If they want their player base back, and subscribtion revenue higher. They should open new server where people van start over and new leaderboards and nerf mtx hard, so you can not gain exp. From it. But only cosmetics and maybe fun rare fun weapons. That are NOT game Breaking. Or tradeable. That will probably raise the income over the amount of years. But im not An expert, so I probably wouldnt know anything about it. Edit: if you want more money, you could probably make some promotion where new players van get membership for a bit less. That way people Will be more eager top check out the game and grind.

I have to disagree with the people saying there's lack of content. Anachronia was a HUGE update. The Elite Dungeon series is fun, interactive, and challenging. Invention fixed a lot of issues with the economy and provides more content than any other skill. I agree with most points being made, and believe MTX needs to be fixed, but I don't see lack of content as a reason people stop playing or buying keys.

Thanks for the video Ravlar. I feel like the only way to save RS3 is to fully remove Treasure Hunter, this will bring back many players who quit because of MTX. Runescape has huge potential and doesn't have to live off MTX. RS3 team has a lot to learn from oldschool and its success.

Everyone just sounds salty. Jagex has given us osrs,ironman, and mobile. MIcrotransactions only affect the seller and buyer. If people wanna waste their money on keys and spins, let them. When people say, it's "pay2win", I don't think they realize how many keys and xp it takes to get 99s let alone 120s. Some ppl don't have the time of day to grind so the option to be able to get a boost is nice. It helps ppl keep up with the game. Once again,I am obviously not an expert and no one else reading this or watching the video is. An expert on how jagex's financials work that is. Marx is fine, ppl love blowing it out of proportion for views and such. I think the poor people are just mad they can't get extra keys.

I did a cursory look at TH promos between 2017 and 2019 on the wiki. Id love for someone to confirm or deny my findings. I found that in 2017, TH was plugged into update news posts 45+ times over the year. In 2018, it was plugged roughly 32 times. This year, it has been plugged 10 times so far. I used the wiki to find these results. What this tells me is Jagex has reduced their open promotion of TH since 2017 into 2019 which might explain the reduction in MTX profits. Another idea I had for why profits decreased is people have already bought their bank presets, their additional ability bars, and the cosmetics they were interested in. Just thoughts to consider.

I think the whole reason jagex invested so much resources and time in runescape mobile (at a cost to content in RS3) is that microtransactions are perceived as 'normal' in mobile games and income from such mobile mtx can be tremendous. The strategy would be to keep new players coming in, make them spend alot on mtx, then quit if they want(could'nt care less, they've already spent a big amount of what they can) These new players would not mind mtx as they do not know how RS was about effort/time to earn xp, not irl money. So yh, the vision might have been to just make rs3 a commercial mobile game like any other which btw, is not sustainable for long term game development and retaining players.

Hey ravlar!!! Great video!! It shows a lot of research on the subject!! The problem with the lack of updates is that the MTX revenue is being spent on more MTX, rather on better content. You see that every week Jagex has come up with new promotions showing new pieces of armour, artwork, coding, etc that results in an improvement of the MTX side of the game! The sad part about this is that these pieces of armour, graphics design, etc that are being used now could be instead implemented as a graphical rework for example of an old area!

Man I’m really sick of hearing people complain about mtx. But I will see your video was very well done. Honestly imo jagex needs mtx to continue to produce a game, otherwise they will decide it’s not worth the time and money investment to keep it going. Everyone needs to remember this game is 19 years old. Most of the people playing I would wager are still playing because it’s a game they grew up playing but now have families and full time jobs, maybe kids of their own and because that core player base is aging it’s resulting in a lower member count. You want to attract a younger generation then you have find a way to make runescape exciting because let’s face it, the younger generation of video gamer isn’t into long Grindy games like runescape, they want fast paced games like fortnite. So if mtx is something that will draw them in so they can skip the grind then I’m all for jagex continuing to promote mtx and make money so they can keep the game I love going.

