The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar has been described as the most controversial World Cup of all time.
Critics of Qatar hosting the tournament point to the country's human rights violations, the treatment of migrant workers, and to the FIFA corruption involved in their winning bid, meanwhile supporters claim that Qatar has reformed and that this World Cup presents a unique opportunity in the region.
In this documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at some of those claims and counter-claims, the reality of Qatar's bid, and the argument over whether the upcoming World Cup should ever have been allowed to happen.

Make it really unique by having it in tiny, pre-existing Cymru Premier “stadiums” with their capacities of 50-ish. We can have bigger games in Swansea’s Stadium, Cardiff City’s stadium and Wrexham’s racecourse ground… with the final at the Millennium stadium, with a capacity of 80,000+ Put dragon flags everywhere, with some temporary outside seating for big screens etc… with Wales as host, the only human rights issues would be a beer shortage scenario. Yes Alfie, thank you. At risk of sounding pretentious or grandiose, it really is important that you/we all take a no nonsense approach to confronting the circumstances which this World Cup in particular finds itself in, without caving into any whataboutisms, apologists or contrarians (for the sake of contrarianism). Not sure if you'll particularly take to this comparison, but at some point in your breakdown of how one would have to justify oneself in supporting this tournament's hosts, you reminded me of a 2000s Christopher Hitchens, who never cared for sport but spoke with a similar amount of passion and articulation haha. Garry Neville knows what he’s talking about. Have you ever been to an Arab state? Have you spoken to women there? (Trying to learn some Arabic would help). Have you thought that perhaps they truly believe that they need a man guardian because that’s what Allah wants? You’ll be surprised how wrong you are and patronising it is, by thinking that you know better about what’s good for them than themselves. If I’m not wrong, you’re from Hull and the vast majority of your neighbours voted to legalise racism in 2016 and to put a PM in Downing Street who calls those Qatari “poor women” (they’re actually very very rich. Not the foreign ones though) - letterboxes; then perhaps we shouldn’t really judge them. I think our dear leader is actually taking notes on how to rule a country.

One more thing… when we were selected to host the World Cup in around 1960 even being gay was illegal. The treatment of our hero’s even (Alan Turing for example) was so appalling that they chose to kill themselves over suffering as criminal test bunnies.
@Sabundy
@Sabundy 2 жыл бұрын
Mate ....your nonsense about "contrarians" and "whataboutism" are all just that. Nonsense. Those are idiotic tactics thought up by conservatives as a way to weave away anyone pointing out their hypocrisy and double standards. And that is as ever the case here. Here's the thing......I agree with you about Qatar. They never should have been given it based on FIFA's own supposed rules and values. But the problem as ever is that even if we apply the moral standard to Qatar.....which it most assuredly fails...... then that same moral standard has to be applied equally across the board to all countries. And you know damn well that it never will be. Especially when it concerns Western countries. If we actually applied moral standards that disqualified countries from hosting the FIFA world cup....as well as other major sporting events .....then the US should not be allowed to host it either given their military actions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. The invasions, bombings of civilians and long occupations of these countries should by itself disqualify the US from hosting major sporting events. To say nothing of the fact they have the largest percentage of the population in jail of any country in the world. Most of those people being black. Who are forced to work for next to nothing in the US prison system making products for many American companies. But we both know damn well that the "rules" will only be applied to Qatar because it's a non Western, non white country. And that's one of the main reasons people like you advocate for it against Qatar even though you would never so for the US or other such Western countries. And you can spin that any way you want but it's bald faced hypocrisy. So....since clearly there are no standards (except for double standards) and clearly the rules are not applied to everyone equally then there is no point complaining about the ridiculousness of the FIFA world cup being given to Qatar. And it's not as if FIFA actually gives a shit now do they? FIFA is corrupt as hell and only cares about money. And since the West long ago lost any and all credibility, as well as any moral high ground on anything..... anything the West says is just empty and hollow.

So, I'm kinda frustrated on FIFAs moral hypocrisy. So recently, the Kenyan FA got banned because our sports CS kicked out the FKF team due to corruption (I would be interested on what you think about it). Yet we were quickly banned despite the team in charge of Kenyan football clearly misappropriating funds given to them by our government, and not much being shown for it. So seeing how FIFA handled that, yet refuses to acknowledge the corruption that lead to the Qatari World Cup, is honestly baffling

South Africia was boycotted and scantioned for apartheid. If individuals/players/teams/countries feel no strongly about Qatar, boycott and blackout game telecasts and advertising. No national who qualified will quit the tournament. Money, trade and politics are deeply interwoven. "Tailgating" - The coming together of throngs of people to eat, drink, sing, celebrate, dance, tell stories pre and post game. Usually in open areas like parks, parking lots. @@MrTsogl How do you know that people aren't morally outraged by one country attacking its neighbour? What interests are being threatened? Why are they threatened right now if definitely not because of the war? Shutting off Russian imports might hurt European interest in the short-term. But as one of the biggest markets in the world, the EU has money to buy those products from elsewhere. In contrast, Russia's economy is too corrupt, politicised and energy-focused to not be hurt by sanctions. Who would have the same money to sell their fossile fuels to if 800 million Europeans turn away? Putin was asking that same question, although interestingly he never asked how would US doing horrible things in Asia allow Russia doing horrible things in Ukraine? If he condemns one, then he should condemn the other and not order the attack, shouldn't he? Or how only the US taking part in the Syrian civil war would destroy the country, but not when Russia helps Assad bomb his own country back into the Stone Age? Or how the Azeri-Armenian conflict is a century old, started by Soviet meddling that Putin is oh so nostalgic for, and as a proxy war between Russia and Turkey for a strategic upper hand in the Caucasus, Russia extremely cares about? I don't know whether you deliberately or subconciously did it. But good job mindlessly repeating Russian propaganda.

