This is a very sweet episode. Father Stone isn't really a bad guy. Probably just a bit simple and the reveal that he thinks of Ted and his visits as the best thing in his life says a lot, especially when you meet the abusive father.

he is also a real mammys boy too. mammy thinks the world of him more than the father. and maybe i could be wrong, but the nana might have dementia or another form of illness. she doesnt seem like she cares much for anyone. its not mentioned in the show but that is the irish mentality

It's interesting to note that part of the reason that Father Ted had a change of heart towards Father Stone is because his dad came in and verbally trashed him. Father Ted related to that which is foreshadowed in the waiting room where he described himself as the idiot son who became a priest and his parent's preference for his brother who became a doctor.

And I can totally relate to him when Dougal asks him stuff like "Have you seen ___ lately?" and "He must be about 80 now?". People do ask questions like this sometimes. And what is a person supposed to say to that? If you want to have a conversation, have a conversation. Don't just ask random stuff you don't really care about.

People always cite "Are You Right There Father Ted" as the best Father Ted episode, but as much as I love that "So I hear you're a racist now Father" scene, this episode for me is the best Father Ted episode. Ted, for all his scheming and materialistic desires, is a good man and this episode really shows the full gambit of his personality, and even gives us a nice redemption arc in under 25 minutes! Often times characters don't really change or grow in an episode, like "Are You Right There Father Ted", funny as it is, Ted is the same man at the end of the episode as he was at the start, but this episode has Ted still slightly put off by Father Stone, but at the end he's changed and at the very least content to have Stone visit.
