What I really like about Dartmoor is how the tone and the atmosphere match the mood the whole place. All the family is gloomy, the fact it is lifeless makes it seem like everything is wearing out which is what is happening to Providence - it feels like it is nearing its end and the oldest of the partners, the person who has seen it all unfold, is the final partner left.

Probably my favorite little tidbit of story from Dartmoor is when you impersonate the lawyer and go over the targets finances then get to tell her that Edwards has taken everything she had worked so hard to build and maintain, the family fortune, the legacy of her dynasty and even the manor itself.

In my opinion/hottake, World of Assassination is peak Hitman. It has a great story that doesn’t ignore any of the previous entries and instead builds on it, has great maps (mostly), and has the possibility for limitless enjoyment and puzzle solving with the unique assassinations and I love going through each level trying to kill my targets in every possible way, it really is a great trilogy of games.
@cartermanjohn7702
@cartermanjohn7702 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but it lacks a lot of what the previous games had. Atmosphere and character. Almost everyone one of the WOA maps feels kinda lifeless, and even the good ones like Berlin and Isle of Sgail don’t hold a candle to any of the missions in Contracts or Blood Money. I just don’t feel anything while playing WOA now.
@PhantomSnake84

It absolutely is peak Hitman in terms of gameplay. The only flaw to me is that I miss the dark, gloomy atmosphere and soundtrack of Contracts. Sure every single level in an entire trilogy of games shouldn't be dark, rainy and depressing because it would get stale but I'm just not a fan of the more wacky, comedic elements in a lot of the WOA maps.

I wish they'd done a cooler setting for Colorado, like our beautiful mountains. Have it take place in a ski town, and give the player some really unique kill opportunities, such as pushing them off a chairlift, crushing them with a snowcat, or fencing off areas to force them into extreme terrain, where they'd be isolated or possibly die from like an avalanche or messing up on slopes. i think that could've been much cooler.

I disagree with him on that one. Yes, not every level needs to be the same... But that doesnt change the fact the mission is extremely linear (well thats obvious) and repetitive. Take A New Life for example... Kotti says he considers it the best mission of the series, and I do so as well. So, maps dont need to be massive to be cool, we agree on that.

Seeing Santa Fortuna ranked so low hurt my soul. You can feed your target to a hippo. You can turn people into cocaine bricks. You can ram your target with a submarine. And above all, the whole point of the mission is picking off the heads of a freaking drug cartel! I know you’re basically doing the same thing in A Vintage Year, but I never played that so I was blown away by the concept when I played Three Headed Serpent. The jungle sections were done really well in my opinion, and especially the cartel mansion. The whole time I was there I felt this ever present sense of pervading danger and urgency, and that was enhanced by the music that plays when you’re hunted there. For me, Whittleton Creek was the most forgettable mission in the trilogy.

Great job on that tier list, I appreciate being thorough and objective with every map. One thing I can't help but disagree with is the Isle of Sgail. Upon my first experience with Hitman, I too hated it for being too big and convoluted. Though eventually I grew to like this map: it just demands commitment to learn all ins & outs. And when you do, traversing Isle of Sgail becomes incredibly satisfying. Besides, the whole castle theme here is hands down the best in the series, and all conspiracy babble aside - I absolutely enjoy local atmosphere. But hey, it mostly boils down to personal preference with favorite maps, so it's ok ;)

