Great content as usual Keith, and useful in helping viewers to avoid some poor transfers of (some) great movies. Couldn’t agree more with you regarding your choices, especially Star Wars and the Cornetto trilogy. Due to space restrictions, I typically trade in or pass on to friends my old Blu Rays almost as soon as I’ve purchased the 4K version. It is poor transfers like those franchises received that now make me think twice about doing this. So frustrating when, like most collectors, you invest in the best equipment you can stretch your budget to for that optimum viewing experience only for a bad transfer to ruin everything.

Why is it none of the crap movies get terrible 4K transfers. It has to be the likes of Star Wars and Jurassic Park that get the worst transfers out there. You are absolutely correct we spend so much money on displays and 4K players and not just that but the prices of these 4K Blu-rays themselves can be quite expensive and to get some Shabby looking transfers can be cruel at times. Just look at the Star Wars collection for an example I actually spent nearly €200 on that release and nearly every single movie looks very underwhelming. Thankfully nowadays I do a bit more homework when it comes to my 4K purchases and I think it's the right way to do it. I'm happy to do videos like this to make people aware of how bad things can get when it comes to 4K transfers especially if you look at the Fallen trilogy that I had at number one in this video. This is a great video, very helpful. I'm one of those collectors who still hasn't made the leap to 4K for financial reasons but I hope to in due course and already buy dual-format editions where the movie is special to me so I can enjoy the Blu-ray now and have the 4K disc to watch further down the line. This is the case with the original Star Wars trilogy where I bought the three individual 4K releases with Blu-ray included although now I am thinking I probably shouldn't have bothered.! I think the major studios are really not doing much to encourage us potential 4K newbies to make the leap from Blu-ray to 4K as there seems to be so many poor 4K releases out there, it is all very off-putting and confusing. Hey Matt. Great to hear that this video could help you out in the future and I have to admit I like what you're doing when it comes to buying Blu-rays. You're picking up some 4K releases and you can use the Blu-rays that you get with them so you're almost preparing yourself for when you jump on to 4k. Unfortunately you are going to pick up some poor looking 4k transfers along the way and it's part and parcel to the whole collecting game. All I can say is do your homework and check out reviews before buying anything and it should help you out quite a bit. The amount of movies that I haven't bought because of people's reviews is amazing. Even the recently released Rocky movies have supposedly underwhelming 4K transfers and I know now to stay away. Great video Keith. It's transfers like these that makes me very hesitant to upgrade movies to 4K. The worst 4Ks I have seen are A Quiet Place, Brightburn and Casino Royale.

I honestly can't remember a quite place or brightburn but I definitely remember Casino Royale. I was so let down by that transfer especially when I seen it for the first time on Blu-ray and how amazing it looks. It's such a shame

It's heartbreaking when you think about it because let's face it Jurassic Park is an astonishing landmark when it comes to what can be captured on film and to see it get this kind of treatment is quite horrible. I was so disappointed with the Jurassic Park transfer, especially when it's a childhood favourite, the emotions are already high so it was a huge blow. I splurged on the 6 film 4k Steelbook box set so at least they look pretty on the shelf I guess! I'm curious which of the HP films are the worst ones? As you mention black levels, 80% of Deathly Hallows 1&2 are dark movies so if they haven't got it right on those two then they're definitely not worth the upgrade!

Hey Hayley. Yes Jurassic Park absolutely killed me when it comes to it's 4K transfer. It's always the good ones that get the poor showings. To be honest the entire Jurassic Park franchise need some work on 4k. Correction The Lost World looks amazing and it makes it even more frustrating how they can get one movie looking so well and yet the rest so poor. The Chamber of Secrets was the first let down in the Harry Potter franchise and then I noticed the Goblet of Fire was quite underwhelming and unfortunately I found the two deathly hallow movies to be the worst of the lot. Particularly part one because it was always a very dark movie and unfortunately the blacks are nothing near as inky as I've come to expect when it comes to 4k. But like I said in the video it's not all doom and gloom when it comes to the Harry Potter series. Just inconsistent. Thank you so much Hayley for stopping by and checking out this video. Very interesting video mate. Some 4k are worth the effort but I heard CGI artists do not work on a 4k quality level because of the sheer size it would take up so I gather most CGI won't look better on 4k.

