A "lack of new content" is not necessarily a bad thing when you're talking about arguably the most content rich game in gaming's history. I get that people get bored, but this is definitely an issue that is constantly blown out of proportion. There is so much to do in this game. Can't really blame the game devs for not keeping up with your bored-o-meter if you aren't able/willing to experience the content there already is. I often see the argument made that, "these aren't updates, these are patch notes!". In reality, patch notes details what was done in an update, so it is still very much an update. Others will argue that Ninja Strikes aren't content, as if rebuilding older content to make it live up to current standards doesn't take up time/resources. I am most assuredly not against new content and I agree it is necessary in order to keep the game relevant. However, I also understand the fact that we, as a playerbase, have to manage our expectations. If Jagex has released a new piece of content every week for the past 10 years, it doesn't really mean that this is how it always will be, or even the way it should be. Power creep is a very real thing, and also something which Runescape is dangerously close to having by a crippling degree. EoC preemptively mitigated a lot of it upon release but that was years ago, and a lot of care needs to be taken by the devs to make sure that new content not only satisfies players but also leaves room for future content. I believe that major new content, specifically ones that directly impact a player's power in PVM, will be released at a slower pace as time goes on, unless they can come up with a clever way to reduce the power creep that the game has accumulated in the last 20 years. I don't see this as a bad thing. It's an unfortunate situation that is inevitable when you have enjoyed the same game for 20+ years. We just need to be a little more understanding of the situation.

There will always be entitled mofos. Those are the ones that don't really know what they want. Just because you've played RS since it was conception, doesn't mean it was made for you. Jagex is a company above all, and they'll appeal to trying to produce content for everyone, not just the minority who finished "everything" in the game. Good for those that have done everything in the game, but that's also a fault on their own. There's ABSOLUTELY nothing you can do to fix that. Enjoy a different game for now and come back with fresh new eyes after you've taken a break.

Haven't played RS3 in well over a year. Was playing on a HCIM with all stats 90+ and about 80% of quests done. I started getting into the new Land out of Time content and attempting some more bosses like QBD and Armadyl but then put myself on hold and didn't get back into it. Haven't been motivated to get back into it now, and wouldn't know where to begin with the vast amount of stuff I still need to do.

I really like that you talked about the lack of competitive modes in Runescape 3 you are 100% right on that final section of your video. I thoroughly enjoyed Dimension of the Damned and because they couldn't perfect the Miasma part of the challenge in the final stage they scrapped the ENTIRE thing saying they will NEVER do it again. I get that it was a problem, I myself was killed by glitchy miasma and unable to participate after looking forward to it for weeks, but I didn't care I wanted them to do away with it and just go for the person with the highest score without it. It was brilliant and fun, even if they brought it back now I would be so excited to do the runs again and get the highest score I could! Even if that isn't your cup of tea, there are many other creative ways to have tournament or competitive modes in RS3 using all of our bossing and combat style knowledge and putting it into something we can feel proud about. One thing I would add is every other MMORPG does not have tradeable discontinued rares like RS3 that people love to try and purchase. They are a huge draw for many people to continue pushing through bosses on top of all of the highest armour, weapon, prayers and perks. WoW, Guild Wars 2 (has some, but indistinguishable), Black Desert all are similar, but lack discontinued items that (as broken as phat prices are) are appealing to go for.

100% agree with everything you said. I absolutely love the game and have been playing for a decade at least, and keep coming back to it. To me, the problem with lack of updates is that I pay a subscription fee. I don't subscribe for patch notes (in my opinion, fixes should be free in any game). Like you said, fresh new content should be planned, advertised, and implemented regularly. There was a time when I was excited every Monday to read up on the new patches, even for small updates. Now it's sad to read over a few dozen typo fixes and a minor fix being advertised as an "update".

Great video Ravlar. I hope you enjoyed your break from RS and although sorry about the circumstance, glad that you are back for a time. In a further idea I would like to suggest is it would be a fantastic idea to get Andrew, Paul and Ian back to work on Runescape, even if as part-time consultants I think they would be a fantastic source of inspiriation and energy in multiple levels. Them coming back to the new technologies would be able to suggest more creative ideas in conjunction with their original ideas during Runescape's growth years, from furthering old quest lines, ideas for the "Remasters" and potentially even new sails... skills... haha but who knows, Andrew has been working on a new Game engine but I imagine they would love to come back and help support the game and nourish the creative levels with the original Runescape charm. My 2 cents :-)

? They were also responsible for removing free-trade/wilderness. Ian was working on OSRS for a while and left. If the others wanted to stay involved they wouldn't have sold their shares in the company. They are also largely responsible for the condition the game is in.