Strongly disagree on Isle of Sgail. It’s an excellent map when you really discover some of the navigational tricks. Its escalation challenges are where the map really shines. It’s an excellent venue for contracts. It is honestly too big to use the entire map in one mission, but the various areas themselves are interesting to utilize and aren’t just annoying wide open areas like the Marrakesh market. It has its problems but I think it has immense replay value as a map. I much prefer it to sprawling maps like Haven & Santa Fortuna. Routing is its own challenge in Sgail which I like
@KorporalNoobs
@KorporalNoobs Жыл бұрын
With Freelancer I would also chime in on Colorado, which is actually quite tense and a nice change from the rest when you have max. 2 targets. Isle has a few weird quirks in its Freelancer layout, which I either like if it is randomized or dislike if it is a constant. It blocks the main pipe to the glass cube via a constant rotation of 2 council members, which is a real pain.
@courier6960
@courier6960 Жыл бұрын
The big problem with isle of sgail for me is the lack of variance and opportunity in the targets routes. Their ordinary routes alone are bad enough with not enough interesting opportunities to get them alone or for interesting kills, ESPECIALLY for suit only, but all of the interesting kills and ways of manipulating their routes into doing interesting things ALWAYS requires you to use a disguise and knock people out to actively do things. The cloud serpent? Blake nathanial The Phoenix ceremony? You can light the money pit (literally the only way to manipulate a targets route) but you need to actively wear the outfit for it to happen The council meeting? Jebediah Block Entrapping the constant with the poison pill schematics? Need an architect outfit and to get the schematics from the the guy by knocking him out The funeral? Need to wear Janus’s robes (and effectively knock out or kill 3-4 people to put it on The initiates? Need to Don the outfit and collect the tokens yourself None of these opportunities can be done without a disguise, and none of them EVER even move slightly on their own. The NPC’s just stand around waiting forever as if to say “please do something with me” instead of what they are meant to represent, that of: “I’m an actual character who needs to and is going to accomplish something of interest tonight”. There’s no time or physical pressure to do something because you can never miss out on anything or have them get in your way! This is all despite how easily they could have had these opportunities kicked into motion with other ways and how other people were already set up to take the roles 47 does in these anyway! I think they really learned and understood this mistake with Hitman 3 because most, if not all of the opportunities in missions could be done without disguises and by manipulating the environment in other ways. It can be facilitated by a disguise or by setting things up and placing objects. The only notable opportunity where 47 HAS to take the role to truly get things moving is the murder mystery one in Dartmoor, but it’s understandable and preferable to an extent. That, and on top of it all initial infiltration in this map is way too easy, you just step off of a boat and the rich people let you in with open arms. It should have been an experience of having to pass or go around background checks and stations to get into the party proper. It should have given and enforced the purpose of Lucas Grey and Olivia Hall as being characters with actual roles to play rather than the story being and feeling like an entirely separate thing going on. Hall should have been able to forge a background check or bypass their security systems with your physical assistance, Grey could have played an active role being an ACTUAL person you interact with in opportunities and infiltration. It’s all such a waste and if there was one mission I wish had an entire game’s worth of time reworked on it, it would be Isle of Sgail, because the concept alone was so cool yet so wasted due to major time and budget constraints.

Cool list. Hokkaido is my personal favourite mission. On the first playthrough it was really fun figuring out ways to access different parts of the map and find cracks in the AI controlled enviroment, and it's a very compact and nice to traverse map once you have figured out how to move between the different sections. Hokkaido together with Sapienza is basically my Hitman comfort food. Whenever I want a nice quick game of Hitman I can pick some contract mission set in those maps and I will always have fun playing it.

Very interesting plot point about the suspicion meter in H2SA. Personally I absolutely hated the randomness and vastly prefer WoA’s deterministic UI but I can’t deny that it adds a lot of tension. One cool thing about the trilogy is that they give you the option to toggle any of these ui elements off at any time. This includes the mini map, npc icons, suspicion indicators and instinct. The game is still a hundred percent playable this way and it adds a little of the tension you were talking about in those games

This is a well put together video mainly because I can easily understand your explanations for why you prefer certain maps over the others, even when I liked or disliked those maps more than you did. I think the effort was worth it. Well done. I love the WOA trilogy as a whole but it was the 1st and only part of the series I've played start to finish, and even then I technically started with Hitman 2 while playing Season 1 within it. Absolution was my 1st hitman game and I never finished it (I didn't hate it, but stealth games at the time couldn't keep my interest). I also only played half of Blood Money (I enjoyed it, but for no good reason I never finished it).

My Tierlist (The Short Version): A - Sapienza, Paris, Hokkaido, Miami Meh - Almost everything else Shouts for mentioning Ground Zeroes - they did so many good things with one map. I don't hear it mentioned much, but it's still one of my favourite stealth experiences (demo? mini-game? - however you want to define it) of recent decades: short but replayable, the game mechanics felt tight, and it was lean to the point of having no filler. In fact, overall I think I got more enjoyment out of GZ than the hours put into Phantom Pain.

Good video. I don't think it's particularly clickbaity, the tier list format is popular because it works well, so it makes a lot of sense here. The biggest ones i would disagree on would probably be Chongqing and Dubai. Chongqing doesn't use the setting well imo, and they should have chosen between the apartments and the underground base instead of trying to do both. I think it also suffers from annoying placement of pipes and ledges. Dubai to me feels like it somewhat fails to communicate the skyscraper setting, especially in the penthouse where it's basically just a mansion inside the skyscraper.

When I first played Hitman 3 I had no idea about the Carpathian Mountains but around the Berlin level I thought to myself "You know it would be cool to see a level take place on a train but that's far to linier to happen in a Hitman game" and boy I was shocked when I opened the train car the first time especially since the game purposefully hides the fact your on a train. The level is simply and ultimately not exactly what I would have wanted from a train based level but at the end of the day its easily one of my favorite maps due mostly to how I perfectly called its existence

Great video, even though I somewhat disagree with many of your takes. Mainly on the H1 maps praise (My favorite is 2) and Paris in particular being S tier. I think Paris is a fine map, but definitely wouldn't say it utilizes all it's areas fully or in interesting ways, even compared to much bigger maps like Mumbai, Sgail, (Santa Fortuna?). Still I really enjoy the debate around map sizes and balancing world building with tediousness/replayability, and the way you compare the trilogy to older titles is cool. Also IOI for God's sake fix the lighting

i must be the only person in the world who likes colorado. i liked it for what it was. a highly hostile environment was a breath of fresh air from all the public areas like paris and bangkok. even before hitman 2's update where they added tall grass and made it more tolerable for players, i still liked the map. only thing i didn't like was that exiting through the basement was mandatory, until they changed it. idk. maybe i play too much absolution