That's actually a very good point that you made. Some of my most favourite 4K transfers are the non CGI movies. Movies like The Shining for example look spectacular. Even though I have to admit Kong vs Godzilla was next level when it comes to 4k.

When it comes to the Harry Potter collection like I said in the video it's not all doom and gloom because some of the movies do look nice but some of them do look very underwhelming as well. Hi Keith, well I'm mostly surprised as I would had thought that most of these movies especially Harry Potter would had looked stunning like you say because of the black levels as I have an oled and I think it's deathly hallows part 2 and the attack scene which I couldn't make out on my led but on oled looked really good ( Blu ray not 4k) and I just knew your number one would be the fallen movies . Great to hear your thoughts and I'll personally take your word on these as I I won't be going anywhere from oled so I want to see noticeable improvements on and 4k I might buy. Hey Dan. The horrible thing about this top 10 is the movie themselves and how phenomenal they all are. Well maybe not so much the gi Joe movies 😆 😂. Like I said in the video the Harry Potter's are very inconsistent. 1 Movie can look amazing while the other can look very underwhelming and to not get those inky blacks that I expect from movies like Harry Potter is a real shame. I think the biggest disappointment of them all for me has to be the Jack Ryan movies. I am such a fan of that franchise and I remember being so excited to get my hands on them on 4K. It also highlights there should be a minimum 4K standard that is verified independently on a reference monitor to bear the mark...

I still have not adopted 4k, and really helpful videos like this one are part of the reason. The other being expense, of course. It feels like 4k is much more of a minefield than previous formats, the studios having to bring their properties up to a certain quality standard - almost, it seems, for the first time. I'd love to hear your general thoughts on 4k. Has the technology exceeded our source material for some of the older movies?

Hey Daniel. I was actually thinking about doing a video and just talking about 4k in general. None of the new movies that come out nowadays surprise me anymore when it comes to 4K transfers and I think the more obvious upgrades are to be found in older movies. Just check out Alien or The Shining. They look so good that it feels like I'm watching the movies for the first time again and that's what I find lacking when it comes to a lot of more recent movies that come out. Not taking anything away from them they do look amazing but like I said it just doesn't surprise me anymore and it's a testament to how fantastic Blu-rays today look

Hello Keith, great list. I just bought the OT on seperate 4Ks for 13 euro each last Christmas and I thought the picture quality was fantastic whenever it was original footage. That horrible "new" cgi is made even worse by the 4k. But I thought detail was just fantastic overall, since they scanned the negative on 4K it should be. I didnt notice much in the way of dnr but maybe ill check them out again and keep an eye out. Btw are the older blu rays of jurrasic park a better purchase or are they the same dnr as the 25th anniversary release?

If you enjoyed how they looked and I'm presuming we're talking about Star Wars then please don't let me put you off them by shining a light on some of their issues. As a matter of fact I recommend don't go looking for it because as soon as you see it you can't unsee it. Like I said in the video everybody has a different viewing experience and it's great to hear that you enjoyed them. As for the Jurassic Park Blu-rays I'm almost certain they're the exact same as a 25th anniversary. But please don't take my word for it I could be wrong

I just did some research and the 2011 release of jurassic park seems unaltered in almost every way. Managed to get the trilogy for 6 euro including shipping so im happy out. Inconsistent really is the word and 4K seems to be a lot more inconsistent than Blu-ray ever was

4K is problematic because many films are digitally scanned at 2K, and from that Digital Intermediate (DI) simply scales to 4K. And on the other hand there are the films that were shot with digital cameras at 2K, there is no more detail to show because the source material is 2K. The idea of paying more just for advanced upscaling makes me feel uncomfortable.

