I'd rather spend $40 on groceries and $1000 on a good used 50 or more year old U.S. or British made instrument. No child deserves a horn that no one would enjoy playing. An instrument lie Trent demos would make a child think: "why did I ever want to play music in the first place". That goes with cheap woodwinds, percussion, and even keyboards as well. Buying a child a piece of junk to learn on? Well then you ought to feel cheap and guilty of shorting your child.

Here's my rule: "If you can make a good sound out of a crappy instrument, how much more in a good one."
@jmitterii24 жыл бұрын
1) A student will likely never make a good sound out of it; and instead frustrate them 1.5) and maybe so bad they can't stay in tune with the band. 2) Just because you can kind of make a decent sound, a professional musician who is playing for hours and hours in a day can't be tired in the first 10 minutes of playing a poorly made instrument. 2.5) Professional bands don't have time for the musician take several minutes to tune, and they can't risk it falling out of tune during a long performance. 3) Nobody student or professional wants to work harder than they need just to make "good" sounds. 3.5) And this eliminates them from playing more difficult pieces later on. Conclusion: That being said, there is reasons not to go insane either with something that's all hype... you need to test our the instrument, look at it, or have someone who knows what to look for look at it. $300 to $1000 is good... and for students, if you want to potentially save money: just rent the same value instrument in case they decide to go for a different instrument or no longer play.
@mattypants6 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, my $5500 trumpets valves were sticky too when I opened it up for the first time. The music store greased and oiled it up for me prior to leaving with it. This seems like a good cheap investment for someone who may be unsure if the trumpet is the instrument for them. Would rather spend under $100 than thousands or more on a "good" instrument just to find out you hate it.
@drzoidberg718 жыл бұрын
I'm not a professional by any means, but that trumpet definitely sounds much better than those plastic ones. The tone produced definitely depends on the player, and you got a better tone than most. I have an old Olds cornet with the old professional valve block, or I'd consider getting something like this. I'm a low brass player myself, but I like having a trumpet and horn to fiddle around on. I’m increasingly of the opinion that when it comes to trumpets the mouthpiece may in many instances be more important than the instrument itself. To me this trumpet actually didn’t sound bad at all, especially in light of the fact that you’d just unboxed it shortly prior to lubing and playing it. Having said that, the crucial question is, “Will it stand the test of time?” That’s the area that I question this trumpet’s value in. For someone who just “fools around” with the instrument or who just wants to get an idea of how it feels to hold and play a trumpet this instrument probably would be cost-effective. For a more serious student it’d probably be advisable to go with even a Chinese horn that’s received a fair number of positive reviews online.

Well Trent, I had not watched this entire video until now. What a piece of work! I think you may be onto something with that provisional diagnosis of syphilis in the tuning slides. Be careful! One of the guys in our quintet has one of these trumpets (I think it is SAI). it was more like $119 US about 8 years ago, but definitely India. It was such a deviation from musical worthiness that the original owner (who bought it for the laughs), went through and corrected all of the alignment, out-of-round, polishing and lubrication problems. He felt that the slide grease was what we call "Pine Tar" in the USA. Anyway, the French horn player doubles on trumpet when we need a third, and he uses that trumpet. Where I live there are a lot of schools (private, christian schools mainly) that have a shoestring budget. I could see such instruments as serving their needs, provided they were QC checked by the receiver first. Although I'd prefer to pay a bit more for Jin Bao factory instruments from J Packer or Mack Brass, as they have a two week, 100% return policy if the buyer is dissatisfied. Finally, I wonder if SAI is some sort of conglomerate as I've had dealings with SAI Pharmaceuticals over the years. Anyway, my best to you and yours - Tom, Indianapolis

On one hand, your sarcasm is hysterical and dead on accurate. (I'm surprised you didn't recognize the high end 3rd valve slide being SUPERIOR for development ring finger strength.) On a serious note I can tell you from experience ISOs (Instruments Shaped Objects) like this are one reason kids quit school band programs. The kid thinks, "I stink at trumpet. I sound bad." When in truth, it's the instrument, made so poorly the Canadian Brass couldn't make them sound good.

Looks like a ding about 3' from the brace to the bell . This trumpet is perfectly tuned in the key of Hb. . A little 10/30 wt oil will help the slides . And it sizzles when you play the "Song of India" on it.

I’d say find a inexpensive Yamaha student horn, or a more reputable brand if you have any seriousness about learning another instrument, even if it’s just for personal fulfillment. You will be kicking yourself down the road after you’ve been playing for a while and actually try a better made horn, even if it’s just a student line horn, they will be much better made and you will sound much better and feel more confident playing it.

@jodie64655 жыл бұрын
tuxman3. I’m not sure if that is regular in a Bb trumpet. But I would suggest looking up an average poll for the valve or specific info on your instrument. I have no way of checking mine, because the valves don’t come off it. Sorry I can’t help.

I bought a trumpet for $25 on ebay from some random guy in China and the lead pipe is at a different angle to the bell and it hurts to hold but it's been good as an intro of trumpet as a second instrument (after trombone) for me because I already understood brass and could get around the instruments (many) shortcomings.

@lucassherfey91198 жыл бұрын
Norman Canter Eh. I probably couldn't tell the difference between my brother using this and his Yamaha trumpet, and he's been playing for a few months. For a beginner who's undecided about their instrument, it's probably a good investment to buy this before an actual trumpet that costs way more. A beginner won't be able to tell the difference between the two anyways.

You have quite a few brass instruments, Trent! With me, it's more wind instruments than brass, since I have a tin whistle, a slide whistle, a panpipe, and a bunch of ocarinas. I also have a trumpet, but it's gold instead of silver. I'm still getting used to the trumpet as an instrument, since I'm kind of skeptical when it comes to the volume level of the sound that comes out of an instrument. I like quieter instruments better, since I get scared when a sudden, unexpected, loud sound gets to my ears. I'm not saying that I don't like my trumpet because it's too loud; it's a cool thing to have! However, I use less breath in most of my instruments because I'm nervous about loud sounds. It might not be the best for the potential of my instruments, but less breath makes the instrument quieter and easier on my ears. I haven't played any songs on my trumpet yet, but I wish I could play some music from my favorite video games such as The Legend of Zelda.
@TrentHamilton6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Perhaps you should consider something like a flugelhorn or an alto/tenor horn - the sound is more mellow, less shrill, and easier to play quieter.

The valves are probably solid brass. Nice brass valves are usually hollow to make them lighter. This makes nice valves more expensive than cheap valves even though they have less metal.