So my question would be how do you feel that mtx are impacting other aspects of the game? Are they taking dev time away from content to come up with new mtx promotions( genuine question i don’t know). As far as the false promises go I understand your point of view, and I do often think jagex bites off more than they can chew in terms of promising updates ect, in that regard I wish they would wait until things are certain or almost complete before announcing things( which I feel they are getting better at) if you are meaning their explanation of why their mtx profits have gone down then yeah I can see your point as it does seem like they lied to us but honestly that doesn’t matter to me. I don't feel attacked at all you have been very articulate in your response so thanks for your time. The issue is that Jagex need to address it, if MTX is going to be stronger than before, tell us it is here to stay. The key point is that there is no new content to distract these players who are screaming about it, I genuinely think that people are so pissed off because they have nothing to do and all they see are MTX promos. It is a tough situation for Jagex, it really is. One-third of their revenue is MTX, so they literally can't neglect it. But at the same time, neglecting the other aspects of the game to focus on MTX is unforgivable IMO.

Ravlar RS I could not agree more, if they are flat out pushing updates back or diverting what would ordinarily be content dev time, in favor of new mtx promotions or ideas, then that is a really really bad look, I’m just not sold on the idea that, that is what is happening. I think you are seeing slower updates for a variety of reasons. I hope it gets fixed and I again agree they should address the situation, I’m just not sure anything they say at this point, aside from they are completely dropping mtx all together would actually cull the haters that are speaking out, and I simply think that response is wholly unrealistic and unnecessary. The situation to me appears to be a lose lose for jagex at this point, wether it’s their own doing or not I don’t have the answer.

I just want to say that bonds and TH was not the problem as it's actually a great quality of life aspect of the game to speed up the thousands of hours of progression for those who want to try end game content. The problem lies in the lack of control, restriction and ease of payment that had attract people from outside the Runescape community.

Great video, man. I recently found your content after Melad hosted your stream. I’m glad I did! Anyway, I think it’s quite sad that Jagex is investing so heavily in the short term profits rather than redesigning the MTX model. I suppose they could be working on a redesign without telling us, but it’s hard to have any faith in that in the current state of the game. I think they should double down on the cosmetic stuff, like in Solomon’s Store. I know that people want more in game content; I do too. However, this would still be much more sustainable than the current pay to win model. & they can and should still develop more in game cosmetics and content obviously.

But I have been wondering since Jagex is up for sale right now if they are trying to boost there revenue to get a better sale? Also idk what England defines as gambling but I don’t think mtx is gambling because u are getting what you pay for. Better xp,items and gp. But I do agree that people who do use the mtx in th that it can become a slippery slope buy one pack of keys and next ur just buying another to get something else in game done. I think it’s a double edge sword I don’t mind people getting xp at all from it Becouse not every one has a much time to play the game. But I think once a skill hits 99 you shouldn’t be able to use th on those skills just to keep the high score table from being to affected. Also no more lucky armor/ weapons.

Some people don’t care for the grind or so called “achievements” like getting maxed. Some people play purely for bossing and increasing the value of their spirit shard stack and so they will pay to unlock the content they want to reach faster. If the content they are interested in is locked behind lvls they will pay if they don’t want to grind.

Honestly i think a lot of what you said is true, but, honestly the problem is rs3 mtx has to support both osrs and rs3, and with rs3 mobile no being out for ios and not being available to f2p is what hurt it the most. Yes I love the game and don't want to see it die down, but I think it is also necesary now adays, there are many games where people like to p2w which is entirely in their right, and those people give us the priveledge to buy bonds with gp instead of cash. So imo it's okay, just not the rewards currently available on it, maybe something like osbuddy and alt1 built into the game which you could rent out for real world currency not bonds, would be nice. Might solve their revenue issues and therefore removing the p2w aspect and replacing it with a p2afk aspect.

Superb video on MTX, the best and most detailed. I don't think government should get involved but I agree 100% with this video. If government were to get involved who knows what else they would try and legislate against in gaming... they could for example say that RS is too addictive and has to change it's levelling system to be less "predatory".