That probably explains the issues with the Harry Potter series. Not taking anything away from 2K upscales because some of the best movies I've seen on 4K have 2K upscales funny enough. Hey Keith no surprise that Disney has a strong showing in that top 10. I do want to see those angel films now for the laugh sometime. I just started Harry potters for the first time and finished the second one, the dts-x was quite good and that scene with the spiders in the cave felt like they were all around my room, some other good scenes with flying aswell. I did cancel the batman sets for now cause I got annoyed seeing some of the others close to 30eur... I'm going to get them individually and wait a little for a price drop, they should drop faster than the previous 5 from last year.

Hey Steve. Yes no big surprise that Disney feature so heavily in this video. They don't give a s*** about 4k. Like I said in the video there is redeeming aspects when it comes to what I showed in this top 10 and sound is one of them and as you pointed out the Harry Potter movies do sound great with that DTS x. It's just a shame the picture quality on the movies are a bit hit and miss. I was able to order the Batman editions from the Warner Brothers website and I got 45% off. So I nearly got two of them for the price of one. There seems to be issues though because Amazon can't seem to get them in stock and Warner Brothers haven't shipped mine either. But you are right I can see a price drop happening on both of these editions quite quickly and I wouldn't blame you for waiting. Thanks again Steve for stopping by

I wanted the Steelbook set of Harry Potter films, but I couldn't find one at a decent price. I ended up buying the "Choo Choo" Set lol. Is the 4k transfer of Thor limited to just that box set, or do you know if the Mondo 4k's have the same transfer? I've been collecting the mondo Marvel Steelbooks so I expect they have the same transfer? I am looking forward to the Superman 4k steelbook set. I know the Superman 4k release was a mixed bag. There's some speculation that this upcoming set may have a new transfer.

To be honest I got very lucky with that Harry Potter Steelbook set. I don't think you could see it in the video but there is a bit of a dent on one of the corners and I was able to get it for very cheap. Very hard to get them nowadays at a good price. Unfortunately when it comes to the Marvel movies on 4K it is the same transfers on every release. So yes the Thor transfer will be the same as the one I'm talking about. Having said that those Mondo steelbooks look fantastic and I think they're worth buying just for the steelbooks alone. I have the Superman collection pre-ordered as well and I actually thought Superman looked very decent on 4k. The opening half an hour doesn't look the greatest because apparently the original reels were in poor condition and that was the best they could get out of it. But for the rest of the movie I think it looks great. I can't see them improving on it too much if it is a new transfer

@@millerman9991 Thanks for the reply! Yeah I ended up with a Batman 4k steel set that has a minor scratch. Impossible to find that now. I ordered the LotR and Hobbit 4k steel sets but Best buy crushed the LotR set and I was lucky to even get a replacement. The Mondos do look great and I have largely been getting them just to collect the steels. Here's hoping we get ones for Hulk and Spidey. That's encouraging to hear about Superman. I still have the Blu-ray anthology. But I never picked up the 4k single so the set is kind of a no brainer for me.

Hey Robert. Like I said at the start of the video everybody's equipment is different and chances are everyone will have a different viewing experience. A New Hope I find to be horribly inconsistent. Just keep an eye out for the frozen grain in the background for a lot of scenes. But it's so much more evidence in Empire and Return. I honestly hope this top-10 helps you in the future and like you said there is some mediocre franchises in here and yes I'm looking at the GI Joe movies 😆 🤣. Hey Colum. Like I said in the video it's not all doom and gloom when it comes to the Harry Potter collection. It was just more inconsistent than anything. I think there's maybe around 3 poor movies in that collection on 4K where the rest of them do look good but they could look better. Just like the Jack Ryan collection horribly inconsistent.

