In a later Dobie Gillis show,Dobie pointed out to Maynard that he wasn't a member of the Beat Generation-but just a guy who adapted the clothes and beard and hip talk so he could listen to jazz in style. They were on the verge of graduating High School and were worried about their future.

Yes. Dobbie asked him what the Beat Generation was and he couldn't tell him. Then he said what does generation mean? Maynard replied "let's go back to beat". Lol😂

Maynard wasn't really Beat, he was a comedy writer's uncomprehending take on Beat -- "beatniks" were to Beat what "Step'n'Fetchit" was to real black people. And in the late '50s what remained of Beat was ultra-radical, if you could find the real thing. By that time it was starting to transform into other things and eventually it helped to give birth to "hippies" among other things.

"and eventually it helped to give birth to "hippies"": so that's who we blame?

Lord Groundhog - There is no connection whatsoever between the “beats” and the “hippies.”

Lord Groundhog A TV show poofing a chosen identity that became a trendy thing and making fun of a racial group with a mocking routine aren’t quite the same. But I hear you.
