Big boys never ran 80 mph. They were designed for that top speed to ensure minimal chance of parts failure at their regular operating speeds of 40-60 mph.

That is a great video. Several years ago, we had the scanner on chasing the SP 4449 over Stevens Pass. The heat from the boiler and firebox drove the hotbox detectors nuts.

The UP steam crew does do a very good job at keeping the boiler pressure right around 298-300 psi without lifting the safeties. However, in some instances, safeties lifting is inevitable, like when you’re closing the throttle partially after accelerating a decent sized train up to cruising speed.

I think i answered my own question. the limit of 1600 tons is at 40mph. it could pull more but down at 20-25.

Automatic stoker. No way any crew is shoveling 9-10 tons of coal into the firebox every hour at maximum power output lol. At any rate, it is now an oil burner, so no stoker needed. Just an oil firing valve.
