The World's Hardest Speedrun

You're watching the extremely complex co-op speedrun. Full walkthrough of Left 4 Dead 2 was done in 41:53 (IGT). It took us almost 4 years to complete this difficult challenge. All our game knowledge has collected in this film.
ＳＴＯＲＹ：
Right after the last co-op speedrun in 2017 we wondered about creation of something more, than everyone used to see. Previous runs started getting a bit monotonously, we didn't want to make speedruns by campaigns anymore. The idea included avoid the custom HUD and music, if possible. But anyway we planned not really classic speedrun though. This project was classified, everyone thought, that we were inactive. Eventually... it cost a lot of time to realize our dreams.
ＳＰＥＥＤＲＵＮ ＤＥＴＡＩＬＳ：
Presented speedrun is tool-assisted (TAS) and not 100% optimized. Most of the player inputs were saved and executed through the Movement Reader server plugin. Also, there were RNG manipulations with Director spawns on the map to get the necessary inventory and infected positions. This project started almost 4 years ago, long before the Last Stand update - all footage is recorded in the 2.1.5.5 game version.
Originally, scripted speedruns for Left 4 Dead series are considered enough difficult to record and take a long to implement proper optimization due to the co-op gameplay, the number of various ways of the playthroughs and presence the huge amount of the random. The programming languages Squirrel and SourcePawn were mostly used to write various tools (such like Speedrunner Tools) and map-related scripts.

The video has been re-uploaded. Unfortunately, speedrun contained some mistakes. We spawned defibrillator on c11m1 - it's wrong, because no defibrillator spawns on 1st map 18:43. It appears on c11m2 instead. Also we noticed some incorrects in statistics 37:13. We apologies about this re-upload and our mistakes. It was hard to make the speedrun perfect. Sometimes we can miss something... So sad to lose many views and your awesome comments, that you sent to us :( But we had to do it. This was a common mistake.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but how do games as rng heavy as undead get TAS'ed I mean isnt a TAS a pre recorded set of movements played back in real time on a seperate run? If so wouldnt any slight varience cause things to go askew? Like a singular stray zombie hit or such, and even outside of left for dead there seem to be TASes of other rng heavy games as well and I just dont understand how it works

TAS just means tools were used to create the run. Tools such as: Pausing, slowing down the game so that reaction speed isn't a factor in the speed that a game can be run. Save states so that you can save and load the game's state at will, giving you as many attempts to try something that might require many attempts to perform. As well as tools that allow performing specific inputs or to gain information about the game's or player's state (velocity, angle, location in the form of coordinates etc.)

Thanks for you question. Yes, the TAS is pre-recorded: map script, player's inputs, spawns are saved in files. You can run the script in real time and get a super play. In a nutshell, the creation process looks like: *routing > script building > demo recording > video recording* And also, yes, definitely, some infected that spawned by RNG (if we previously didn't save them on the map) could break the script and then the segment getting invalid. Usually, during TAS recording, no matter what game, human monitors the process and in case of aberration, the process can be rewritten. Originally, in L4D2 saves aren't available, only between saferooms - these are original 55 segments (maps/chapters) by the developers, where you may split your speedrun and re-record something inside the segment. So how do we deal with that heavy RNG presence? We were building a script for each map separately. An entire map/segment can be fully scripted and restarted/playback unlimited times in fast forward until a saferoom is successfully reached. The script will be restarted, if the operator seen some kind of issues during playback (like unlucky spawn by infected, incorrect boost by projectiles or something else that looks weird, non-natural). Mainly, such a script included de-RNG'ed initial infected spawns, Tanks spawns, items spawns, saved survivors movements, boosts, timings etc.

@@ryuk6750 Unfortunately, it takes a lot of time to save each infected spawn, make perfect each player's movement and make full optimize at all. During creation of TAS in that time there wasn't quite profitable to provide in-map saves as it the game was already divided on 55 segments and it's pretty suited. Also in general, we didn't want to increase Project's deadline and were avoiding the development of complex tools whenever possible. We tried to not focus on recording inputs for a long. Our goal was show optimal for its time speedrun.
