The Wonkavator: The most amazing elevator ever!

(8-29-2014) This thing is amazing and was featured in the 2003 movie Anger Management. I have never seen an elevator system like this before. Sadly as I am typing this, the elevator in this video is meeting a wrecking ball :(

Some ask: what is preventing passengers from falling down or getting injured? Common sense and simply being careful i say. This elevator is not dangerous at all But the world is not simple anymore. It has become so hysteric and paranoid and that is why we can't have nice things like this anymore. I would rather live my life with "dangerous" freedom than in todays dull and idiot-proof society ruled by bureaucrats. So sad to see this exciting and awesome piece of engineering dissapear.

That was an Amazing elevator! Too bad it is gone... There is a similar one in Hamburg... PostTower filmed it already. But it is hard to reach.

wow, that is VERY special and awesome. I have found a similar working elevator in a hotel car storage. It can also move vertical (normal lift) and the entire lift shaft can move horizontal. And the lift can do both the same time. Video follows soon!

This is incredible. I wonder if you could even build a structure like this today. There's nothing to keep someone from falling off one of the ledges next to the elevator.

Indeed, about those ledges that was scary! And no doors? Maybe that's why if was being demolished (even though an upgrade to safety would be easy to add) also Jacob? Which hotel did YOU stay in when you went to nyc?

I wonder how old it is. There is no way that could have been built even 20 years ago. There is absolutely nothing stopping you from falling over a ledge, or even off of the moving elevator. If your foot slipped and you were standing too close to the edge your leg could be taken right off by a passing floor.

I live right by this... always wanted to ride them but never bothered to ask and there's no way to sneak in. Building's going down for even more high rise luxury rentals or condos, just what we need down here. Gonna miss seeing these all the time, I would always be fascinated by them even as a little kid.

I saw an elevator in the 2012 movie total recall. It looked like a regular elevator from inside but it went horizontal as well as vertical. Heres a video from the movie. Total Recall | Elevator Action Fight Scene The cars run on magnetic tracks similar to a Maglev Train. The elevator is more like a transit system than an elevator. Hope you like this one Andrew.

Well, this is not a true Wonkavator. The Wonkavator can also go forwards and backwards and diagonal.

Did you just walk into the garage and ask the employees if you can ride this elevator? Or did you call in advance and arrange the visit ahead of time? I know of some parking garages with freight elevators (none like this unfortunately, the ones I know of are regular vertical door freight elevators, but some are vintage or antique) and am considering asking for permission to ride them.

This elevator dose not seem save. Theres no door. And at the top it looked like you could fall down that shaft. There was no railing on the top. I don't think i would be comfortable riding that.
