AMAZING EPISODE!! You gotta invite Stella again, I feel represented!!! Stella was incredible, and super funny, her cosplay is beautiful. Danny and Nick talking about BL with so much excitment was something I want to be a regular corner in the podcast forever because their takes are wild and funny as fuck. About danmei (chinese BL novels and donghua)... what Stella said wasn't inaccurate, but it's not the whole thing. Fantasy danmei splits into two categories, xianxia and wuxia. While xianxia is considered high fantasy, wuxia is low fantasy and is actually (if I'm looking for a comparison) more similar to how shounen works in terms of power systems and plot. Heaven Official's Blessings (tgcf), Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (mdzs), and Husky and His White Cat Shizun (erha) are considered xianxia, high fantasy. It's not exactly equivalent to western fantasy because xianxia is rooted in Chinese culture, and has elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, as well as cultural aspects that are easy to notice when you watch/read the content. Cultivation itself is a Taoist concept that allows the cultivator to gain marital powers through meditation and cultivation of Qi. Different danmei novels treat it in different ways. MXTX, the author of TGCF and MDZS, likes to mix and match stuff from Taoism and Buddhism and make up a lot of stuff. However, calling it fantasy like the western kind feels a bit like it's doing a disservice to the culture that is behind xianxia and wuxia novels. Stella IS correct by saying that the flowing robes and long pretty hair are the identifiers--the authors know their audience. I do however HIGHLY recommend reading or watching xianxia and wuxia, even if they aren't danmei, because the concepts are super cool and the characters are awesome. Long explaining paragraphs but I had to get it out. AWESOME podcast episode, I laughed so much I got a stomach ache. LOVE YOU NICK AND DANNY!!!