In all fairness you have nothing to worry about. 95% of the time what you are getting on 4K is an upgrade over the Blu-ray. Just like Blu-ray they had their bad releases as well. My advice is just do a bit of homework on whatever release you're looking to buy so at least then you know you're getting something good

@@millerman9991 I just can't justify spending the money on a 4KTV and a UHD Blu-Ray player. Hell I barely give a shit about regular Blu-Ray as it is. I've seen many films get ruined by HD transfers, Se7en is a perfect example, as every HD release of that film tried to make it look more "modern" so it no longer looks like a movie from the 90s and that misses the whole point, the 1997 DVD is still the best way to see that film as it comes the closest to looking like the original first-run in theaters where film prints were bleached using a CCR process(that was changed for the second-run as it proved too costly).

Like I said at the end of the video a lot of these movies that featured in this top 10 do have redeeming qualities and sound is one of them. But not all of these releases have good sound. Just check out the Thor and Iron Man movies. But Jurassic Park does sound quite amazing. It's just a shame the picture quality doesn't match the audio.

Shame about the Harry Potter series, it's such a beautiful boxset, Keith. Sometimes I think when they release some of these 4K movies they forget its actually 2160p and don't always utilize its full capacity, especially with the HDR as well. Lazy, very lazy. With these poor releases, I think you are better off with the blu-ray version. Good video Keith, glad you pointed this out.

You can tell that a lot of these releases were rushed out. I find when it comes to 4K Blu-ray the only reliable sources out there are Boutique labels and Sony themselves. If you noticed in this top 10 there was a lot of Disney some Paramount and Universal. Actually Warner Brothers can be very reliable as well. They have the tools to make these movies look beautiful but they refuse to use them. I really hope this video helps a lot of people when it comes to buying any of the movies in this top 10. I disagree With You I think this latest version and remastering And Back To The Original colours are great. I think it's a matter of taste that you like a lot of original Grain or not. The make a choice to clean the picture and I think it's very nice and Chrisp and it looks awesome, both Disney bluray and the 4k release.I thinh its the best version ever. You can do a review about 4K disc and tell this, and let people decide for themselve. But again... the Star Wars films have the orginal colours more back and the look much more accurate above the 2011 Awful pinkish bluray set. The look now the where made for this age, great HDR, colours and razor sharp. Its not bad at all.....😊

Everybody has their personal tastes and not only that but everybody has different viewing equipment as well so chances are your viewing experience is going to be so different to what I'm seeing. The only thing I will say when it comes to Star Wars particularly the original movies the DNR used on all three of them movies is simply not acceptable. You have to understand if you remove grain you remove detail and that's exactly what happened with the original trilogy. I completely understand why people would like the look of it because some people would rather not see film grain. For me it removes it's filmic look

I hadn’t noticed as much scrubbing on the Star Wars original trilogy but I will take another look at the films again. The only Marvel/Disney release that I really enjoyed was the DOCTOR STRANGE sequel. I felt it looked and sounded good. It didn’t need to be cranked too loud.😊

I never witnessed anything like Disney. They just don't seem to take criticism on board especially when it comes to there Dolby Atmos soundtracks. I don't think I've ever heard a reference sounding movie from Disney and that's terrible when you think about the amount of great movies they have brought out. The original Star Wars movies particularly empire and return have a serious amount of frozen grain. I find it to be horribly distracting especially when you do notice and it's very hard not to. 4K is problematic because many films are digitally scanned at 2K, and from that Digital Intermediate (DI) simply scales to 4K. And on the other hand there are the films that were shot with digital cameras at 2K, there is no more detail to show because the source material is 2K. The idea of paying more just for advanced upscaling makes me feel uncomfortable. The format has a lot of potential but studios often don't make an effort to take advantage of it.

I think when 4K first came out there was a lot of 2k DI but that has massively changed in the last year. Everything that's coming out is native. Not taking anything away from 2K Masters either because some of them look absolutely fantastic. As a matter of fact I done a top 10 of my favourite 2K Masters on 4K and some of them look just as good as any native 4K release. It's largely down to HDR or Dolby Vision.

