There are two challenges you should never enter into with a Swiss national: one is skiing and the other is money.
Despite having just over 8.5 million inhabitants and being nestled amongst tranquil mountains, the Swiss Confederation has become not only one of the richest countries in the world but also a safe haven for the world's great fortunes.
However, in this new collaboration with Value School, we are not going to focus so much on the Swiss economy as the very odd institution that has become an important player in the global financial market in recent years: the Swiss central bank, otherwise known as the Swiss National Bank.
The central bank of Switzerland is so peculiar that it is listed on the stock exchange, has the lowest interest rates in the world, and for many experts has already become a real Hedge Fund. Do you want to know more about an institution that in 2019 alone made $50 billion in profits? In this video, we give you all the details.

Very good video - well done. The cantons are not "kind of" autonomous regions. In Switzerland, euch canton has its own CONSTITUTION and parliament! They are all self governed, but have ceded certain parts of their autonomy to the federal government under the Swiss constitution. Similar to the United States, who's constitution the Swiss took over 150 years ago and then kept improving. This also explains why the Swiss have such liberal gun laws.

Fun fact: after ww 1 and 2, a few provinces of germany and France tried to join Switzerland, the neutral and stable country. Switzerland decided not to so as not to be seen as non-neutral...being invaded, its just not them. Personally, I think that would've been a great way to create a european union that would've started out democratic...slowly expanding from the centre of europe.

Not all is rosy in Swizerland. Its phenomenally expensive and there is very little choice in its stores. Aldi in Switzerland charges Harrods(London) prices for groceries, which sometimes just consist of rows of tinned carrots and not much else. Even the Swiss are fed up of the cartel food suppliers hold in the country.

It doesn't make any sense to keep low debt in this economy while other member countries borrow free money and dilute the Euro value. We could increase our government debt to same level with other member countries that are higher in debt but instead of spending all that money create a government wealth fund that compounds the free money and uses tiny portion of the funds annually to cover part of government budget and that way lower citizens taxes to make our country more competitive and boost the economy.

Denmark as a member of the EU is part of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM II), therefore the Danish Crown is tied into a fixed range of exchange rate to the Euro.

@@user-nf9xc7ww7m There are still people in the french region that speak franco provencial and in ticino they also sometimes speak with a lombard dialect. And the swiss can speak standard german if they want to...they just don't like it that much.

I would like to see a video about bad stuff in Switzerland. I'm not from there (I'm from the second poorest EU country: Croatia). However, everybody is talking about Switzerland like a perfect place. Is it really so?

Fuck no. We've had state sanctioned child slavery until the 1970s. And when we looked to make reparations for those, we only offered a laughably small, symbolic sum. And to get that money, the 'Verdingkinder', the former child slaves had to actually fight for that money and prove to an invasive extent that they were indeed sold by the government, retraumatizing them again. After WW2, our biggest child protective institution was headed mainly by two swiss nazi-supporters which carried out a state sponsored genocide against the Jenische. (Forced sterilization of their women, kidnapping of their children, etc.) We're also the first generation of swiss people that grew up knowing we'd all be able to vote. Before 1990, we didn't have universal voting rights. (I.e. women weren't allowed to vote.) We also had proud, open fascists inspired by US republicans leading our biggest party under Schwarzenbach and Blocher. And that's just the bigger stuff. We had a pretty big, invasive police state in the mid-20th century. But that's kinda before my time. Oh, also our lgbtiqa+ protections are laughably weak and hatecrimes aren't taken seriously at all. Also our police is about as unaccountable to the public and as unwilling to change that as the US police __ Like, the Switzerland I grew up in is vastly different compared to the one my parents grew up in.

Idk, don't you think it's unfair that the bank of swis can just basically print the money out of nothing to buy stocks and bonds, thus generating large amount of profit ? Sorry but I'm a bit dumb at financial economy so if anyone can correct my thought will be appreciated cheers.

So what can you do with risen demand? Either you print money, which causes your money to become „cheaper“ or you don‘t fulfill it and it becomes more expensive. So to keep the currency stable it is needed to print the right amount on new currency. So what to do with the extra amount of foreign cash? Leaving it sitting around wont bring any ROI so it gets invested in new assets(in this case stocks). In the end it is not unfair in a capitalist global market, but in the end the question is how fair you consider capitalism. Hope that helps.

Well the Currency is backed by Switzerland's safe and robust economy. So even if they print, the demand Keeps it off from devaluing.