I used to work in Dubai in the travel industry for the Abu Dhabi government. Part of my job was entertaining dignitaries from all the EMEA states. I have personally seen some very unsavoury acts from high ranking Qatar officials as well as their counterparts from Saudi. Things against the law in both their own state and the UAE, things so abhorrently against Islam that you simply wouldn't believe me if I told you. I've also had to spend time in Qatar and have witnessed such blatant disregard for human life it would shock even the hardest of deniers. Trust me when I say awarding them the World Cup had nothing whatsoever to do with football and everything to do with money. During the bid there was a steady influx of officials heading into the UAE for meetings with just about anybody who had anything to do with infrastructure or simply wanted a slice of the pie. Qatar should have never been awarded the WC.

It was mainly rich Saudis, crossing the border so that they could get drunk ... then going back across the border to resume their role as the judgmental muslim that hates booze. It didn't help that she was extremely beautiful, in her early 20s ... but she managed to fend them off, on her own, in a foreign country thousands of miles from home. The SA and Brazil world cups led to Governments burning slums and displacing or worse thousands of residents to build stadiums and roads that were worthless afterwards and wasted fortunes, then Russia, now Qatar.. Its decades now since a World Cup you could watch with a clear conscience. Mainstream media seemed to think one sentence about the issues in Qatar and then an "on with the game" attitude was OK but I'm so pleased to see someone stick their neck out and say NO, its not OK. Great video. There can never be enough spotlights on corruption in sport. FIFA definitely needs reform. In the world cup host selection process I would like to see all FIFA members have their votes made public and they are forced to justify their decisions and answer questions from reporters. This would not hide all corruption but could provide some accountability. Also, the notion of the transformative power of sport leading to substantial changes in a country is complete BS. Look around the world when major sporting events happen there are little to no changes in social policy in the host venue. Yes, Qatar will likely be on its best behavior during their world cup but nothing will actually change.

28:30 As a brown, mixed-race South American whose Masters dissertation was all about criticising eurocentrism, I agree with you. Some people focus so much on the West's discriminatory attitudes, they forget even countries/cultures/regions traditionally preyed upon by Western powers are also riddled with discriminatory customs. Then again, one could point out that Russia is pretty fucked up in its attitudes towards LGBTQ+ and people of colour. I recall one Russian minister (or someone working for a ministry) advising Russian women (and women specifically) not to have sexual relations with dark-skinned foreigners. Furthermore, anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes aren't just widespread, they're institutionalised. And that's not to mention that the 2018 Cup was overseen by Putin himself; nowadays only far-right freaks say anything supportive of him, but let's not forget that, in 2018, Putin was already the guy who made moves against Ukrainian sovereignty (such as the annexation of a tiny piece of land called Crimea). But the 2018 Cup happened nonetheless, the French probably remember it quite fondly, and I do recall even the English getting super excited about it too. I wonder... if England happens to win in Qatar, will the British media still call it the Cup of shame - or will they remember it as their country's greatest football glory in more than half a century? (of course, this doesn't mean Alfie's criticism isn't true. It's just food for thought)

By any metric of logic it makes zero sense for Qatar to host a World Cup. Nevermind the politics of it, but all this infrastructure being built is the most wasteful thing ever done in the anals of human history, bar none. Can you just imagine the billions of dollars being spent on something that would be completely useless after the fact. Not even talking about the stadiums only, but the roads, hotels, catering infrastructure, etc, etc. Therefore, there can be only ONE conclusion: someone at FIFA, and probably quite a lot of people at FIFA were bribed. Just gonna correct you on something. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are NOT South East Asian countries. They are South Asian countries. South East Asia = 🇲🇾🇸🇬🇮🇩🇹🇭🇵🇭🇲🇲🇻🇳🇱🇦🇰🇭🇧🇳. Otherwise, great video as always!

Australia should host a World Cup. Already has stadiums capable of hosting 60,000 plus like Accor Stadium, MCG, SCG, so many stadiums.

You'd need a pair of binoculars to watch football at one of those cricket stadiums

I'm a Muslim and I can't believe this guy just tried to compare racism to LGBT people not being allowed Bro that stuff isn't allowed in our religion while I don't agree on the penalties that come with being one of them you have to respect what the Quran says

Look at Shariah, it is there for the protection of 6 things: Religion Life: no murdering, etc. Property: no theft, usury, etc. Lineage: no premarital sex, adultery, polyandry, homosexuality Intellect: no intoxicants or gambling Honor Homosexual acts is in clear violation of 4 and possibly 6 if premarital. Look, there are people in society that have NO problem with consenting premarital sex, or harmless drinking alcohol, etc. It is so commonplace especially in the West, but these are also against Islam. You can go ahead and do it, but it is against the teachings of the Quran. Also, it is not just homosexuality but it is also sodomy and certain other perversion people of Lot did. Two halal married people cannot have anal sex. With that said, muslims should not ostracize or insult those who sin, we should forgive and help if they are genuine. Allahu A'lam

Any type of discrimination, is still discrimination. Doesn't matter if it was written in the Qur'an or in my 5 year old's notebook, it's still discrimination.

Bro, it doesn't matter, would you say its okay if The bible said to eliminate all muslins? Of course not, same thing with The quran, being a religion is not a "get out of jail free card" for being a cun'

A Winter World Cup in November and December doesn't help Domestic Football. It is the battle of Club vs Country.

Hey Alfie, great video but the geography teacher in me feels the need to point out that at the 15 minute mark, all of the countries listed where migrant workers come from are South Asian nations, not from Southeast Asia. Two very different regions with different cultures and history. I have seen many of your videos and am sure you know the difference, but many viewers might not! Thanks!