When it comes to the OG Star Wars trilogy, you have to go for the fan editions (Harmy's despecialized and the 4K projects). There's no way in hell that I would pay for the ruined versions with all the idiotic changes and grotesque inclusions of 90s CGI. This is literally the only time I fully advocate for piracy. The theatrical cuts are landmark achievements in filmmaking, not the 90's special editions.

Some of the special edition changes improve on the originals, the extended Wampa scene, the removal of the cardboard cutout people at the award ceremony, the better emperor hologram, the windows in cloud city, the lightsaber effects, the Endor victory party theme and various other improvements that just polish what was present in the originals. However i will say i can do without MacKlunky, Greedo shot first, Obi wans stupid roar, Vader screaming no, and a few other changes. I think the DVD release is the best balance of improvements without adding too much unnecessary stuff.

Interesting that you don't view the Last Jedi as a big improvement. I don't have the boxset, but I bought the individual TLJ 4K when it was released in 2018, it has Dolby vision and is absolutely stunning. I've been told the newer releases just have standard HDR, so it's probably worth getting ahold of an older copy second hand.

The absurdity of the business; digital cameras developers put a lot of effort to imitate the look of film while home entertainment companies puts their effort in making film look like digital. Film has always look better, thats why digital formats attempt to imitate it, but film has to be scanned properly in 4k or higher resolutions, they have to remaster it in some cases when it hasn't been properly preserved, and that's something the current studios owners are not willing to invest in, even when in the long run they will multiply their money from that remastering while contributing to film preservation and making the audience happy at the same time. I'll like to think that they are forsaking 4k because they are scanning everything for 8k. But that's dreaming too high.

I have to admit that things seem to be a lot better nowadays when it comes to 4K transfers. If you asked me to make a top 10 of my worst transfers of 2023 I don't think I would be able to. Not to say that everything is perfect but nothing near as bad as what's in this top 10. Maybe they are starting to listen. Well that's my hope anyway. I'm just hoping the upcoming releases of Aliens The Abyss and True Lies are going to be proper Masters and not the terrible Terminator 2 effort that we got all those years back. It's a strange thing because it's a video I wish I didn't have to make because no one ever wants to go out and buy terrible looking 4K transfers and as you can see I have quite a few. But videos like this has also saved me a lot of money as well and I know how much they can help.

Hey Kevin. Terminator 2 is horrendous but the rest of the Terminator movies on 4K look quite decent so it didn't feel right to include the franchise in this top 10.

was waiting for lord of the rings in 4k on your list. for me personally thats the worst. after watching it multiply times on the extended blu ray version, the 4k version is just off...cant really explain why. The audio is awesome tho.

I actually haven't seen the Lord of the Rings on 4K as of yet. I have it in my collection but haven't gotten around to it yet. I haven't heard many great things about it if I'm completely honest

I'm surprised you didn't mention Lord of the Rings which has been complained about almost excessively for its DNR use, or the Bourne Identity which most people say looks awful

I never seen the Lord of the Rings on 4k up to that point but I have watched them since and they are nothing near as bad as what people were making them out to be

@@millerman9991 That’s interesting, I thought the DNR was almost as noticeable as on Jurassic Park and Star Wars Episode 1, with the main difference being that the HDR on LOTR is so good that it hides and somewhat makes up for the DNR

No I definitely didn't notice the DNR on the Lord of the Ring movies as much. Don't get me wrong they are far from perfect and there's a lot of room for improvement there as well

Bourne identity is complained about looking the exact same as standard Blu Ray. LOTR has a far better picture than standard Blu Ray. Some shots look a little "too scrubbed". But you're gonna have that with film to video conversions.

The only way to watch Star Wars is on 4K77 and 4K83. The former has a file size of about 90Gb but it's with it!

@@millerman9991 The legality is vague, but it is eye popping. I've seen both the DNR and no-DNR versions. The former is very mild and looks better on a TV as the files are designed to be projected.

