@tronridermusic20452 жыл бұрын
Not really honestly, anything below mid g sounds pretty bad, but it really does work like a charm for the high notes, you don’t buy this mouthpiece for the lower register, you buy it for the crisp screaming high notes

@tronridermusic2045 A good mouthpiece should produce good tone regardless of the register. I think embouchure and breathing are most important. Maynard always sounded great, whether in the lower register, the upper register, or into the stratosphere.

Lynn and Blaise's truths >>> Ed's bs
@lynn954417 жыл бұрын
Hey Ed....... Playing in the upper register is mostly a matter of air/abs. When used as suggested, the XPiece and Reversible Rim encourage your playing apparatus to do all the right things with your air/chops/abdominals/intercostals/etc, no matter your current range or equipment... As Blaise mentions, 95% of all players use mouthpieces that are too big, so after a short period of time with the tools, you will likely go to a smaller mouthpiece without sacrificing any sound. Success correlates directly to how easily the player can give up conventional thinking, and embrace the MF Protocol.... It's a wonderful process, but can take place spontaneously, if you're open to same..... :)
@Edsvidhouse7 жыл бұрын
Blaise Bowman From my experiences with lead mouthpieces, I was told by teachers etc to only get one when my range is solid to avoid ruining any foundational technique. @BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's worth changing! I played on a Bach 1-1/2C for years, until I realized how awful it was. The XPiece serves everyone the same way, since it's molded around the MF Protocol. That's the beauty of the XPiece. You have the option keep using your normal mouthpiece, OR you chould adopt the XPiece as your main mouthpiece. Since the benefits of the XPiece/RR's relaxation carry over to other mouthpieces. Even if you play on the XPiece/RR only a few minutes a day, you'll still see amazing results.

Don’t switch until you try it and like it. I have studied with Roger Ingram (Lead for HC Jr. ,Maynard, and many others) 6 years and he would say the same thing
@jeffalfrd7 жыл бұрын
It's always worth trying something new, BUT take it from a guy who has been playing almost 30 years. While learning and developing your embouchure it's always best to start around a 3 to 7c depending on your style. That will help you develop your sound and technique really well, it helps build the muscles up and makes you sound so much better. I have a ton of mouth pieces for different uses on a wide range of horns. But if you go to a mouth piece that makes you lazy it will be hard for you to hit high notes in a piece of music that has a wide range from low c to double c. It's most times hard to change out a mouthpiece right in the middle of a sheet. Also it will change your tuning when you do. Best to practice a piece on one mouth piece learn where your slides need to be for tuning. Don't forget about sound!!!!! I played on a bach 6 when I first learned to play I was patient practiced and before long I could start from below the staff and go all the way to double c using just that mouthpiece. And it all sounded great. After I got older and learned how to control the tuning with my embouchure and by listening. I could change mouthpieces between sheets of music depending on need and horns and still have great tuning and great sound.

jeffalfrd thank you so much for the experienced info. I've been playing trumpet for about 7 years now on a 3c and now am the first chair trumpet in my band with pretty good upper register control and beautiful tone (according to my director). But I graduate this year and want to move to a more shallow cup, or at least one that is better for upper register as I go into college. Should I stick to the 3c and continue working or is it okay for me to move to a shallower mouthpiece? And if it's okay to change mouthpieces, what do you recommend?

F. Besson Brevete Kunstal here! arguably the best trumpet in existence to this very day! I currently love my Shilke 13A4A. Just beautiful for high range, but difficult to handle as a young player, but by deveral years of just using it, the double C comes out easy.

What mouthpiece should I be practicing on vs performing on? When is it appropriate to switch mouthpieces during a gig? Currently I practice and play gigs with a Bach 5c but I have a Yamaha 14a4a for when i'm fatigued or want to nail a high note. I feel like my overall tone sounds better on the Bach 5c, but I can get up higher with the 14a4a. Is the x-piece a gigging mouthpiece or just a tool for increasing your range? Sorry i have so many questions, thanks dude!

Primarily, the XPiece is a tool, a very good one. Though, I've had a lot of success using it as a primary piece as well. Learning to sound good on a small (note, not shallow) mouthpiece is one of the best things you can do in your trumpet career. I love my XPiece and play it daily

I use the Yamaha 14B4-GP with a gold plated rim. It was around $100, and it works pretty well

Great, now post videos of your playing in the double to triple G range please to verify the comparison between yours and what's recommended here!

I play a 7c what size would be good or is a 7c ok (I can only play a high a but I’m only 12)

Can you use this as a primary mouthpiece?
@aaronleblanc5407 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to find this as it would be great for a tool to help me gain my register but I can't find a place to buy it. I can play a high e with no problems but then I get airy so this would be great to have.

Colin Milch where do you get one?

How much does one of these cost?

So I just bought the X Piece and Reversible Rim combo and so far I have mixed feelings. So far I can barely get a sound out of the X Piece but when I go back to my regular mouthpiece it does seem to make me rely more on my air while playing. Also the Reversible Rim does seem to be helping also. I'm concerned about my lack of sound on the X Piece but I hope eventually I will develop a good sound on it. Any suggestions Blaise or Mr. Nicholson? Thanks...

I know this is very late, but I have three questions. Is this a good lead trumpet mouthpiece? Is there a gold plated one? Also how do I get one?

MovableFormula What he replied to someone was to dm Lynn Nicholson what’s the link and that he’ll send it to you. I’d link you but I don’t have facebook

I'm using a Schilke 6a4a is that a small mpc?
@jeffalfrd7 жыл бұрын
Wow yeah that is a very small schilke,. Refer to the mouthpiece guide for schilke it will really help. The most important thing is what you like and can play with everyone one is different, your teacher or tutor will know what is best for you. Switching mouth pieces while learning is not a good idea, but....... If your mouthpiece isn't working for you ask your teacher. They will know depending on lip dimensions and embouchure developing which is best for you in particular.

Can i use a 1/2 c mouthpiece?
@ianadair74287 жыл бұрын
i can already play a high c with a standard bach 3c. If i get this your telling me i can play up to a double C, or even higher?
@BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
If you use it properly yes.

What if i cut the rim off of an old 7c? Would this work similar to the reversible rim?
@BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
It would work similar, but only ~70% effective. The 7C has a sharp rim/bite which encourages tension. The Reversible Rim is designed specifically for chop relaxation and is much better of a teacher at playing high.
@sfcucumber14327 жыл бұрын
So we now know this is the best mouth piece ever, but less specifically what is the best mouthpiece size for playing high? Like a 3c?
@BlaiseBowman7 жыл бұрын
The XPiece! It's primarily a lead mpc, but you can use it for anything

For Blaise bowman and or Lynn Nicholson: I am not interested in trying out the mr protocol at this time, however, I still get pressure headaches and range problems. Will this mouthpiece do the trick?
