As others have mentioned already, cubes and sweet feed are excellent attractions ... until it rains. At that point, you have a pile of mush that will rot. In my experience, I have very rarely seen a mature buck eating any type of feed in daylight. Fawns and yearlings galore, 1-2 year olds, and young mothers come to the feed. As we all know, where the doe are is where the big bucks will be, so they'll be around, just not routinely standing under a feeder in daylight. That's where I hunt, I can't speak to other places. Hunting from a shooting house with feeders or over a corn pile has gotten me bored with deer hunting. It's much more exciting to sit in a climber or ladder down in the creek bottom or on a ridge. I see more deer over corn, but nothing compares to hearing a deer that slipped up 10 yards behind you or seeing an ear move 100 yards away through the bottom. As I age, it is much easier to sit in a "condo" with my phone so I can watch football or check Amazon. Heck, I can kill a deer in my back pasture pretty much any day, and occasionally do, but I don't consider that hunting. "Honey, don't let the dogs out until you hear me shoot" just doesn't make me happy.

I put a row of range pellets out and a row of corn out with 3 feet between them. The deer definitely prefer the corn at this point. Now this is the first time I put range pellets out so maybe they’re not used to them yet, but the picture from my cellular trail camera speaks 1000 words. I have 10 does on the corn and not a single one on the range pellets. They even had to walk over the range pellets to get to the corn. I use persimmon flavored rice bran because my wife is allergic to corn and don’t want to track it into the house.. the deer like the bran, but when it gets wet just becomes a pile of moldy slop.. hogs seem to love the moldy bran.. wish I could find pelletized at a decent price, but its marketed for horses which means its kind of high dollar. Got gravity feeders to keep it dry, but it still clumps up in the humidity and doesn’t flow very well out of the feeder.. this week I used an acorn picker-upper to pick up a 5 gallon bucket of acorns and mixed that with the rice bran and seems to help it move a little better through the feeder. One huge benefit I have noticed from the rice bran is that, everywhere I have used it, the soil is very fertile and grows lush green forage which the deer like as much as the bait

This is a cool video and an interesting option for supplemental feeding. With that said, please research something called "point source disease vector". If any deer feeding on that pile is sick, failing to spread the food out increases the risk of spreading disease among your deer herd. Instead of pouring it all out in a camera-friendly pile, spread it out over a long line or a bigger area, to keep fewer deer noses from being in the exact same spot. You don't want those big bucks getting sick and dying.

First of all I don’t bait deer, ever! But my thoughts are it will be much harder for game wardens to notice this feed than the unnatural yellow corn and to catch people who illegally bait deer, in states where it is illegal.
@survivinginalabama55843 күн бұрын
😂😂 here in Alabama you can bait. But the state in all their wisdom decided to tax deer baiting. But before baiting was legal I would never ever put brown sugar on a stump. Because it would be really hard to see it especially after a rain.

I use cotton seed and bucks tear it up.
@survivinginalabama55845 күн бұрын
I have used gin trash from the cotton gin. Is this what you are talking about? Or actual seed?

Where can we find this product.

Local feed store or co-op. I have not seen it at tractor supply but who knows on that.

Put out a bag of "cracked corn" next to the cattle feed and see what happens. Cracked Corn is like cocaine to the deer, they will completely eat a 50lb bag of the stuff in less than 12 hours. Never experienced anything like it. A bag of regular whole grain kernel corn dumped out will last for a few days, but a 50lb bag of that cracked stuff gets ate up right away in just a few hours. They really love it, and it is cheaper than the cattle feed!

Ok I will next time I go to the store

I've been using Tractor Supply Range Cubes for 5 or 6 years. I also use it for catfish baiting. The Tractor Supply brand I use melts really fast. That's reason I started using it. I got the idea from "Double Down Deer Feed". It dissolves very quickly so the deer get the benefits into their system right away. I started using it during a drought period when the deer were pretty stressed from lack of food. A 50lb bag will only last a few days. The area I hunt in north central Texas has plenty of hogs but they don't seem to like it as much as they do corn. So that normally means they will leave some it for the deer!

I have heard about using it for catfish. I’m gonna try it

I do not see anyone talking about hogs?

I don’t have hogs here but I did give some to my domestic hogs and they didn’t really eat it all. So I don’t know

Ive tried them with little success. Even the wild hogs wouldn’t eat them.
@survivinginalabama558423 сағат бұрын
Are they eating them at all? Or is the deer not finding them? Or did you put them in a place the deer don’t travel?

I've been using goat sweet feed it works great in my area.

What about raccoons and coyotes?

I have not seen a coyote on it but the raccoons do. Funny I have pictures of a spike and a coon having a standoff.

Molasses
@survivinginalabama5584Күн бұрын
I have used molasses many times liquid and dry. Last year I paid 38 a bag for dry. The cubes were 13.50 and seem to work better. The molasses does last longer if poured on a stump or log. Good luck

@ I buy it at tractor supply as sweet feed. It’s pellet form and provides 14% protein. Used to be only a $1 more per 50# bag than corn, which was $6 at the time. Now, corn is 7-9 $$$ per bag and sweet feed is $12-13 per bag. Covid and Joe B did it, along with the WEF.
@alderringer8816Күн бұрын
ok, how much for a 50 lb bag??

If there are deer in the area it will work. Maybe find a some sign like a trail and put some there. Then you can move it around to where you want it.

Better read up on the rules Ricky it says nothing about not feeding deer you can't "hunt" over a baited area doesn't mean you can't feed your deer after season ECT or during season on the other side of your farm!
@gregkubala89225 күн бұрын
How about you scout and hunt over a trail instead of baiting. Try learning how to hunt.

It doesn't really work UNLESS you've already scouted and found trails and plenty of deer signs. You can't just walk anywhere and dump it out and expect it to suck in the deer. It's not like it's a magnet and DRAWS deer in from miles around. Deer have a "home range" and won't venture far from it.
@survivinginalabama55845 күн бұрын
@ true but if there are any deer in the area they will find it because they smell it
@Rico11b5 күн бұрын
@@survivinginalabama5584 Much agreed. I was just pointing out that a hunter still has to FIND the deer like you already have before something like this can be used. Just walking out in the forest and dumping it, isn't going to magically pull deer into an area that isn't already holding deer. They're avoiding that place for a reason, and a sweet treat isn't going to magically override there sense of danger. Only the RUT can do that. :)

Getting harder and harder to be a "hunter" as land gets broken up into smaller and smaller parcels. In some counties 50acres is the average parcel size.
