Күн бұрын

Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Dr. Bjørn Lomborg discuss the present sense of impending doom that has swept the western world- and specifically today's young people. Together they break down the ideas of social credit and easy activism, and paint the picture of a world we can strive for, without the demonization and destruction of the one we currently inhabit.
Bjørn Lomborg is a Danish author, having written numerous books on climate change such as “False Alarm,” “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” and “How to Spend $75 Billion to Make the World a Better Place.” He is the president of the think tank Copenhagen Consensus Center that focuses on doing the most good, for the most people, with increasingly limited budgets. Previously, Lomborg was the director of the Danish government's Environmental Assessment Institute.
Dr. Peterson's extensive catalog is available now on DailyWire+: utm.io/ueSXh

I am a teacher and this resonates. I have been increasingly concerned that we are presenting a doom and gloom future to our students. But i then realised that every topic I teach is really a good news story it just needs to be presented as such. Poverty worldwide is reducing so why only focus on the remaining global inequality when the story is that we are moving towards a better future. Our students need to see a future that is positive as well as challenging. Thanks for this discussion its bang on.

Things are getting WORSE.. ELECTRICITY IS NOW UNRELIABLE AND MY COUNTRY PAYS NEARLY THE MOST IN THE WORLD AND WE HAVE EVERY SUBSTANCE IN ABUNDANCE HERE.. People are absolutely suffering and DYING BECAUSE VULNERABLE PEOPLE CANT HEAT AND COOL THEIR HOMES.. We got rid of all coal powered plants and actually powered our entire state with renewables for over 18 minutes a few months ago.. so at any stage renewables are being used due to everyone having solar panels AND YET THE COST FOR POWER IS HURTING PEOPLE.. AND BUSINESS.. ITS NOT CHEAPER.. ITS GOING TO GO UP OVER 50% in the next few months and it’s a DISASTER! The world climate summit concluded the biggest issue is STORAGE AND THERE IS NO WAY TO STORE ENOUGH POWER FOR CITIES NOW.. AND DISASTERS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN because coal powered plants are not being maintained and most are closing and ENTIRE CITIES ARE GOING TO BE STUFFED BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE PLAN B.. THERE IS NO PLAN TO POWER OUR COUNTRY AND THIS KNEE JERK REACTIONS IS A TOTAL DISASTER.. There is no sensible plan and people are dying now.. it’s bad..

I really appreciate this dialog. MY first reaction to this conversation was to think again about nature. I was born in northeastern New Mexico. In those days we didn't have cellphones, 4-wheelers, nor email. Everyone on farms and ranches everyone started working as soon as they could walk. You grew into harder and more complicated work. Most of these tasks were performed outside. As a consequence, I literally spent hundreds of hours outside. Many of those tasks were performed horseback. My father gave me my first horse when I was 7 years old. In the following years I worked 4 different ranches, two of them exceeded 100000 acres. I have seen places back in the mountains that only a few people have seen even to this day. The point is that I lived out in nature most of my waking hours. Even to this day I can sit on the porch to relax and observe nature. One of the things I have learned that there are certain actions that are dangerous because there are rules that make things work in nature. Be mean with a horse and the horse will eventually buck and otherwise rebel. Be patient and kind to a horse, the horse will like you. Another rule is that if you go out at night in the winter, you need more clothing than you do in the summer. Ignore this rule and you might end up dead. Obey the rules, nature is more kind to you. Another rule is that plants breathe out oxygen. We breathe out carbon. Get rid of carbon, the plants will die. Then people will die because the plants are giving us oxygen. And so on, so obey the rules and you will probably live a long productive life.

That was so depressing to me back then, and to think of all the stress I felt for so long as a result of climate rhetoric, which turned out to be a lie, makes even more depressed to think of what kids these days must be feeling as the climate alarmism has grown exponentially since I was their age. No wonder so many young people feel hopeless and suicidal, and all over a damn lie.