@@ap9929 They were trying to fix a serious issue with a unique and decidely WRONG approach, widely recognized and regretted. In the documentary interview their true feelings are abundantly clear and the pressures of running such a large company is undoubtedly a massively stressful position. Which is why I recommended them as Consultants. Advisors. Grand Vizier's. Diplomats of an original Runescape time frame... truly in a sense the "Fourth Age Gods" returning to the summoning of their creations . The only way I can agree with your last statement is in the fact that THEY CREATED THE GAME, therefore they are responsible for the state that it is in, but they have not been responsible since 2011/12? as to the current state of the game. Imagine if they had created the Bond idea instead of taking away the wilderness? Unfortunately we cannot change the past but we can learn from it and in my opinion they are by far the 3 most important aspects of Runescape's character and should be Respected and Interacted with. Especially with the company being bought by an American company and Mod Warden taking a firm control of the Runescape 3 ship, I think they would be excellent additional support staff.
@ap9929
@ap9929 4 жыл бұрын
@@shanemiller4262 The new company is a shell company for the Chinese firm to prevent being forced to sell Jagex to pay off their debts. They don't want to sell Jagex because it's their literal cash cow for how high their profit margins are. This has been documented online, I'd look for a source but you should be able to find it. If you can't, let me know and I'll try finding something. Yes, they created the game in RuneScript, which in itself is an issue because it's basically a new programming language. You're going to have a tough time hiring outside developers when you have to teach them a new programming language. We're seeing these issues down the line with everything being stalled due to "engine work" because so few people know the engine at this point. The game also can't handle a lot of players on screen which is a development issue. The support side has always been questionable and so has player communication. I can't really think of a single time in history when support or communication was really present, Gowers or not being present. These same issues continue, which makes it seem like it's more of a company culture issue that continues to live on.
@shanemiller4262
@shanemiller4262 4 жыл бұрын
@@ap9929 That is sad to hear about the shell company aspect of it, I was hoping it had been bought by a company with serious intentions of bringing the game to a new state of Glory. Also I would like to again point out I suggested bringing them back as "Consultants, Advisors". Not as builders and developers necessarily. It is an idea to bring creativity and the original Runescape Essence and Life back into it. The game has already been part way converted with the NXT client. I started playing Runescape in September of 2001, communication and support was NOT part of the Gower brother's strong suite. Very clear watching the documentary. I had to search and find Tip.It in order to figure out how to play the damn game when i started, (right click axe, left click use, right click tree, left click cut, fail. right click axe.....) But I am still here 19 years later... off and on of course, but because of the game and world and environment created by the Gower's, nourished and flourished by the community. People make mistakes, people have different strong suites. Embrace people for their strengths and find someone else to take care of the other aspects. We just had PAG come up with 300+ QoL and other theings to fix and deal with, Ninja's are doing fantastic improvement work. What could be so horrible about bringing back the original creators for enhancement work?

In my opinion post wars retreat I think auras are in a good place. You only really need them for high level pvm and by time you get there you should have access to all the auras. Also the auras being almost a necessity helps maintain vis wax prices which also helps maintain rune prices while also somewhat limiting how much you grind high level bosses which helps keep their drops more valuable. It seems to me that it is balance fairly well.

Everyone is so negative about RS and Jagex we forget to look at the positives of what keep us playing and got us to play in the first place. Some are critical because we just care so much. Playing a game for 14 years you see it grow, you grow with it. We just want to see the game we love thrive. My favorite thing is what you said, the vast amount of content that RS has to offer. I feel sluggish and want to click every couple of minutes while watching youtube. Netflix, etc... I can do exactly that. I want to go sweaty with PvM I can do that. I want to go for capes of accomplishments I can do that do. Whatever your playstyle is you can find something that matches it in-game and that's wonderful. Plus like you said you will always be able to find something that shares your enthusiasm because the community is really what this game is built around.