My problem with mtx is what they are putting in their, by all means make your profit is the company goes broke the game dies but if they keep up these way to op transactions the game dies also, IMO I personally loved seeing the cosmetic over rides, the walking animations, and pet overrides. I actually bought keys myself to get some of those old rewards, and with the old lamps/bonus do stars maybe had around 100-130kxp and 130-150k bxp in skillz at 99, it was op enough but not so much I felt is was breaking the game like it is now

After the legislation passes perhaps they'll solve the problem the right way and just make membership cheaper and thus more accessible. I don't know how much it costs to be a member on RS with monthly payments but I imagine it costs more than a Netflix subscription which tbh is just unacceptable. I used to pay cash for my memberships and gladly support them but now I just use in game money using the disaster mechanic they introduced themselves to try and scoop up the would-be third party gold buyers: bonds. But with all these ridiculous promos it seems bonds just continue to raise in price and casual players are left with a no-win situation. Members should be less than or equal to $10 a month imo.

Love the data but i dont think a decline in players would be a (good) reason for a decline in mtx. People who quit because of mtx most likely did not buy keys anyway, whales do buy keys. Lack of content would be a good reason. 2017 was a really bad year for content and mtx. In that year Jagex received a lot of backlash and they did tone it down - for only a short period unfortunately. I also think we should say th instead of mtx. Most people dont mind mtx if theyre cosmetic only (Solomons). People do mind the frequency of strong promotions.

For the sake of discussion, I cannot play the game 30+ hours a week as I did in 2008. I can't even play 4 hours straight on any day of the week. Runescape is a game that requires dozens of hours of play for even the most minor stepping-stone achievements (I've been trying to get 80 divination for literally 3 years). Most importantly, I no longer have the desire to compromise my eating, hygiene, sleeping and overall health for these achievements as I did in 2008. I'm genuinely sorry but I support microtransactions. I've had my account "Jay v M" since 2002 and if I don't feel like grinding anymore I've earned it.

Jacques Bonny my problem with this is that youre contradicting yourself. If you want to feel good about having high stats, how are you going to feel good about just putting in your card details and getting good stats? Theres no point in doing that because getting xp from training skills is the point of the game. Even if you cant play as much as you did nothing is stopping you from playing a little from time to time from what i can tell. Ruining the game with mtx just so you can have instant gratification in the form of cheating the grind, just so you can have stats to be proud of is kinda selfish imo. If you dont feel like grinding then dont play the game because grinding IS the game. You might not realize but rs3 playerbase is dying, and it seems like jagex is trying to cash out with mtx before it dies completely, becomes unprofitable and is scrapped altogether

It's pretty simple why they are pushing micro transaction after Parliament. Jagex believes Parliament will stop the micro transactions and they are pushing hard to make as much as they can. It's not that hard to figure it out why they are offering more experience items than ever before. It would be to difficult to come out with new content to actually hold players from leaving. Jagex is way out of touch when you need to 4 tick or switch so much to fight higher tier monsters. If they just compared old vs R3 you could clearly see that majority people want a good quality game instead of a so complicated game.

