Guys, I'm from Romania and I don't think I've ever seen Transfagarasan soooo crowded. You definitely had bad luck that day, foggy and cloudy skies too. Even the racing poles and placards on the side of the road aren't usually there - and because of them, I think it felt like the road narrowed even more. Also, lots of people walking on the street among cars, that's insane... On a different topic, Romanian people know not to underestimate, nor to feed the bears (there are constant public reminders and announcements), they're not big fluffy kittens. I might be mistaken but those guys taking pictures so close and throwing food at them were probably foreign tourists. Unfortunately (and this applies to everyone), don't feed the bears (or any other wildlife out there) and don't leave trash behind should be common sense, and apparently, it's not :( Fingers crossed for more sunny experiences along the way and keep enjoying your journey! :)

Interesting that they care about cyclist, but give a shit on driving rules, as they weren’t allowed to overtake the cyclists on a continuous line in the middle of the road.
@sebastianr1204 Жыл бұрын
@@csuporj Yes, I have a driving license. But this question is not important. According Romanian law you are not allowed to pass a vehicle across a continuous line. Of course I would drive legally! Especially I wouldn’t pass if another vehicle comes from the front, like they did. Would you give a shit about the local laws and drive like a maniac as a tourist?
@sebastianr1204 Жыл бұрын
@@csuporj Have you deleted a comment? Does this mean you don’t care about traffic rules? So you think it is no problem, if cyclist is running a red light because red lights are slowing him down as for a driver to wait for a location he Mai pass legally?
@sebastianr1204 Жыл бұрын
@@csuporj Before visiting and driving in a country you have to look up the traffic rules. It’s your obligation. For example in Romania you have to indicate within a roundabout, while in Germany it toi get fined if you indicate to the left within a roundabout. So if you say anybody doing something illegal you should do the same? It’s that, what you want to say? So if you see a Romanian stealing, you should go an steal something, too when visiting Romania?

Feeding wild animals (or keeping them as pets) and littering is illegal in Romania, and people shouldn't need signaling posts for that, it is just common sense you shouldn't. Televisions and specialists are insisting on that, but, unfortunately, many people here are uneducated, but what you saw wouldn't happen if the authorities wouldn't be so incompetent. I fallowed many tourist vloggers that came here, and I think you are the first that raised these issues. I don't know if they didn't saw what you saw or they chose not to show what they have seen. But is a good thing you touched these issues. Awareness is always good. Yes, many of us are ashamed of our society, but that is not a reason to hide the dirt under the rug. Oh, and they should have close the road for the bike race. Bikes and cars don't go well on that kind of road.

Nothing to with managing the roads better, simply bad day to be there with cycling on. Try drive when the Tour de France is on, no different. There is a website that lists when it opens and closes each year and events. I've been through many times and never seen it that congested, but that's life.
@tortellinifettuccine Жыл бұрын
The roads are well managed, more so than anywhere in the usa lmao, it's the best road in the world, top gear literally went 100 miles an hour and faster all around it, and you can too, you just need to go in the morning. People don't realize this isn't a highway. It even closes during a few months in winter because of the avalanches. It's a beautiful road, that's a must-see tourist spot.

Hi! Bears on Transfăgărășan are used to begging for food at the road's edge. They pose for pictures too, they even high 5! Is it wrong to feed them? I guess, but I reckon I did it myself too, their eyes were literally begging, and I went soft. I also know of a Fox so used to joining tourists on their hiking trail, that also poses for food. A very beautiful one. Anyway, Transfăgărășan is kind of busy most of the time, I usually go during the working week days, and even then, I leave towards it so early in the morning, like 5:30 a.m. Fagaras Mountains are the highest în România, and many trails start from Bâlea Lake, so there are always lots of tourists, both native and foreign. Cheers!
@RaduRadonys Жыл бұрын
Yes, when you feed them you basically kill them. They get so used to human food and human interaction that they will go into villages when there are no tourists to feed them. And they will get shot to protect the village. So think about that next time when you feel like feeding or high fiving a wild bear.

Transfăgărășan is almost always busy, especially in weekends or public holidays. In Romania, people do not need signs to know what to do or not do. You don't need signs to know you don't feed the bears. Lol. We are not used being handheld. Not sure you noticed, the bikers feeding the bears were not Romanians and the big bus was from Holland. As a Romanian I ask you to not act so shocked seeing garbage. Of course it's not ok, but for sure you've seen it in USA. However you did not see homeless people living in tents, you did not get robbed at gun point as it's sadly the case in America. So, yeah, enjoy your stay and do less finger pointing!

I mean, I'm going to be honest, kind of your faults, not that you would have known, I made the same mistake. It's a HUGE tourist spot, I mean, it was on top of gear for a reason. Every European and his mother knows about the road and wants to go there. If you want to drive there without traffick and people, you have to go early, like 8am. Also, bikes ALWAYS have authority over cars. This is Europe, so they'll always be pretty confident in their safety. Also, YES, FINALLY I HEAR SOMEONE SAY THE SAME, THAT PART OF ROMANIA LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE THE HIGHLANDS.

Authorities should impose a fee for visiting or transiting TransF. Like in AT at Hoch Alpen Strasse. This way you can control number of cars and impose restrictions if needed. Anyway Balea Lac has been transformed into a giant oriental fair by the lack of implication from local authorities and will be worse if they continue not to do it. I remember 20 years ago when there were 20 -30 cars on the whole road and we used this access to hike the Fagaras mountains. Also, some Do not feed the Bears signs should be there.

Feeding bears is forbidden by law. People just don't understand that you are NOT allowed to feed bears as they will always come back to where people live and search for food, leaving their natural habitat for "easy" food. Anyway, next time go to Transalpina, same summer season, that is the highest road in Romania , at 2200 meters. It's less crowded than Transfagarasan because it's slightly further away and it's more breathtaking.

Transfagarasan became a victim of it's own fame, especially in week-ends during week-days things might be a little bit more chill, universally usually Tuesdays are the most chill day of the week if there's no holiday, also be there early in the morning. You might also want to see Transalpina, less spectacular but on a higher elevation than Transfagarasan, some people like it more than Transfagarasan, if you visit Transalpina stop by Stana Stefanu, might want to grab something to eat, but beware the food is heavy and it's not vegan, well probably the polenta and the pancakes are vegan. Litter is a big problem in Romania and usually in the Balkans, people are just to carefree to think about the consequences, and there is little to no education done about it.

About the trash that you can find anywhere, outside cities: It's a budgeting issue. Inside the cities there are cleaning services that do an okay job but outside of the cities the inter-city roads are a really low priority for cleaning purposes. Some of the trash you can see outside cities might be a few years old because it's really no one's job to pick it up. There was a popular civic movement at one point: "Let's Do It Romania" that tries to address this issue. That might make a decent video.

It's unbelievable how much you missed by not getting out of your car. Sure, the road is beautiful, but to go all the way up there and not see Balea Lake is sacrilege. All you had to do was walk for 2 minutes. Don't even get me started on the small hikes that you can do there to really enjoy the raw natural beauty of that place.
