New subscriber, I have raised Nubians before when I was a kid we raised both Alpine's. We did have a few after I left home but I have gone to only Alpine's, bc they are more quiet and personal. But Nubians. We are here in Michigan and it gets cold and hot. I have been raising dairy goats for over 35 years. I love our Alpine's. My biggest doe is when not pregnant 190lbs, her now coming two year old daughter is 160lbs, my bucks when full grown are over 240lbs. My heavyist milker is 145lbs and has milked 4,891lbs in 305 days. Which is almost 3 gallons a day. Yes I bred for heavy milking lines. Yearling gives a gallon easily. Thank you for sharing. Till next time God Bless.

Where in Michigan? I live in Indiana and in February we plan on selling our house to purchase 20+ acres in southwest Michigan niles/buchanan area for our own farm.

We started with Nubians and have had them many years. We love our goats and appreciate them. I train the doelings to the stanchion as soon as I can and they are quiet milkers. Our girls milk is creamy and sweet, more sweet than store cows milk. I like that they get used to routines, and are highly food motivated. A big advantage to their size is being able to place a 6 quart bucket under their udders and milk. No short legged goats for us.

Yes! Their drive for food definitely makes them highly motivated and manageable. Even if one does sneak through the gate and heads for our fruit trees, we can shake a bucket and get them to come back running

We also like long legged goats, for the sake that they can reach the brush higher up on the trees

I love Nubians and the Nigerian Dwarfs are just the cutest. I took the best of both and raise Mini Nubians 🥰 because they're easier for me to handle, less feed and great milk production. I have my two full size Nubian Does a few ND and switch between the buck breeds.

Despite the crime in Nashville and Memphis, and Knoxville, I think Tennessee is one of the best states. 4 seasons, mountains, valleys, farmland, centrally located, and lots of people who homestead. Someday I hope and pray that I'll have 5-20 acres in Tennessee, so I can have some livestock. Thank you for sharing this about the Nubians. They seem like a great choice.

I have boer goats and want to add a milk goat to the flock. I want it for the family milk and maybe bottle lambs if I need them. Would a nubian be good for that?

Yes they would be good for that, but still use a proven milk doe line. I have 4 right now, one lost a kid but the other is producing from her first kidding more than 30 ounces x1 day. So we will see how well she does in her 3 kidding. The Lamacha-Nubian at 180# is producing 3/4 of a gallon x1 day with a teat that had been severely damaged by mastitis. The vet told me that teat would not come back, but it mostly did. I am hoping her two daughters will produce a gallon a day each.

You might want to try Lamacha-Nubians. They are great milk producers, probably as noisy as Nubians, but maybe a tad easier to manage than Nubians.

Lamacha just isn’t super common and I havnt been around them much.

​@LittleFarmLand Lamacha-Nubians are a cross breed. They have ears more like nubians and produce like Lamachas, sized like Lamachas (does can be 180#) many habits of Lamachas, cream slightly less than nubians. They can look like Saneens. But they are nice does when adults, but assertive once they realize they are the biggest does on the pasture. Like Lamachas, they like to bite other goats ears to make a point.

Similar, yes. Not exactly the same but I’ve found that diet plays a role in milk taste and it can even vary from one animal to the next even if breed and species is the same

I have Nubians…wish I would have gotten dwarfs goats instead. Nubians do have pros but the one thing(s) I totally dislike about them… is the noise… they are purposefully loud.. they scream for HOURS!!!!! Yes, they produce a good amount of milk. But I’m switching to another breed… I can’t take the constant screaming….not to mention they eat allot!!!! Id rather have a heard of dwarfs to get the milk I need. As far as meat goes… they are tasty lol lol lol I like boer goats too. Not loud just big. And I’m about to flip any of my goats. Even my 300 pounder boer goat.. good luck with your goats. Wish I knew but hindsight is 20/20…. By the way.. I feed them 3 times a day Chaffhaye and sweet feed with lil BOSS as well.