(precursor: im a little heated and after re reading my comment before posting and cooling off a little im going to leave it as is, instead of trying to reword it calmly. it's how i feel. Betrayed, undervalued for decades of love to the game, and 100% over Jagex's lies.) The content, when they finally do put it out, is not balanced and is just stupid. Example: Quest shop having a T75 (for all styles ffs) weapon available for reaching a small amount of total quest points. Entire vampire quest line, which has many hard requirements; a once great milestone for an ironman account to obtain a T70 weapon, no longer worth grinding out. Even the reward for River of Blood's awesome sunspear unlock is just barely better and takes significantly more commitment to get. Stupid. Events where you run around a rock for hours and obtain ungodly amounts of agility xp, or stand at the GE and get free summoning xp Stupid. Having the best skilling outfits in the game locked behind treasure hunter. (if even exclusively for a short period) Stupid. Having too op of training methods and waiting for months if not years to nerf it. Stupid. I have devoted so much time into this game, and just like the rest of us, the higher ups in the company don't give a rats ass about our loyalty. It's the constant up in your face mtx that drive a lot of people away. I cant even stand to log in anymore, the content is dull, everywhere I turn theres a new promotion or some crap begging for my credit card. No other game I play have a market model like rs3 does. It's a cash grab and theres so many different varieties of mtx. Bonds, solomons store, keys etc. Constant overpowered promotions where it devalues any significant work or time you've invested. Huge lack of content and when there is content its only aimed at end game players. May not be a big deal for end game players but for longevity of the game it's a bad business model because people will eventually quit. Then what? I think the company is in over their heads and the new light being brought on them is only going to escalate the mtx until they're forced to make changes. This is all just my opinion but I don't see a long term future with rs3. I have given up with it myself, just too many other games nowadays that dont throw cash grabs in your face everytime you play. Edit: great video rav, I think you hit the bullets with this video and laid out the important points players need to keep in mind.

Nothing wrong is wrong with mxt. What if you want to use fine and if you don’t then don’t, just down to people choices. Mxt since rs3 is coming to mobile it probably needs it or not, compared to other games, like games on the iOS or Android games there are load of games were they get you to pay, for in game content or new characters, just to make you feel you advancing in the game if people want to buy its there choice, what the big noise coming from mxt about? Since mxt is every in every game we play. Just people complaining about how others are future in their game, compared to other people in game in terms of level or exp. If that person comes addicted he probably need to get help and hopes he realises the situation he in and get help he deserves. It like the lottery you get loser and winner how could any tackle gambling online in law. You probably put in down to parents or adults to watch there kids play as game or keep your credit care secure, if ur an adult it’s probably to keep but you ur self have some responsibility. Maybe the money from mxt can go to a good cause or something like thereal lottery were they help out community or charities and we see positive news or use that money for better in game updates. But they have worked with charities before like the princess trust, mind.

They should make a monthly login/ play bonus where the prizes get better the more you log in with 50 unlocks a month. A member who logs in and plays lets say 25/30 days can get all of the unlocks by getting their two keys a day but if you miss a day or if you are a non member you can buy a treasure hunter keys to catch back up. This fixes gambling, provides incentive for logging in, playing, and keeping membership. Lets say after you have played for 15 minutes on an account you get a key and members get a bonus key just for logging in each day.

Yet another “MTX is bad” video MTX doesn’t give you anything you couldn’t get ingame, except cosmetics, maybe. But here even possibility to use TH without paying - daily challenges, spending gp to bond and then convert it to THkeys, doing quests. I don’t spend a single cent on MTX and still can get decent amount of bXP or some fun thing out of it. Yeah, skipping through the content is bad, I understand it, but if you don’t want to spend weeks farming wisps for divination, because you “grind” all day in IRL, but you really like Runescape world, story or other activities, that’s locked behind grind - I’ll don’t mind if you have opportunity to skip some of it. And if you more of old school type - just play IM or don’t use MTX. Maybe they need to introduce some sort of MTX free regime, where you could still use trade, banks and GE, but you could flex on others that “yo, I reach all that goals without MTX!” But I think that’s loadstones is more damaging for game, lol. Thins system completely ruined all traveling, why bother to spend time to learn magic and agility, unlock fairy rings, spirit trees, buying teletabs, if you already have free tp around all world? And p, what’s even worse - in OSRS when you finally unlock some fast travels, even a simple one like agi. shortcut between Lumbridge and Varrock, or Ardy Cloak 1... you really feel good, you now just want to be in Ardy more, you bound to this place, cause now it’s special, you still walking around very slowly, BUT here you can get really fast. That’s sooooo good feeling, that if Jagex could somehow gently get rid out of loadstones - I don’t mind ever more MTX, maybe I even spend buck or two on it