It broke my heart and I remember walking around apoloising to all the animals out in the garden. For years I was always depressed and never achieved anything because I thought "what's the point?" Then I started listening to other voices. Voices other than my peer group, the media and the mainstream. These other voices were mostly libertarian and conservative talk shows on AM radio. Rush Limbaugh, Neal Boortz, Shawn Hannity. They all helped me "unlearn" the leftist insanity. I got sober, went to college, got my degree, changed careers..... essentially learning how to employ my critical thinking skills.....I also began seeking Jesus. Thank you. I love these conversations. Perhaps if we have a world full of guilt-ridden people, we can be more easily controlled. Guilt and fear can mobilize a great deal of force and we're seeing that on the end of tyranny. Perhaps the overwhelming guilt is a direct result from our collective divorce from God. And perhaps we require an updated relationship with God. But to have no relationship seems almost collectively suicidal to me.

I love the optimistic perspective, but with all due respect, the reason why Northern European countries can afford to reforest is because they now exploit cheap wood from my country (Romania) and other similarly corrupt and poorer countries. In most statistics Romania and Eastern European countries in general aren't usually included, because we don't gather data the same way (as efficiently , detailed etc) as the West. So I am always skeptical of both sides of the argument when it comes to ecology, and would really like to see the data these statements are based on. I have to admit that I am not familiar with this guest's work and it is something I still need to look into.

Europe has been importing wood from all over the world for centuries. It started with having to build navies and merchant fleets, and moved onto houses, tools, furniture (teak, mahogany, pine etc.). Romania is not the only example. But, after benefitting from deforesting other countries for centuries, European activists are now lecturing those same countries about reforestation or (an idiotic term) “rewilding.” Apparently, any copse of trees (no matter how small) is recreating the forests that once covered Europe. The little furry critters so beloved of urban folks will somehow repopulate those new “forests” and life will be a Disney movie. Not very realistic.

Because nowadays objective reality doesn't really exist, didn't you know? Just one's feelings towards what they believe is true. There are no facts, because every fact is, in fact, a product of patriarchal oppression in the past few centuries or so and, therefore, reality is the modus operandi of a tyrannical system. The old facts are tyrannical! Bring them down, destroy them all! And yet, all of those that propose this kind of nonsense never act on their new definition of what is real - I never saw a single one of them trying to float outside of a 20th floor window because, y'know, gravity is an expression of white-male patriarchal oppression since 1687. And therefore it's just a tool for oppression, but it's not really real. The tragedy of it all is that there are actual people that do believe in all of this nonsense and they are now the gatekeepers for handling out PhD's.

A small technical comment, if I may, because I, and I'm sure others, never want to miss a word. Dr. Peterson sometimes leans forward, (for example at 50:11) at which point the sound changes. I've observed this on some of his other podcasts as well. That presumably means the microphone is above his head and ends up behind it when he leans forward. Would a second overhead (forward) microphone or a lavalier clip be useful here?

Because they were running out of trees they converted to water power and eventually electricity provided by hydro and fossil fuels. The same thing occured around Lake Tahoe. With the use of fossil fuels the Forrest's have recovered.

I work with ages 0 to 25 as a psychotherapist. More and more the adolescents and young adults come in with a total lack of meaning, a pessimistic even anti natalist philosophy, a view that everything they do is meaningless in the face of our supposed impending doom. At 14 they are making decisions to never have kids, to never marry or have a long term relationship. I assess for negative emotions of course but I also assess for positive. Even after we reduce some of the negative they must learn or relearn to expericne positive...to seek them. They often can't remember the last time they felt awe, inspiration, gratitude, intimacy even just feeling interested in something. there are times on my drive home where I can not hold back a few tears for them. More and more I believe this youth mental health crisis we keep hearing about is being taught to them. Haidt and his Co author in coddling of the American mind made a wonderful point how much of what is taught to youth about how to think is the exact opposite of what cognitive behavioral therapy does to reduce mental suffering. What's worse is I must be very very careful what I say or ask a client to reflect upon lest I get tattled on and draw the ire of our professional organizations which are now totalitarian institutions promoting a single narrative.

