From poaching endangered shellfish to smoking quaaludes, this is the wild origin story of how meth took over South Africa.
The use of meth, known as Tik, has skyrocketed across South Africa. It's thought that the country might have one of the highest per-capita rates of crystal meth use on earth.
But the wildest twist in the tale is that this may have been ultimately caused by a secret weapons program run by the old apartheid regime itself.

Enjoying VICE marathon today. Your shows are amazing! If you have interest, I would like to see interviews of people who use wheelchairs and what it is like. How do they get treated, what are the plusses and roadblocks of being disabled. There is a large variety of people who use wheelchairs and I think there is a need for people to know the challenges and the attitudes of people who do not using wheelchairs. Thank you VIce!

Used to take Mandrax and Quaaludes a lot in my teens and 20s (I'm 54) and tbh methaqualone is infinitely more pleasurable than alcohol. Not hard to see why they were so popular - you'd get this warm, euphoric relaxation - like being drunk but without the unpleasant effects of drunkenness. They lasted maybe four to six hours with no hangover. Mandrax was the trade name for Quaalude in the UK, South Africa, Australia, Asia. After Methaqualone was banned there was Doriden, (Glutetimide) which had the exact same effects but was banned by the late 1980s. Nowadays the closest thing is probably GHB, which feels very similar (except GHB makes people a lot hornier than Quaaludes ever did) Interesting origin story: Quaalude was developed to allow doctors in wartime to get short periods of sleep but to be able to function if they had to be woken up, which was not remotely possible with barbiturates, chloral hydrate, or bromides - the other sleep drugs around at the time.

@@basilbyers5066 you should be able to figure out the difference between amphetamine salts and methamphetamine. No one treats ADHD with methamphetamine. You'll be back. Otherwise that time wouldn't mean anything to you. And this video wouldn't have you clicking on it. It would be insignificant to you. Just remember to moderate, don't slam it, preferably eat it, and do regularly timed dosages. Like a doctor's script. 15 mg 3x a day worked for me. But that was Desoxyn. Street meth is a little more tricky to regulate dosage, but its doable. But, if you can't moderate, (you CAN, you're just not applying yourself) then I guess a lifetime without it is your lot. And you will have to go to a shrink and get properly diagnosed for the undiagnosed ADHD you have, and get a legal script for the much less effective Adderall or Vyvanse, etc. (Hold out for Desoxyn) But don't get your hopes up. Settle for modafinil. You'll be fine.

I love this series, this was another informative video but since you mentioned the gray area market of precursors from China, why not making a video digging deeper into that topic? Also another topic: why is Europe getting more and more shipments of very cheap and very potent ketamine in solid form (crystals) and the liquid medical grade ketamine is not as easy to come as in the past? Those are both topics that deserve to be investigated deeper, people want to know! :) Im sure it would make for two amazing videos
@x8n42xb67n
@x8n42xb67n Жыл бұрын
Ketamine now comes from China more often than not, the potent stuff around is usually research chemicals (2-FCDK, DCK, MXP etc etc). There are no liquid vials really anymore because India clamped down on it.
@constantlylearnandgrow3487
@constantlylearnandgrow3487 Жыл бұрын
liquid ketamine is nothing else than solved ketamine crystals in a solvent. if you have it as a liquid it takes up a multitude of the space of just pure crystals and is therefore harder and more expensive to smuggle. Also the medicinal bottles are fragile and hard to transport in big quantity.

He caught an infection in South Africa off the tik and mandrix and his arm swelled 4x its size and he had to be flown to a U.S. ICU for weeks to save his life. As a Canadian, I wish our news networks would provide this type of info. At the very least, they could have reports such as these in the late night news programs, so kids and adolescents are not seeing them. I mean, War clips are on news programs ffs. Which is likely why there is soo much murders, mass shootings and other violent crimes nowadays. People are shown violence in the news day in and day out since the 90's, operation Desert Storm, first time live action war was televised. Before that we only seen recorded clips or documentaries...
