiiU's killer app. I can only pray to god it becomes a slow burning cult classic.

I added those lines after you mentioned it so thanks for bringing it up. It's the kind of thing easily overlooked when you're on your 4th playthrough. In addition to the observations about the advantages of the drawing mechanic, another point is that the Wonder Liner is a physical object within the game world. It's not just that it can be blocked by obstacles. It sweeps terrain to collect items. It attacks enemies and creates stunlock when changing weapons in combos. Also, many people don't seem aware the director, Kamiya, was the director of Clover's Okami on the PS2. The drawing mechanic actually originated there, and long before the Wii U gamepad. W101 seems more like a refinement of the Okami concept. Another interesting point is that the developer discussed early prototypes of the game where switching between a few test weapons was performed with a button. Their testers found that it wasn't fun. It was slow, and waiting for the many team members to run into position interrupted the flow of the game. By literally drawing the weapon using team members as the "paint", the player is always, actively engaged in play.

I bought this game because of the review. I think, aside from the camera and the lack of explanation of how to deal with enemies at the start, that the game is great. I feel like I am completely in unchartered territory with the mechanics, and I am really glad to see that there are games out there that still place mastery of the mechanics as the main draw.

Platinum games make me feel like I really suck at them. I can kick ass in a level and earn mostly Pure Platinum ranks in something like Bayonetta, but then at the end of the level I'm slapped with a bronze or stone final ranking. Not a huge deal but it sure is a deflating feeling to have the game point out how good you are doing the whole time only to change its mind on the last screen because you missed a secret encounter or were blindsided by an insta-kill QTE. Certain elements should not be reflected when tallying a rank for overall combat skill.
@stacetheface47
@stacetheface47 10 жыл бұрын
One other thing to keep in mind too about bayonetta 1's ranking system is that your penalized for using health items. I'm not sure that's what your doing but bayonetta was particularly harsh about using items. I know this because I had the same problem for a while and then I learn how to utilize the combat system even more and was able to plat and gold most levels. Bayonetta 2 rectify this problem instead it put greater emphasis on combos and damage as opposed to item usage, which I found to be a greater improvement not to mention getting rid of the QTE's from the original. Keep practicing the game rewards you in spades for it.

Hm I might give it another try. I played through like half of the game?!(Got the bomb,won PunchOut and rescued Vorkken) I felt it was too frustrating, confusing and punishing. The camera is too zoomed in and if you get hit once you are screwed because you cant dodge or block the next move because your people are scattered. The quick time events where you often have to jump from a certain point got me killed and at the end of most chapters the game tells you "you suck". I want to like it since the style is great and I like the whole concept but I did not have much fun with the gameplay. Especially the Vorkken fights were boring as hell. Every fight felt like it took ages. But I played a bit different than Matthew here who often just stood there a long time and blocked the enemy attacks. I played more aggressive, maybe that was a mistake. I will give it another go and I hope I will enjoy it at least half as much as Matthew.

I would still be a lot happier if I could turn off the ratings. I know I barely made it, I dont want to have it shoved down my throat. The first time playing I am anyways just trying to beat it. Its bad enough when team mates in games start flaming but I dont need the game to do that too :P And in the Vorkken fights I waited for the fists so I could counter because otherwise he would take almost no dmg or throws some unblockable(?) stuff like the bladeboomerang and he had like 10 health bars. I know I just absolutely hated all the Vorkken fights, every fight more than the last one. I LOVE really difficult games but it also has to be fun and the challenge2fun-ratio was pretty bad for me so far.

Everything you say here is true. Though the game can be rather frustrating at times, and sometimes you have to play it a second time to get it, the title is truly that.. wonderful. Even if it's not your kind of game, you've gotta respect Platinum for the high quality _and_ content they put in this. The game is long, there's so many fleshed out and creative game mechanics, and there's so much collectables and unlockables and achievements.. it's crazy. Hat's off to you, Platinum. But seriously, the conclusion; the last of the rising action, the climax (oh the climax xD), and the resolution; is the best conclusion I've ever experienced in a game. Hands down. Still, with how much I enjoyed the Wonderful 101 (and as cringed as this may sound,) I'm treating this loss of progress like a friend struck with amnesia. Miguel Valencia oh yeah. I got the splatoon Wii U and though i don't play splatoon all that much anymore, it was fun for a while. i also got pikmin, hyrule warriors, bayonetta 2, and Fatal Frame 5. They're all good games that i'll likely revisit once every year or so. FF5 every Halloween for sure.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Okami. The relatively slower-paced game of Kamiya’s has always been a favorite of mine, and the unique style, concept, and tone make it stand out to me. As you appear to have been a fan of Kamiya’s for longer than I have, I think hearing your perspective would make for a very interesting experience.

This review is making me want to give Wonderful 101 another try. I quit playing it after a couple of play-sessions, because I found it overwhelmingly difficult. But now it looks like I ought to buy Unite Guts and Unite Spring right off the bat and give it another try.

Wow! I just got a Wii U and I was really on the fence about this game after being pretty disappointed with Metal Gear Rising, but your in-depth review really pushed me in favor of giving this a buy. I am a huge fan of Platinum games and hearing you talk about this game in the manner you did really gives me the idea that I will enjoy it as much as I loved playing Bayonetta and Vanquish. Nice review, keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next video!