i agree with all your points rav, but with these delays/lack of content it's actually happening a lot with other gaming developers/companies along with there lack of communication with the community. Which i don't understand.. I feel we have community managers on twitter/insta/reddit ect for these reason to explain why things are being held up when we should expect these updates just some clarity would be nice. in my opinion developers seem to think its okay to take our money and make empty promises whilst we hold onto the idea of 'its coming soon'. But i hope we have a bright future with RS3 when ever they do roll out updates they're great

The PvM cost is a big one for me. I want to get better at it, but I simply can't afford it. I try to boss for money but my luck with drops is miserable so I rarely ever break even. The worst part is that PvMers that can handle it and afford it don't see it as a problem and have many have told me that it is specifically my fault for being poor. No other MMO has such a huge gap just to access content. Final Fantasy XIV, a game i've been playing recently, gives you access to almost everything using basic gear other than "savage" and "extreme" raids which are specifically for people with high end gear. RuneScape could really benefit from adapting the enrage system to more bosses so that anyone with basic gear can approach it, but people with the best gear can still be much better rewarded. I also feel how bad the game is at teaching you. I dragged a friend who got me into FF14 into RuneScape and I felt like i had to be there every step of the burthope tutorial because he didn't understand what the game was trying to make him do. RuneScape is so different from a traditional MMORPG it NEEDS a tutorial SPECIALLY meant to teach you the nuances for RuneScape. I do, however, disagree slightly about the "navigating a spaceship" comparison. RuneScape has much less menuing to go through than traditional MMOs while being much more customizable. The issue is more-so that options that SHOULD be readily accessible (e.g. combat xp) are tossed into settings rather than the relevant menus. Even worse some menus (like clicking the summoning special bar to access auto scroll casts) are hidden and if it weren't for the wiki I would have no clue they existed. Hell, while it seems like common knowledge that the leprechauns can note your produce, there is nothing in the game that tells you this is a thing. Players just know it from word of mouth since many of us played when the patch came out. I've been sending dozens of reports to the ninja team based on complaints from my friends I dragged into the game because they have a whole different perspective than someone like me who has played for years and just knows. I can only hope these things are addressed in the future.

I disagree on the point about delays. ALL games developers delay their releases from internally targetted release dates ALL the time, the only difference is that those missed dates have not been communicated to us players. People rag on Jagex about their communication, which is sometimes fair, but we only know about delays because those original targets are communicated to us in the first place. The patch notes too - I don't feel typos are being 'passed off as updates'. They are typo fixes, no one is suggesting otherwise. We get itemised patch notes because we asked for them to be itemised.

I agree with some of this, but the only players who have any room to complain about content are trimmed comp cape holders in my opinion, this game is so content rich already that I don't feel like a couple of months without content is a problem, HAVING SAID THAT a lot of the content is outdated, we've got players that can do 100k damage in seconds and KBD boss has 50k lifepoints, so maybe updating dead content could be focused on if anything. Aside from that i do agree that the focus on live streams that are goofy and just the mods having fun is kind of annoying when they don't actually address any issues or aren't allowed to talk about half the questions they're asked. Personally (being someone who doesn't have the ability to pvm because of costs) I don't think the cost of pvm is a problem, you can make 5 million coins an hour doing almost anything in the skilling or mid level combat brackets and with how many hours most skills take if you're doing profitable methods by the time you get to 99 costs aren't an issue. So when we're talking about things that are 5-10 times more profitable than doing a 5m an hour afk mining session i think there should be a definitive barrier to entry due to the increased rewards for time and effort spent, having said that a lot of high tier pvm is available with very low cost to entry as demonstrated by the RS Guy doing telos and most other bosses in budget gear in all of his guides just to prove that it can be done for beginners. i 100% agree auras need to be removed or reworked, having to wait 4 hours without refreshes to play the content effectively makes absolutely no sense and is very frustrating! either create a permanent buff from the auras or scale up hit chance in game in general and remove the auras, replacing them with different potion effects would even be an improvement, but something needs to be done. focusing on returning players is a good way to repair the damage they caused with the horrible release of eoc, which made me quit for a few years as well, but i do agree there needs to be improvement to the beginner experience, free to play isn't as bad as you made it out to be for someone brand new since they don't know how much better members is first hand, but there definitely is a very limited area of play when first joining the game.

