Akira Toriyama's influence across pop culture rivals that of George Lucas, too vast and immeasurable to put into words. All of your favourite JRPGs - and I do literally mean ALL, be it Final Fantasy, Persona, Xenoblade, Trails in the Sky, and literally everything else - every single one of them can be traced back to Dragon Quest, which Toriyama worked on, and if not for him none of those games would exist. In fact, the Japanese gaming industry as a whole owes much to Toriyama, everything from Mario and Sonic to Street Fighter and fighting games in general were heavily influenced by his works. The world would have been a very different place without this man, and his legacy will be remembered decades if not centuries to come. Rest in peace Toriyama-sama.

I have been watching Dragon Ball since I was 6 years old back in the late 1997 when I was in first grade while I was in my elementary school years back then. It was phenomenal that I watched Dragon Ball Z on Toonami on Cartoon Network on weekday afternoons after school alongside with my young brother, who of course got me introduced to Dragon Ball in the first place. I played Dragon Ball videogames today, as I did for 22 years ago back in late 2002 when I was 11 years old. Drew Dragon Ball characters with Scholastic's "How to Draw Dragon Ball Z" drawing book, collecting Dragon Ball media on DVD and Blu-Ray sets, collect the full color version of the Dragon Ball manga, and went to the movie theater to watch Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' in the summer of 2015, Dragon Ball Super: Broly in early 2019, and Dragon Ball Super: Superhero in 2022. I had a good time with Dragon Ball for 3 decades in my young life. Thank you, Mr. Toriyama-sensei for everything that you gave us to entertain and have a great adventures with your creativity. Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama-sensei.

I remember walking home from school to watch Toonami. Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z was one of the first anime shows I watched. Dragon Ball franchise is one of my inspirations to making manga of my own. Thanks, Akira Toriyama and Toonami, for introducing us to one of the most iconic franchises ever.

My first introduction to Dragon Ball was when a 4 year old me had just gotten home from school, I turned on the tv and the summoning of majin boo was happening, I didn't know what was going on but I kept on watching and ever since I was never the same. Toriyama not only made continue my passion for drawing but his works followed me everywhere (as someone who had move out a lot as a kid) so I never felt lonely but thanks to him I made many of my closest friends. His legacy will carry on even though he's gone. Thank you Toriyama, may you rest in peace my hero.

I remember how went i was a kid playing with my friends at the park and the street and DB was being broadcast at 5pm every single afternoon and as we play we always were checking the clock so we don't miss it. The moment the clock hit 4:50pm we all said our goodbyes and spring to our homes to go watch Dragon Ball. We watched all together on the closest home and went the light went out which was often since i lived at LATAM we just instantly started running to our closest Colmado(Which is like a Bodega or 7/11 for all of you american people) and the clerk of it would always allow us all in to sit inside on the floor to watch Dragon Ball with all of us. So many memories with friends i don't see anymore, with people from my old places were i grew up. It was a moment that for 30 minutes joined us all together my friends, my neighbors, the store clerk, the adults around us and we all felt safe. Then getting out super hype and excited after watching the episode and starting playing recreating the episode having fake fights with friends. Toriyama and Dragon Ball means so much to me and so did to my friends and everyone around us. It really hurts so much for someone i never ever met and yet found a way to impact us all deep inside our soul, memories and way of living. For me also goes beyond only Dragon Ball. Chrono Trigger is my favorite RPG ever and one of my favorite games ever and that applies also to Dragon Quest and the whole franchise. He really did so much for me

Just like Osamu Tezuka, who died in his 60s back in the 80s on February, Akira Toriyama would also join his idol in the afterlife in March, years and a month apart. Both creators got to catch up on their unfinished projects. 😢

Coming from someone who initally watched DB through KZbin clips as a kid, I'm glad new fans have it easier lol. I liked your story of how you got invested, my first episode was a random one in GT. So I definitely get just going "No idea what's happeneing, but that was cool".

The first video game I ever owned for myself was Legacy of Goku on GBA. And when I finally got a PS2 in 2004? Budokai 1 & 2. Not even I know how big of an influence Toriyama had on my development as a child. Because some of it is too far back to remember it.

A number of actors from the series have passed away over the years - Kohei Miyauchi (Kamesennin), Hiromi Tsuru (Bulma), Hirotaka Suzuoki (Tenshinhan). But never in my life would have guessed that we would soon be saying goodbye to Master Toriyama himself. I can't overstate the impact Dragon Ball had on teenage me. Once I caught the DBZ bug from local TV, I started to consume anything Goku-related that I had could get my hands on in my post-Soviet backward country with my 56k Internet. I lived and breathed DBZ: I watched both the local version and the Toonami version (guess how I learned English), I held Dragon Ball knowledge trivia for my mates during school breaks, I played the janky PSX/SNES/MUGEN games, I collected cards and stickers that you'd get with bags of crisps, I bought the manga, I visited websites both local and international (Planet Namek, DBZ Uncensored, Temple o' Trunks), I downloaded AMVs (set to Linkin Park/Limp Bizkit half the time), learned the words to "Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku", practised martial arts "so Imma be like Vegeta!!!11!!!" (well, tried to at least), read fan fiction, browsed DeviantART for new fanart, wrote game guides, and of course - I drew thousands of Trunkses and Vegetas in the margins of high school notebooks. I carried the torch through my old-fart years, especially when Toriyama himself returned to the series. It was then that I realised that it was truly his style, his characters, the world he had created that defined the series - something that couldn't be reproduced by fanfic writers, Toei, Toyotaro or anyone else. Just a few weeks ago I was wondering when they would announce the latest film from him.... If a Toriyama-penned production still remains in the works and gets released, I don't think I'll bring myself to watch it. Because that would mean that I'll have no more Dragon Ball stuff left to enjoy, at least from the original creator. Thank you, master Toriyama for creating this world that brought me so much joy in both my teenage and adult years. And thank you, Hidden, for this wonderful tribute. SANKYUU! DRAGON BALL!

I wonder if Akira Toriyama knew just how big Dragon Ball was and just how many people his primary series reached? Dragon Ball is absolutely iconic and was the gateway for many people into anime, not to mention the fact that it is without a doubt, one of the main factors in the popularity of anime in the west in general. The anime industry would be so vastly different today, not just for us in the west and our ability to view it, but the actual creators in Japan as well. Masashi Kishimoto, Eiichiro Oda, Tite Kubo, Kohei Horikoshi, Yuki Tabata, Hiro Mashima, they are all mangakas that were influenced by Toriyama and the countless mangakas that have since been influenced by them. The only mangaka more influential than Toriyama is the man who inspired him, Osamu Tezuka. Toriyama has left behind an incredible legacy that will live on forever. Thank you Akira Toriyama, for your work and what it has meant to me and everyone else who has ever read, watched or played it.
