A scene from The Woodsman starring Kevin Bacon and Michael Shannon, two amazing actors. Kevin Bacon's character is sharing some childhood experiences with his counselor, and Kevin Bacon's character begins to tear up.

I feel like the reason Bacon's incredible acting in this film didn't get the recognition it deserved is because of the subject matter. He's just phenomenal.

The acting is beyond amazing, the way he quickly says "I was six years old" is met with so much shame and pain. He's very aware of himself and it's such a conflicting mess of emotions in his head. No, we don't sympathise with people who molest and abuse children but it is something that cannot just be wired 'fixed' so quickly and I think Kevin Bacon did an amazing job at showing the frustrating side of being attracted to this topic.

@@cthulhucrews6602 Here is a little bit of truth for people: I watched this movie as part of my group counselling after being released from prison for sexually abusing a young girl. This movie is WAY more accurate than most people realize. You are absolute correct that my behavior was like that of an addict, or really anyone who deals with mental health struggles badly. The natural question people always ask is "why did you do it", but really that is two questions in one: Why were you in such a bad spot with your mental health? And why was it that your bad coping mechanism was to turn to inappropriate and harmful sexual acts, as opposed to something like becoming an alcoholic or over eating or whatever. The first question is up to each and every one of us, but really we should all answer it, whether or not you have already caused harm to others (most people have to varying degrees, whether they know it or not). We all have mental health and being in good mental health is every bit as critical as being in good physical health. Just as "being physically healthy" involves more than "not having cancer or heart disease", the same is true for mental health. The second questions is actually the harder one to answer for most of us. I desperately wish that my bad coping mechanism was merely alcoholism or drug addiction, the world would have thought better of me if I had killed someone by drinking and driving rather than me sexually abusing a young girl, but I need to live with the fact that I did the latter. Kevin Bacon does an amazing job of portraying this in film. There are two parts to this film that REALLY hit home. First is when he asks he therapist "when will I be normal", to which there is no answer (I've since come to recognize that there really is no such thing as "normal"). The second is when he is beating the shit out of Candy and he is punching his own face in. One of the hardest parts of this is learning to like oneself after all this. My own self-hatred was a big part of why I didn't care about hurting others in the first place. Fixing that is part of making sure I never offend again.

@@cthulhucrews6602 Thank you, and yes I'm in a much better place in my life now. I'm just a few days shy of 4 years out of prison now, still on a journey to learn more about what makes this brain of mine tick, and constantly vigilant to make sure I never hurt anyone again, but generally living a good life. Being arrested was both the worst and best thing that ever happened in my life. While I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a solution to others, it made me sit up and realize that I needed to deal with my shit.

@hosermcmoose your story is very interesting. Thank you for having the courage to share it. I watched this movie about 8 years ago due to writing a book that was as dark and depressing as this movie. I never have sexually abused anyone myself. However, I have had horrible horrible thoughts due to having harm OCD. Harm OCD is a way different deal from actually being a pedophile or having violent tendencies. I like that you're recognizing and healing everything. And I'm glad all is well.

Ironic that the only person that truly got through to him was the girl on the bench.
@joshburns46116 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it ironic. I think that was done on purpose. Think about a real life child molester that somehow stumbled across this movie and watched the park scene. Depending on how far a child molester has gone, this movie could help them to realize what they're doing.
@hosermcmoose Жыл бұрын
Tragic, perhaps, but not even the least bit ironic or surprising. What is much more sad is that the only person that truly got through to the young girl on the bench was this man who had sexually abused girls in the past. She quickly knew exactly what/who he was, and that is why she felt safe in talking to him. It is very clear that he was the very first (and only) person she ever told about the abuse she was suffering.

@hosermcmoose Жыл бұрын
@@Tackica12 The not liking someone behind his back was 100% about jail, not any sort of sexual abuse he went through. He just spent 10 years in jail watching his own back to ensure no one shanked him. In jail no one watches your back, no matter what they might say. Even my comparatively short jail sentence taught me that. The ridiculous (totally unqualified? or at least really bad at his job?) psychotherapist creeping up behind him like that would have freaked out anyone who just got out of a long jail sentence, no matter what it was for. However, particularly those convicted of sex crimes who have lost it on him. This scene had absolutely nothing to do with any sexual abuse or inappropriate attracting. There are other scenes in the movie that suggest he was sexually abused as a child (particularly how he looks/acts toward 'Candy'), but this wasn't one of them.