As someone who has played Runescape for over 16 years, I share the passion for the game like many of us here do. You know it when Monday becomes the most exciting day of the week, just because there is the chance that we get something new or updates to improve our gaming experience. I don't expect new groundbeaking content every week or even every month, but I totally agree that long content droughts and the massive delays in announced content can be very disappointing. That being said, I still think that Runescape has a lot to offer, and I usually just focus on the stuff that I love and less on the negative side of things. But I also think it is important for things like these to be said and I hope our voices get heard by not just the game developers who I believe are just as passionate about the game, but also the higher ups that ultimately have the say in the direction of the game. Oh and I wanted to say that I love your choice of RS OST in this video!

Revolution in my mind is a lazy solution and more of a bandaid than a fix. I would love it if they did away with the 0.6 tick system and made the combat a bit more arpglike, I think it would suit the game much better while making the game far more engaging in a fun way and feel less of a chore engaging in combat.

I don't agree with a lot of things, even with some of your positives and a lot of things have been forgotten about over the years due to time. You can find questionable things going back 15+ years if you really wanted to. There has been extremely poor balance and care about previously added content by Jagex all around. RS3 continues to pretend it's some sort of startup MMO where you can pile on content and ignore previously added content. When there are concerns or issues Jagex eventually gets to them but it could take years and years. This has completely eroded any sense of achievements in the game for the playerbase, without mentioning microtransactions. Think back to the days of EffigyScape. Released in 2010 they would become the meta way to train slower skills, like RC and EffigyScape wouldn't get addressed till Feb 2012, that's a year and a half of eroding player achievements, skilling content, skilling methods, etc. Think about the original RuneSpan release, it was built completely without care for the previous RCing methods, content or player achievements. Think about crystallize, which was added in 2015, which made hunter have some crazy rates. It would take Jagex FOUR years to address. Have something very recent: ED3 changes. It took Jagex over a year (again) to address new player leeching ED3 to get gamebreaking exp rates. Dungeoneering is dead and itself hasn't been touched in a decade (outside of adding some new rewards for token sinks). Climbing boot update. Most of the content and landmass is literally dead. This list is endless. Even Pips on RuneFect 2019 would say how players have been asking for a more responsive game, yeah... since EoC in 2012... 7 whole years before Jagex attempted anything. EoC. The whole concept doesn't even make sense. The original argument was that future content (after chaotics I guess) would be extremely hard to scale w/o breaking the game. So to address a future problem they decided to redesign the entire combat system for content that wasn't even in the game yet? Revolution wouldn't be added to the game for over a year. Revolution++ wouldn't be added to the game for over 6 years. A number of abilities are still not even used and haven't been buffed in years. So what did we end up with? New content that doesn't scale and broke the game... Think about it, with t90s, decent invention perks, arch relics, etc. 99.99% of the combat content is easymode. I'm pretty sure they spent more time developing mining + smithing rework than design to launch of EoC. PvP. Is this even worth mentioning? Completely hated and disregarded by Jagex for over 15 years. Not surprising this is dead. Claw rushing, virtus + divine + SoA, korasi, gano ragging, pack yaks, ragging in general, chaotics, flasks, etc. completely broke and killed the PvP. I'm sure Jagex will try a once-every-4 year wilderness rejuvenation though. Even when brews were originally added in a random update in 2005, their impacts and dramatic game changing influence were never really thought about. Graphics. They aren't even uniform across the entire game, certain places are clearly nice to look at while other places haven't been touched in over a decade. People are worried about microtransactions and content updates and such but it's pretty obvious that the culture at Jagex stinks and that the game is going to go maintenance mode sooner or later. The design philosophy over at OSRS at least makes sense. I'm not sure if it's because Jagex management are hands off the game due its own success or what. Anyway, I don't think there is any potentially saving of this game. The game is all over the place, the design philosophy doesn't make sense, it doesn't have a targeted playerbase (it clearly isn't casuals since the game isn't modern in any sense of the world [poor performance, archaic tick system, outdated combat systems by modern standards, highly repetitive grinding loops], hardcore playerbase [erosion of player achievements, the combat system change, microtransactions etc], pvmers [maybe? but it isn't going to attract new players with its currently dated combat system vs other MMOs.], pvp [lol]. You can enjoy the game and play it with these flaws for fun, I do :), but I don't think this game will ever really improve unless Jagex was to take it seriously and invest in modernizing it. I don't think this will ever happen because Jagex rather spend their money on developing a whole new MMO (which will die/get canceled). Feel free to take a look at Jagex's Wikipedia page and check how many of their games in total (developed/published/canceled) are still breathing.