Just because some 4K releases are mediocre doesn't mean they're not worth picking up, particularly if you're just getting into the collector space like I am. Even films like Jurassic Park 4K and Star Wars Episode 1 4K that have excessive DNR are still the best they've ever looked on home video due to higher color space, brightness, resolution, and video bitrate, and so if you can get it for a good price it doesn't make sense to skip and get the Bluray instead. Besides, most of the time, when you buy the 4K Bluray, you already get the standard Bluray and digital code with it, so if you end up preferring the Bluray disc, you already have it. And in some cases, that Bluray has been remastered and can have the benefits of a 4K scan.

To be honest I don't think episode one of Star Wars looks better on 4k. Yes you do get the enhancement of color but it's definitely not enough to recommend picking up the 4K release. As for Jurassic Park I think it's far better in 3D and that's my go-to way to watch it. All of these movies deserve better and I guarantee you if a well-known label like for instance arrow Video got their hands on these I guarantee you they will look absolutely pristine. But unfortunately there's no way that will ever happen.

@@millerman9991 I actually don’t care for Jurassic Park in 3D because it’s a post-convert and it shows, because some shots look really good in 3D and other shots really don’t translate as well. I prefer native 3D films in 3D such as Avatar and Avatar 2 which look consistently great on that format.

@Pocketkid2 yeah there's no question about Avatar is probably the gold standard when it comes to 3D but there is some fantastic conversions out there as well. Check out the Avengers for an example. Titanic is another good one

Hence why I hate 4K. All the over processing. If it was just 2160 res upgrade it would be one thing, but because they have adopted all this post processing garbage. Over sharpened, over contrast, over saturated. DNR, etc. It is not natural and for anyone who knows what HDR or Ultra HD is, in photography, it is 3 exposure taken, to take advantage of FULL range. Exposing 1 for dark, 1 for bright, and 1 in the middle and sandwiching together. But this is taken at the time. Not having done that at the time of the exposure/negative, you are only trying to post process manipulate something that does not exist. More manipulation. It is an overused new toy. Oh look what I can do. yea, cool. Overdone. There are people that like this garbage, but make no mistake it is not how the film looked or is supposed to look. It is your personal opinion. Like people commenting on hating film grain. Uh, you are watching a film. Mind boggling.

I definitely wouldn't go as far as to say that I hate it but I'm definitely not going to preach to you either. If you don't like it that's your opinion and I absolutely respect that. But when 4K is done right it can be something truly remarkable and unfortunately there is companies out there that don't support it as much as they should especially when you see some of the transfers on these movies that I mentioned in the top 10. They have all the tools to make a picture look beautiful but somehow how they use them over aggressively or Not Enough. That's why I get excited when you hear about a new movie coming out from the likes of arrow Video or second sight just to name a few because you know they're going to put the work in to it and give you the best possible picture you could ever want. It's a shame the biggest Studios don't have the same attitude. Most of this top 10 is built up of Paramount Disney and Universal. No sign of any Sony titles because Sony put in the work

The only problem is if you remove film grain your removing detail. But I'm not going to preach to you because that's how you enjoy your movies and all the power in the world to you my friend. If you like how these movies look do not let me put you off them. Like I said in this video these are my opinions and everybody has different displays so that means everyone is getting different viewing experiences. i think they were upscaled with AI, thats why the slin looks like plastic, the AI wipes away all the grain in a video, i have a lot of DVDs that i want to tranfer and upscale into an MKV file, so i bought a AI upscale program, boy was i dissapointed with the image, now ill do the conversion and lapsharp with handbrake, soooo much better, once done, i can put all my DVDs on the attic for storage, cheers

It's definitely not AI. It's DNR. It's a processing tool that can be good if it's used correctly but unfortunately it never gets used correctly and what you get in the end is a lot of what you see in this top 10.

I actually own the first two and I honestly can't remember the picture quality but what I will tell you is the Dolby Atmos particularly on the first movie is Borderline deafening. I think you're going to love it
