Have you ever tried soaking or fermenting your feed - for any of your animals? I found that my chickens wasted much less and looked healthier when I soaked my feed overnight with a starter like apple cider vinegar or kefir\yogurt. Doing that cut my feed bill 25% to 50% - depending on the time of year. Now that I live up north, I don't soak feed for the ducks and geese in the winter (so the feed doesn't freeze), but I do feed them right next to buckets or tubs of water. In warm weather, they _really_ like wet feed.
@DaybirdAviaries6 жыл бұрын
I grow lots of sprouts and wheatgrass to feed to them but I've never tried fermenting any of the feed. Do you think it increases the protein content?
@kirstenwhitworth80796 жыл бұрын
I know that it makes several components more bioavailable and lit can leach out antinutrients in legumes. I do know my feed bill went down and my birds looked better,
@DaybirdAviaries6 жыл бұрын

Is this mix ok for bucks? I am researching and so many people have told me not to give anything except hay to bucks because of stones? I have only been feeding the sweet feed and hay. I am def going to try this for my goats. Cool video. Thanks.
@DaybirdAviaries2 жыл бұрын
Well, technically no. But I do. Bucks can develop urinary stones from too many minerals in grain. It has to do with the calcium and phosphorus ratios. Cog Hill recently talked a bit about it. Jason said there are special mixes he buys to feed his bucks that prevent that. I've been using this mix for many years now with no problem but that doesn't mean that you won't have issues. Check with Rose at Wholesome Roots farm. She's the goat guru.

How many cups a day per animal do they eat?
@juliatrebnio90904 жыл бұрын
For one goat in the morning and evening you could give them one cup and a half but if you see they are gaining to much weight then lower it to one cup.
@Rebbecca19834 жыл бұрын
@@juliatrebnio9090 I wrote this about seven months ago but the person on the video never got in contact with me. I sort of figured it out but you’re right it’s about a cup per animal I can’t go too far or they will gain weight I just want them at a perfect weight for winter.Mine are Icelandic sheep and they need very little grain.
@Rebbecca19834 жыл бұрын

@DaybirdAviaries3 жыл бұрын
Yes ma'am. It's equal amounts of whole oats, black oil sunflower seeds, alfalfa pellets, and the commercial goat feed of your choice. Basically, whatever is available to you: all stock, sweet feed, specialty feed. In the video, I used sweet feed but have since changed to ADM Dairy Goat Feed.

Do you think turkeys, and ducks would like this mix? I want goats, but we have chickens, turkeys, ducks and guineas. It would be nice if I could find a feed to supply most if not all of them what they need. All my poultry forage, though, so that's good. Even my broad breasted turkeys go crazy for bugs and grass seed.

ALL of mine will eat this. I'm sure it will work for you. However, you might want to keep oyster shells available for your layers.

Why doesn't anybody say how much and how often they feed each goat? And what about weathers and bucks? I heard they shouldn't have alfalfa nor sunflower seeds.
@DaybirdAviaries2 жыл бұрын
Bucks, weathers,and non milking does do not need any grain. Does in milk need one pound of grain for every pound of milk they produce.