What's up with the negative attitude? If you don't want your achievements to be "devalued" with new, more enjoyable or afk methods, you hate the combat system, and you like pvp, you should play osrs not rs3. You just named two core features of the main game (new training methods and combat updates) as things you dislike when they're built into it.
@ap9929

Where is the negative attitude? It's called being realistic. Until Runefest 2019 the population was the lowest in all of RS history. Record lowest amount of content development, investing into a new MMO when your flagship product is declining in player count, and highest levels of monetization pretty much always a step somewhere before a game going on maintenance mode. You can have new training methods without killing everything else. And I really doubt you do all or any of your combat on full manual anyway? Let me guess, you use revo++ for 99.999999% of your combat encounters.

Man I have to disagree with the content thing. Runescape has TOO MUCH content it’s off putting for new/returning players. You feel like you can’t catch up. It’s cool that you’re a top player, but the majority of people are not at an endgame level. If Jagex keeps appealing to the 1% that can kill endgame bosses with ease then they’re going to lose players.

For me I think it was 2017 that started the era of rs3 that I no longer enjoy. Ever since the "interesting" release of Menaphos something changed and I just don't find the same enjoyment that I had with 2014-2016 rs3. I haven't kept too close of a watch over rs3 but the only update that interests me since I left is Archaeology. From the looks of it overall the community seems to be fairly positive about it.

Video looks like a tunnel vision of a PvMer but has absolutely no idea why Runescape became popular in the first place and why a large chunk of people left the game in the first place. Multi-way PvP was broken at the time of EoC release, it is broken now. Team PvP is dead, and clan vs clan content is dead. Jagex is trying to appease a niche playerbase which is a minority on the Internet. They are ignoring the undisputed king of content for online games that is PvP.

Hey Micro Max, I respect your view. Jagex tried really hard to boost PvP in RS3 but for whatever reason, it didn't go well. They put a lot of resources into BH reworks etc, and it was content that was ignored. As a result, they realized that this current community isn't interested in. I understand that PvP is an engaging and fun aspect of many games but it really doesn't work well for RS3.

@@ravlarrs4373 I don't accept that as an honest reason from Jagex. I believe it can be fixed and revived given the right kind of investment and time. BH was a personal project with merely one JMod working on it with a severe lack of understanding on how team pvp works. The main reason why PvP got killed was because of the lack of understanding of the head game designer, Jagex's tendency to try and copy success off games like WoW, and Jagex's internal policy of trying to avoid competition with OSRS for PvP content. Those are just poor decisions, and Jagex has a long history of poor decisions.

Lol it's been a while since I saw anything Runescape related. Looks like the same old deadbeat story from 2012 is still a thing now. PvP is still dead, even clans are dead it seems. Jagex don't care, nor do these partnered youtubers that are merely there as Jagex's mouthpiece trying to promote the game. I used to play the game since RS2 came out, I was in a large pking clan. Runescape was crazy popular back in the days. We endured the no-wildy era up until Jagex shoved EoC in everyone's face. All my friends left the game, and eventually I did too. Don't have time to waste on OSRS to train those levels back up. Not coming back. The game is dead except for people who cling to nostalgia or a few that enjoy some obscure game that's a ghost of its former self.

@@ravlarrs4373 Do you realize how small the said "current community" is, compared to other successful games out there? Runescape is missing out on a very large playerbase that has been alienated because of a broken game lacking PvP support and competitive content that it once had.

I couldnt watch futher as you said combat system is fantastic piece of content. It is not.. I'll give it to rs3 that it's combat and end game pvm has the highest skill ceiling i've seen in any game, but that doesn't make up for the fact that combat is buggy and laggy as hell. all because of the slow 0.6 tick rate the server rides on. If they'd fix that, rs3 would have the best combat of any game i know.

Honestly, if I was a new player considering playing rs3 I definitely wouldn’t. The cons far outweighs the pros shown in the video imo. I sounds like terrible management and a terrible future. And with the management not communicating with the player base(maybe because they don’t know much themselves) would be enough to turn me away from the start. Sucks :/