32:30 I think the reason it's easy for young people to get behind this is because it is made to shine as a simple path to being "virtuous". They are given an extremely simple and shallow understanding of the climate change issue, pointed only in one direction, given an enemy (anyone who doesn't agree that we need to reduce all Co2 right this instance), and then they are a morally good person. If they were given the full picture right from the start without the hypocricies (china overpoluting everyone by a large margin), that nuclear is an important thing to develop to manage this, and that humans are better at adapating to change rather than forcing everyone into lower living standards, then I don't think nearly as many would become esnared by the nihilistic environmental religion. Ah, Peterson added a decent bit to round out this point asvwell at 36:55

First my criticism: Dr. Peterson, I strongly recommend that you wear a microphone on your lapel, because using a fixed-position microphone (likely a boom mic) overhead and your tendency to move about (even while sitting) takes you in and out of its range of recording your voice with clarity and at a consistent level. Now, my praise: THIS interview and the facts presented therein is exactly what people everywhere need to hear and be inspired by. I'm more encouraged about the future, provided that Bjorn's ideas/suggestions are accepted/internalized/acted upon. Keep doing what you're doing, for you ARE making the world a better place. Many thanks.

Phenomenal conversation! I absolutely love it and find it to be poetic. I’ve been busy with projects and the holidays. Playing catch-up w/Jordan’s KZbins. Btw Jordan you are looking extremely handsome in your sharp suits. Thank you ✝️❤️👍🏻

@@davepeters3317 I respectfully disagree with you. 8 million is probably underestimated because several tribes living in the jungles aren’t documented or counted. The problem is not with over population or land shortages. There is plenty of land for everyone to own acres. The problem is and always has been greed and mismanagement. Every time there is a major catastrophe around the world, governments and citizens donante what amounts to billions upon billions of dollars for food, shelter/rebuilding infrastructure etc. Thing is, corrupt politicians/leadership fill their own pockets and bank accounts. Hence, poverty issues will always be with us because greed will always be with us. Furthermore, nothing that is of value has to do with fake religion. Having faith, love, admiration, servitude, trust and a loving relationship with our one and only creator Almighty Father God and Savior Jesus Christ is believing and loving beyond ourselves. You are actually misunderstanding intelligence or sophistication because it’s actually understanding everything in the most simplest of terms that evolves to the highest forms of sophistication and of intellectual thoughts. If someone is sophisticated or intelligent they don’t have to announce or advertise it. It’s like love or beauty, it just is. The Bible, the true WORD is very simple. Jesus Christ spoke simple yet profoundly. He dressed humbly but was and is the King of Kings. He loves us unconditionally and just as we are and yet many reject such pure and beautiful love. Most blindly seek and drink from wells without water when Jesus Christ is offering the water of life so you can never be thirsty. Narrow, humility and simple is the righteous way. The Bible is very simple and to the point. It is written in simple but beautiful, prophetic and poetic words. The Bible is the most valuable and important book ever written. Anyway, I wish you happiness, love, and peace be with you. Jesus Christ loves you. He died on the cross for everyone rich or poor. Humanity is wasting precious time hating and fighting. Seek God ✝️🙏🏻🕊

Full respect to the Doctor, and Bjorn. Here's my take on this, for what it's worth. I feel that a problem is just how very much more wealthy that humanity has to be before it effectively cares about the planet. Even, It seems, a majority of the 'wealthy enough' still don't care about the environment and animals. So I don't see that idea as being sound...making everyone on the planet wealthy enough so that they become custodians of our planet, rather than destroyers. As the 'Doc' says, it comes down to individuals choosing good over evil, aiming to be what they can be, for the Good. I believe that this 'individual strategy' would inherently bring humanity's numbers down, thus ceasing to cause too great a stress on the planet which supports us.

In the discussion of the "zone of proximal development," the answer is very easy. Children are learning these things in a classroom. This is to be taught in the kitchen by their mother or in the garage by their father. Mother says we need six pieces of pie out of one pie. Dad says we need six equal lengths of this board. Need to stop trying to teach practical life skills to children without them "doing it"! A classroom is no place for this type of learning.
