@woodentops thanks so much, that really is just the best to hear. You've been such a huge influence and inspiration to us for so many years. Thanks for the kind words, we are kind of blown away that you had a listen to us knowing how many thousands of times we've listened to you and love every song. Heartfelt thanks ❤️

I also love the Woodentops. Veeeery unique, no other band like them. For the eighties, Wire, Woodentops, and Wall Of Voodoo were a blessing in originality. Also, Rolo McGinty has one of the sexiest most versatile voices in rock.

A unique band who often struggled to capture the raw energy of their live performances on their records. This one and Well Well Well came the closest.

I used to make cassette tapes of my favorite bands and just pop them in my Mustang and drive for hours. Of all the tapes I made The Woodentops one was thee best to listen to. The tempo of many of their songs was just perfect for a good time drive. You haven't lived until you drive around in a 1968 Mustang rocking to "Travelling Man" or "Stop This Car." And even the slower cutesy ones ("Make Me Feel," "Good Thing") were perfect driving songs. This band should have taken their demos not to Rough Trade, but to Ford or General Motors. Ah, they would have been billionaires by now.

Yeah, Ziggy's or as it was known to us locals : CLUB THING, on account of a letter sent to Liverpool band Pink Industry asking "would you like to come play at this club thing we're starting?" and it stuck ever since. The roll call was pretty amazing and we no longer had to squash into cars and drive to 150km to Bristol for gigs.

I wonder if their new stuff will compare to Giant ? I rate Giant in my top 20 debut albums of all time. Their second album with the very long title seemed to pale in comparison to Giant. Wish I'd seen them live, though.
@garethmorgan57810 жыл бұрын
Giant is up there for me as well Ian, but in my opinion, all their records pale into insignificance compared to watching them live, as the records didn't quite capture the intensity and energy of their gigs which I had the pleasure of experiencing
@thewoodentops.10 жыл бұрын

How was Andy partridge to work with ?
@thewoodentops.6 жыл бұрын
Hi. he was a) good fun as a person, b) really meticulous and clear minded.c) Experinental, d) knowledgable about techniques and keen to learn new ones e) Keen to jump in and help fill out the backing vocals, join in making home made click track f) very funny g) wide vocabulary of music past and present h) looked after me which at the time was, lets say unpredictable. i) really great to have a superb guitar player to work with Simon, they could talk about guitars and play together exchanging ideas. j) made sure I had a boss acoustic, a Martin, a particular one he had himself recorded with , you could rent it. k) never late L) good stories when needed m) a hero of mine n) introduced me to John Leckie o) also when i had ideas about him doing the project under a pseudonym so our record would be reviewed for what we had done rather than the producer taking up a large space of the small reviews as seemed to happen with say Dave Balfe. Reviews all about the Teardrop Explodes. Andy was gracious and said 'well only if you think of a name I like.' During our time i noticed peoples dogs would often seem to make their way over to him. Dogs he didn't know. For some reason they were attracted to him. We laughed about that one time and I said 'man you're like some sort of Animal Jesus' Andy looked and me said hey use that. produced by Animal Jesus. I thank him for that. In fact it drew more attention to the team as people would want to know, who really was that? P) Partridge. q) When we met him he came over to my flat and met the guitar player Simon and myself. Stayed around, we got the 8 track out and just for fun instead of say talking, knocked up a track. A disco tune in fact and the three of us leapt in whenever we had an idea. which was quick and non stop. r) rolo me. bit Ok , sometimes a bit rude. s) we did the single above in the film, the other tracks too, one of which is the deepest vocal and backing track of our music to date. The story of that track Steady Steady is too long for here. Andy was important to it. t) We did a further session, including recordings of songs that appeared later on the first album. Also Well Well Well the single was recorded by Andy and John Leckie u) Cold Inside the b side of Well Well Well has a great manually detuned piano part played by myself that he was manipulating a Revox tape recorder, jamming the wheel, speeding up, showing down to twist and bend the notes of my improvisation. v) our beats were very us, Andy did not try to change them, in fact he worked hard to make them brutal as possible w) the woodies benefited greatly from working with him x) the effects on my strange lead casio part at the end of move me. awesome! y) we made sure the tempos were even so it would be club floor friendly. always important that.click track! even if a human one. as the years have gone by Ive heard of so many night clubs of early 80's having move me as a floor filler. z) thanks for asking.

...continues...After a few months Ziggy's owners stole it back and wrecked it. But there were never enough of us to sustain it. 30-60 on average, even for 2 incredible Primal Scream early gigs (one with The Pastels other with Shop Assistants). Jesus & MC the band to sell out (and got chucked out later). Tipped off by a house of nurses in Hammersmith Woodentops became an essential booking as did the records to the collection. It just didn't happen for me on that night.

Rolo, you're not and never will be Nick Cave even if you dance the same. Great to listen to, awful, to watch. We booked them in Plymouth, England. They didn't Move many, which was always there problem. I loved the speed of the songs but just look at them... Buskers...give 'em a little record deal and watch 'em go.
