The T2 4K transfer reminds me of one of those 240p Ai upscales from KZbin. Looks like if it was upscaled from the 1080p version to 4K using Ai to smooth out grain and a very different color grade. From what I’ve read, the transfer was sourced from a 3D master. Shame that this even passed quality control. Almost made me question what happened here.

Oblivion was shot in 2K. So it’s a case of a bad upscale.

It's funny you say that, because I have a 4k TV and a blu ray oblivion and I explain to people that oblivion looks like a 2k on my 4k lol now I know why.

It was not shot in 2K (more like 4.5K and 8K), but the DI Master file is 2K.

If I had the chance to go back in time, I wouldn't bother upgrading to 4k. The difference between DVD and Blu Ray was phenomenal and worth every penny, the difference between Blu Ray and 4k can be slight, and on some discs, 4k can look worse.

With a good TV properly set up a good 4K transfer can look significantly better than Blu-ray transfer. But, much like music, it really depends on the love and effort put into the final product.

4K is worth it for HDR. Many movies (especially action and comic book movies) use 2K digital intermediate files due to all the CGI. But Blade Runner, original trilogy Star Wars, many classic films in 4K, John Wick, Top Gun and Top Gun Maverick, wow... These look amazing in 4K. It's all about physical media. Streaming doesn't cut it. Netflix and other's "optimize" the stream (i e. Cut down the bitrate to below bluray levels). Physical media all day everyday.

I think 4k is worth owning but it isn't worth it to upgrade your entire collection. Like only only get a 4k over a blu ray if it's one of your favorite movies, if you get s really good deal or if the blu ray transfer sucks.

To me the "Oblivion" 4K looks less sharp and has worse colors. But it does have Atmos...

Oblivion is a tough one because at times it doe look better. What type of sound system do you have? If you have a good proper Atmos I would say give the 4K a shot. Anything short of a proper Atmos setup, go Blu-ray.

Mines is the Amazon versions of Batman and Batman Returns they had to use Teal for the color grading which they also remove the original sound effects so I rebought the 2013 Blu-ray which has no color correction which makes me feel like its back to normal of how I remember watching it in theatres. Sadly the HBO MAX versions are the 2019 4K transfers so no need to buy the movies to see how bad the transfers are.

For Oblivion one reason to upgrade is to get the Atmos soundmix. Jupiter Ascending is one I actually liked. No matter what one may think of the movie, if you have a good Atmos sound setup, you owe to yourself to watch this at least once. If you have a soundbar I will default to don't watch this. Bourne Identity is the DTSX sound. I don't think that unless you are doing side by side comparison anyone would see the difference in picture. I got my X-Men First Class trilogy set cheap on 4K. I am ok with it. Because of everything I have seen about Pirates of the Caribbean I have not got. Same with T2. I have seen Forrest Gump and Collateral are pretty bad as well.

I am not convinced height channels really make any difference. You could arguably even get 360 degree sound with a quad setup.

@@stonesfan285 The setup is worth it, it just has to be done right. Throwing speakers up there paying no attention to listener angles and then not doing calibration correctly isn't going to do it. Also studios actually have to provide a good mix as well. Terminator Genysis as example in the bus scene you can visualize the foot steps across the roof. The Doors has a scene where they are in a high rise with the windows open and you hear the cars and sounds of the street. Well with atmos using the base layer in stereo with the height the sound imaging of those sounds seem to come from below you. People claim Top Gun Maverick is top tier Atmos. It is not. It is bombastic and fun but weak in the atmos department. Shang Shi and the 10 Rings has so much opportunity for an incredible atmos mix, all wasted and a disappointment in that regard. You are right about the quad giving 360. A pair can image sound left to right. A pair behind you now give s you front to back. 4 above you now gives you the option to go up and down. Think of quad as x and y axis and then the 4 up above the Z axis.

Oblivion is an Example how to NOT remaster on 4K Disc. Blu-ray has more details and it is way sharper, has better color correction and blacks are more accurate.

I just don't think 4K is really that much of an improvement to where I am going to re-buy all of my movies, especially when they are often $15+. A lot of them seem like they are nothing more than a slightly sharper picture which isn't even noticeable unless I've got my face right in my TV, with a color timing adjustment/HDR. It really just feels like they're trying to resell me something I already bought. Another reason I won't buy 4K anymore is because a lot of the 4K Blu-rays I've gotten do not play correctly or have these little scratches in exactly the same place. And it's because of the Mexico pressing plant. I think I'd rather just stay with Blu-ray.

Sometimes these companies are relying on the HDR overlay to act as the sole measure of film detail and color instead of augmenting the detail and color from the original high-def transfer. So they use an old, crappy transfer and spend the money only on the HDR programing. Instead of scanning in 4K and then programing the HDR on top of that. The point of all this is....*drum roll*....Production Movie companies saying we are ALL stupid and can't tell the difference, so why should they fork out the cost. -_____-

I find a lot of these lists with the complaints, if you have a professional calibrate your TV, a lot of these color problems are fixed. I got an OLED TV in August, and a lot of the colors look like they had a yellow tinge, or had some bad grain to them. I then had my TV calibrated, got a Panasonic 4K player and a lot of these problems I find are harder to spot now. I don’t mean use your Google app on your phone to calibrate your TV, have an actual professional do it for you, but a lot of people won’t pay the money for that or just use the app on their phone. And I know a lot of replies to this are going to say you wasted your money. Well, that’s fine, you’re entitled to your opinion.

I read reviews of 4k discs where people say how great an upgrade it is. I buy it and put it in my 4k player, and go huh? Usually it's horrible colour cast changes, but often I struggle to see any improvement in 'definition' over an upscaled blu ray (perhaps I should thank my Oppo player). I've bought and sold many 4k discs because they aren't worth the ridiculous prices for improvements that I suspect few would notice.

@@mr.electronx9036 Yes the 2017 StudioCanal 4K release is garbage... The 2015 Lionsgate Blu-Ray is the one I'm referring to it used the same transfer at the Japanese Blu-Ray release and was a huge improvement over the SkyNet edition.

I was kind of let down by "The Thing (1982)" as well. There are some shots where you can see the grain fade out, and it doesn't include the original audio mix, it's just the DTS:X remix. I have the Arrow Blu-ray and I think this one is much better. Original audio mixes, no grain inconsistencies, has all the extras.

4k Blurays have yet to impress me that I've only upgraded from Bluray to 4K on select movies I like, just wait a few years and you'll see many 4K discs in the discount bins at Walmart.

@@TheNotoriousNemo as of right now i only collect older dvds for older movies because i prefer watching old movies how they originally looked upscaled to 4k and dvds are dirt cheap now then i buy newer 4k hdr movies on google tv. I just keep the dvds in a dvd storage binder and throw away the cases to save space
