I gave Eightsleep a serious thought when I was buying my new mattress. However, requiring a subscription for full functionality on a multi-thousand dollar mattress COVER was a deal breaker. @@chiragnegi6276 Yeah, I can agree with that. I wanted to get one despite the subscription, but when the company removed the API access and this way eliminate any meaningful home automation integration, I simply decided to not get one. @@JaggSwag230 Because they want you to get used to the features that you'll lose if you drop it. It's a type of sales pitch instead of upselling you're basically "downselling". People typically have an idea of what they're looking for in a product, in this case it's a means to cool your mattress directly, which EightSleep does. BUT it'll also be able do all this neat biometric and automation so you don't have to manually. That could draw a lot of people in, and you just explain how it's just a little extra money a month or they can just get the Eight Sleep alone and they'll have to do everything manually. With the required 1 year sub as part of the price tag you'll have people cancel and then realize all the neat features are gone, but they already spent all this money so they may sign up again.

I've had the pod 3 cover on top of a natural latex mattress I bought for a month. I'd say, if you're not an athlete, or if you don't have trouble falling asleep, you probably won't notice a big difference. I've always had trouble falling asleep, bordering on insomnia occasionally. According to my fitness band, the cover reduced my fall asleep time from 32 minutes avg (30-60 minutes min/max) to 22 minutes avg (21-25 minutes min/max). Even on days where I only sleep for 4 hours I feel much better, the whole-day feeling of "dread" isn't there anymore, it's just "regular tired" now. That being said, it's a great piece of tech and I wish it'll come down in price soon.

There's a million things you can do starting today to improve your sleep just as much if not more. Cold shower before bed (at least your face) gives about half the benefit I got from 8sleep. Monitoring/cutting caffeine is also very important - find out your caffeine half life absorption, you'll be surprised how much variability there is in the general population, it depends a lot on your genetics. I had both blood work & a genetic test done and I know that my half-life is about 8 hours, but it can depend on a lot of factors too, for example if I drink too much caffeine, the window is longer. Actually for some people, it can be the opposite, the more caffeine you drink, the quicker you metabolise it. As a general rule, cut any caffeine before 16:00. At worst 18:00, if you drink past 18:00 your sleep quality will be heavily impacted. Ideally aim for no caffeine after 12:00 or 14:00. Also wait at least an hour after waking up before taking caffeine, and get at least 30 minutes of sunlight or sunlight-equivalent before your first caffeine intake. Keeping dosage low is also important, remember it's caffeine half-life, so if you take too much it will affect your sleep/stress the same way even if you only take it at a reasonable hour. It will keep cortisol levels on a natural level. I thought I had anxiety issues so I went to the psychiatrist. Turns out I was just overdosing myself on caffeine every day! Generally you want to keep your caffeine intake at ~80mg if you take it daily. But if you're an athlete or you're trying to lose weight, you can take up to 300mg on a short-term basis. When you exercise, you lose caffeine a little faster through sweat + burning fat. All that being said, the thing that is great about 8sleep is that you're offloading changing your habits onto technology. You get to sleep better, even if you drank way too much coffee and totally ruined your sleep schedule. It's been amazing at upping my mood, and because I sleep better, I both have more time in the morning and overall it's been a big impact on my quality of life. I wouldn't trade it for anything. It's just a bit too expensive, it was too expensive even for me, had to get financing for it. But it'll pay off in my mental healthy. After all if I lose it, I'll have no income, and any income is better than no income.

Also, if you have sensory issues I'd advice against it. My girfriend tried it once and absolutely hated it. I solved it by putting a mattress topper on her half, but it's not ideal either way. And this with with the Pod cover 3, which supposedly has a "significantly improved feel" over the Pod 2. If that's "significantly improved", no wonder the Pod 2 had so many returns. I don't have nearly as many sensory issues as my girlfriend, I think I pretty much fall in the "normal" range albeit on a tail end of it (certain foams give me the ick, and I have the urge to wash my hands the instant they get greasy/dirty, but it's not like overbearing or something that takes much energy to ignore/overcome). Even for me it took 2 nights to get used to the feel of the "grid". I actually enjoy it now, but just FYI. That being said, they have a 30 day return window and from what I've read nobody had an issue returning it Oh yes and before I forget, there have been numerous reports of people getting leaks. Supposedly with the latest version of the Pod 3 they "solved" the issues, but who knows. I hope I never get a leak. The subscription thing is bullshit. The autopilot hasn't been 100% worth it for me yet, maybe it's placebo but on the nights that I tried it with the autopilot off, I felt like I slept better. If it weren't for the included 5 year warranty, as well as the fear of leaks, I would stop paying it.

The price is an investment, but then the 28 dollar a day subscription, for that price I can just run my ac daily without the 2k water cooler blanket and still save money and my whole house is cool. I'm sorry as much as this is a neat idea this is a big check for Zack.

I went ahead and purchased a Purple mattress shortly after your factory tour and quickly fell in love with it. Your video on those mattresses helped influence my decision since it addressed most of the things I valued in a mattress. I believe that someone else might have that sort of experience based off of this video... If it weren't for this mattress functions being proprietary and subscription tied. For something as expensive and influential to everyday life as a mattress, losing all of that if the company goes out of business is a major downside.

Great video as always, Zach. I can't help but think of the billions of people around the world who sleep like a baby every night on a $100 bed (matress and cover included). This is a good example of a product for people with too much disposable income.

Zack had me completely sold before he even mentioned the price. I clicked the link to look at ordering... then I saw the subscription and thought "okay cool that's fine I guess, so where's the price?" And then I saw it.... For Australians, it's over $3500 for the queen. That's enormous.

I’m sure it costs a pretty penny to make one but for the price of one bed cover I could redo, refresh and outfit my entire room (not from U.S.) with enough cash to spare for a quality AC unit… and a tv to boot. As for the subscription, it’s a slap in the face, after a year you could buy an Apple Watch with the same sleep tracking functions and plenty more to boot. Every other control should just be folded into the heat pump which circulates water. I know an app can be convenient - I have a Chinese spy fan which I can rotate and adjust from my phone but it’s an option, I can still do everything by just clicking a button on the damn thing itself. Such a good idea, the execution is garbage.

oh, yeah, in the US, a lot of house renovation and AC's are dirt cheap. In other countries, the price for this is "reasonable" as everything's expensive, but in the US it's about 3 times overpriced.

There's a bunch of people just talking trash about Zach, the product is bad, but the criticism should be towards the company with the goal of changing their business model, instead of hating Zach, which most haters seem to be taking advantage of the opportunity. The wayback machine shows the when they first started making mattresses (at least according to the way back machine, their website only being active since 2015) but when they first started pricing at $235. Kinda crazy that their price just kept going up and up for the same quality of product. Almost like they were trying to see just how much money they squeeze out of its consumers.

I knew about the required subscription before I watched this and the only reason I still checked out the video was because I assumed JRE wouldn't support such blatant anti-consumer practices and thought the company must have changed or allowed some sort of offline communication to the cover. Not only has nothing changed but Zack not even mentioning the required subscription is depressing. I'm in the market for a cover like this and could even justify spending $2k on a cover for a $1k mattress but no offline support and requiring an app with no consumer protections if the company can't support it or decides to not support it anymore is insane.