I'd have some minor quibbles with a few, but mostly I agree. The two standouts where I find myself disagreeing are Chongqing and Isle of Sgail - and I'd basically use your same reasoning with my ranking, but with the locations switched: I find Chongqing confusing, random, and disjointed, and Sgail as more interesting and tightly tied together and easier to navigate and keep track of where I am.

Despite not liking tier list videos, I wanted to hear your opinion for these maps, so of course, I watched from start to finish. Plus, I basicially agree to all the things you've said in the video. Special mention to the "Isle of Sgail", since I always have the thought "Well, it's the last level (Hitman 2), of course they have to go out with a bang!". But no... every time I start this map, I do some random stuff while trying to just be done with it, since it can't really hold my attention. Than I think that I might miss something... but no, after starting it again, it's the exact same thing.

Damn, you like Berlin? I always thought it was a bad idea to do that, until they could do it right, meaning being hunted by other agents. Here they are practically normal security - it was a big letdown for me. Made it seem like 47 is the only competent agent in ICA. Not mention I hate they killed Grey this way in the story (also wasted opportunity), but that's another story...

Dartmoor still has the best kill, in all Hitman. It's when you frame the Husband for his own murder. Then you ask for the file, and Lady Carlyle realizes she's talking to Agent 47. Rather than rat you out, she willingly gives you the file, asks you to get Providence good, and throws herself off the balcony. In that moment, I felt really sorry for the old girl. But it was good to see one of your targets die with some dignity. IO should do an Agatha Christie type game. It'd be a runaway hit.

for me Mendoza is very high tier defo a high S , still probably below sapienza and Hokaido and tbh most of it is due to how amazing my first playthrough was first off i love the maps atmosphere , the music ,scenery , colours etc but my fav part is the hidden mission story and i was lucky enough to get it first time its the one where you do the tour of the winery , but instead of killing vidal in the machines , you hold back and end up stealing another disguise and taking wine to the secret meeting below the House in probably the coolest moment in hitman 3 for me , Don yates orders his guard to execute your other target vidal , and then diana is take and held hostage you then go up and save Diana and prepare a really cool ambush where you can get a really cool kill and then you change into 47s signature suit and do the dance with diana to finish the mission i mainly just love how the map is entirely free , but it has this almost intended / "canon" route and mission story within it that you have to discover entirely independently since it doesn't show up in the mission story screen until after you discover it , sure , repeat playthroughs haven't been as good as my first but i still love mendoza

38:52 as someone with 97% in Landslide (I just need to discover 2-3 more locations) I have a few counterarguments. I believe the bigger map makes the map feel greater, because that’s the full town, and he’s a candidate for being the mayor. If it was just the beach area, we wouldn’t have Above the Law, in my opinion, one of the best mission stories of the first game (not the best out of the trilogy, as I love the story of the game.) lastly, I don’t think the Icon is better than Landslide. It’s cool, and has a big area, but it just doesn’t feel as good as something like Landslide or House Built on Sand. All of those have things that make the targets seem like bad people, especially Marco Abiatti, whilst all that makes Bosco evil is that he drains funds from a company and is mean behind scenes. Nothing compelling enough to make me interested. If the constant was just mean to his operatives and nothing else, I wouldn’t be as driven to kill him.
@TheKotti

Almost all of the targets seem evil, which is why Bosco stands out. I get that the targets are terrible people so the players want to kill them, but what a wasted opportunity to not include a target the player does NOT want to kill and explore that angle.
@revilno
@revilno Жыл бұрын
@@TheKotti I feel like that would fit more in the main story, because the end of Hitman has 47 continue killing, but only killing people who are fully bad/evil. Bosco as a side mission is just boring, because when I did the mission, I found myself just killing Bosco and then doing some random things, the Bad Boy (elusive target in the icon) was more fun. But your idea of it is still good!

Great video Kotti, you are being too harsh on yourself. I have been following you since I think your AGDQ 2013 Dark Souls run, always appreciated your content and thoughts, you even helped me get into the WOA trilogy by just posting content on it. I guess if I were to have a critic of this video the only thing would be the times you mention a map is not good enough because it was released later on. Probably it is just me, because I got into WOA trilogy through Hitman 3 so everything is more fresh for me. I would not understand how it felt to go from the episodic releases of 2016 to Hitman 2's complete release, I just remember having disdain for it because episodic releases were so overdone at the time. Great video Kotti! Looking forward to see your content in the future as always. Hope you have a great day.