Never played this game before, and never plan on playing this game either. Not because I think it's bad or anything, just because I don't really plan on getting a Wii U unless there's a real big change at Nintendo. But anyways, even though I don't know shit about this game and therefore this review should hold no interest to me, I just love listening to your analysis. Every video you make a learn something, even if it's a game I don't know at all like this. You've changed the way I will review both games and films in the future. Keep up the good work boss

I suspect the reason why there aren't many formations of different enemies even on higher difficulties might have to do with the Wii U's technical specifications not allowing to do so. Not so much because of its GPU, which is apparently more powerful than the Xbox 360's or the PlayStation 3's RSX, but because of its CPU, which seems to be notably slower than the 360's and especially the PS3's Cell (and maybe the RAM, too). The game also has to further split these resources between the main display and the GamePad's, all the while trying to keep a 60 FPS refresh rate.

For the *having to unlock moves back in the menues*, I can guarantee you that it is made on purpose. DMC3 and DMC4 are some of the better-constructed fighting games that I know personally (Penalty on spamming, scoring system, complete freedom of action and sweet sweet style). Adding moves one over another in games where inventing combo is natural needs to be tediously slow. In the case of DMC3, Each weapon have 3-4 unlockable techniques via menues + 3 style actions, depending if you took swordmaster or gunslinger. having 6x2 moves that can be placed anywhere in your combos, may it be openers, extenders, cancellers or finishers, without restriction at all is a great amount of strain on the player's brain. It needs to be introducted very slowly. There you go. Great review, as always :D

I only watched the first few minutes seeking some general thoughts, and I'm so amazed. I never bought unite guts, and I had played right to after you get unite gun. Not to mention when you showed you can reflect lasers with the unite sword? I need to go back and play this game actually knowing what I'm doing.

sonicboomers122 Probably. The game doesn't hand hold muhc, and usually that doesn't bother me (playing DMC3 on PS3 HD collection right now and it's just as bad/similar). Probably just missed it. Not buying Guts seems to have been a huge fatal mistake. though.

I don't think it's a good idea for me to accept games from people. I'm a bit of a cynic so I'm imagining a scenario where some publisher/developer tries to get a game into my hands by gifting it to me through a dummy account. It's an unlikely scenario for sure but one I don't want to open myself up to. I really appreciate the thought though, it's enough just to know you'd like to help out.

That's understandable, it's completely dependent on your standards and comfort level with it. Just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate all the hard work and the fairness that you produce your videos with. Your seem very aware of your biases and the fact that these are products made by actual people, and I think that's a very important perspective to have. So thank you :) Plus you cover Platinum and Fromsoft games, so whats not to love.

I'm actually replaying through the Remastered version on my Switch since playing it when it came out on Wii U, and in the Switch version, it outright tells you you need to buy unite guts and spring right after the prologue. I really can't remember, but was that not present in the original version?

this game is so brilliant; all about creative combos & varying your techniques... Juggling enemies by transforming into a giant tombstone and slamming down, then smashing up as a rocket ship... Loved Bayonetta & Revengeance but this game holds a much bigger place in my heart. There's something so slapsticky & lighthearted about it.

Huh.. I just realised what this game reminds me of. During the same year as Little Big Planet 2 was released, a gamer with the user name Felkroth made an JPRG styled action rpg in the game, called Sealed Fate, which is about drawing a certain symbol which will then indicate the spell you will cast. It was surprisingly forgiving and yet accurate drawing system, plus very fast so you could easily draw a spell during fight without having to worry that much about having to just stand still for a while.

Nice review. It felt a little different than your other reviews, in a good way. You spent almost the entire video talking about the gameplay alone. I really appreciate this considering that, according to me and many others, gameplay is what makes a game. If you are going to review a game, focus on the gameplay. I think story, music, visuals all come second(which apparently is not shared with mainstream game journalists). These things are of course important, but should not be prioritised when making a game. Solid review overall. I give it a 101/10. Also, do you have a new mic or something? Your voice sounds a bit different too.

6:00 I actually bought Unite Spring when it was first available, but then pretty much forgot about it after failing to see how to use it. It took me until the third fight with Vorkken for that to click, and before that I lost count of the number of times I said to myself "What the hell? There was no way to dodge that!"

This review inspired me to go out and get The Wonderful 101, It sort of overwhelmed me because I felt I didn't understand what I was doing or what I was doing wrong(I still don't entirely understand some moves). I'm still not 100% with it but given the praise in this video I hope it grows on me. Though the Gamepad sections are annoying(mostly because I just don't like the WiiU gamepad)

The game only slows down during the most complex of fights. It is hardly noticeable. I doubt this game would flourish on a Xbox or PS4. The game is unique, it suits Nintendo. It is just a game that requires commitment.

I watched it. There are games on the much older 360 that run at that benchmark- Bayonetta another platinum games title met the feat of 60fps and that was back in 2009. Give the ps4 some time I think we'll see games go beyond the scale of the wonderful 101 locked at 60 fps on the newer more capable consoles

Platinum has never made a game that didn't have some framerate problems. also lol @ blaming the hardware for the camera angle.
@ClassicKrusty
@ClassicKrusty 10 жыл бұрын
Yep BC the hardware could be the reason the camera is positioned more closely. Platinum designed it that way so that the system wouldn't have to render things in the background since it would tax the system's capability to process everything without it dropping even more frames. That's BC platinum prizes fps more than resolution, however I think your assement is kinda short sighted BC with Bayonetta Platinum achieved 50-60 fps and that was with modest xbox 360 specs.

29:20 You're right, the camera ruins this section, but it was also my favourite of the shooter portions. I disliked how disjointed the shooter sections felt from the core gameplay, especially with how long they all were. But allowing us to use our Unite attacks in conjunction with the ship was a great compromise, and I frankly wish every other shooter had tried to mix that in.
